Hi, I'm very interested in applying and attending St. George for the MD program in Aug 2006. Everything looks awesome for this school, I'm pretty excited. Anyways, I was just wondering if there was any mountain biking on the island. If so, are there any fellow mountain bike riders attending the school right now? Some info on this would be great.

I dont mountain bike, but I have friends who do: since the island is somewhat mountainous, there are a lot of cool places you can go mountain biking...some of it is a bit rougher than the trails you may have ridden back home, but you end up looking over the beautiful caribbean sea or a waterfall or some such, and so they assure me that the trails are amazing...but i've never been on them myself...

It's amazing how many graduates I speak to who beg me to send them back to Grenada so they can take advantage of all the things they missed or didn't have time to do while going to school. I definitely try to encourage all the students to try to get out and explore all the beauty of the Island when they have the free time. It can be a nice relaxing break from all of your studying and get your mind focused again.

Scuba diving + mountain biking= great break from the rigors of med school. This school keeps sounding better.
If any wants to post any pictures, or knows where some can be found, that would be appreciated.

I thought of the same thing when i was packing for school but then i found out there is a huge tax on the value of your bike something like 25% since my bike was $1,000 that was way too much than what i wanted to pay.. Also you won't have time to mtb and your bike might get damaged/or lost during transport. i have only seen one mountain bike here on the roof of someone's car but I haven't heard or seen of anyone actually riding here. also all the trails are like a 30min car ride away and i haven't seen any bike racks, the locals ride bikes here and they are worse than Huffy's. If also since there are no nice bikes here if you do bring your cannondale here they will tax the hell out of you...

if you want to risk damaging your bike and paying a few hundered dollars to bring it here and then trying to find a safe spot to store the bike on the island be my guest but i would strongly advise against it. sorry to burst your bubbles. also if u were to rent a car here its $500 a month and gas is $3 a gallon, the only way to get to the real trails is by car. plus you would waste the whole day to go riding, and you will find that you probably ride the bike maybe 2 times at most the whole time your here, so bringing your bike here would be a waste.....

ok...so, my wife stacy is going to be attending st. georges and i am an avid mtn biker so, not only will i have time, but i won't mind wasting the day actually "riding my bike" to the bike trials.

my concern lies with the having a good bike to ride. i'd have to agree with RussianJoo that transporting your bike here is questionable...not only do you have the risk of damaging your bike, but having it stolen. so, question is, do they have any "good" bike shops on the island, or am i going to have to buy a huffy style fill in to ride for 2 years? which btw, i would do in a second to ride the hills in grenada.

Make sure to buy 2 Huffys. 1 to ride and 1 for spare parts!

So, what your saying is that I shouldn't bring my 4,000$ Santa Cruz? How does customs know what it costs? What if I "bought it used for 500$". Or cover it in duct tape to get it through customs. Are you also saying that it isn't safe to store a bike like this in dorms or apartments? Are there home break ins? How long does it take to drive to the mountains, it's a small island for crying out loud. You sound very negative russian joo, are you a hiker who just doesn't like mountain bikers? Sorry about the barrage of questions, but if I can't ride my bike I'll go nuts. I would just like to know if mountain biking is possible on the island. Thanks.

no i am not a hiker.. I used to mountain bike a lot actually before i cracked my knee open... you can trick the costums people fine. but like i said they haven't seen any bikes with shocks or anything like that, so if they see it they will asume its expansive, u can make a fake recipt though... there are no break-ins but when you leave for summer and winter breaks your bike might get stolen from school storage, i have heard of people missing clothes and other things from that place, the school is not responsible for your stuff. also even though the island is small it still take about 20-30min to get into town from grand anse and thats only like 5miles away... idk how long it will take to get to the mountains, but i am asuming no less then 30min. also the biggie is getting your bike here, if you ship it via UPS it will coast a fortune if you ship it anyother way it will take forever to get to you or will not get here at all, my roommates dad sent two packeages to him 3months ago they still haven't gotten here. if you take it on the plane with you it might get crushed by other luggage and get thrown around by the airport workers, might all so get lost in the airport, also it will def coast you more to take it with you on the plane...

if you want to pay all those extra fees then by all means bring your bike, I am sure there are some awsome trails here.. I didn't want to risk damaging my bike or paying the extra fees so i didn't bring it.

its a free country you can do whatever you want...
