I hated that section of time. I waited about 3 weeks. I drank a lot. lol j/k
I thought I would finally stop grinding my teeth once my interview was over and all responsibilites were off me. Nope, I continued to stress. And I'm not used to stressing, so it wasn't pretty.
Now, I get to stress about money.
This is great. When does the stressing stop?

I've been waiting for a few weeks as well...they told me it could take up to 8 weeks....which seems like forever. My interview was in April, so it's been about 5 already. I interviewed May 6th and called last week to check on my app. Originally they told me it would be another couple weeks until they had a decision, but I got a call the 2 days later on Wednesday that I was accepted. So, you might want to give Bayshore a call since they may have just returned a batch of decisions. I still haven't gotten anything in the mail though.
Mohitemup, you're MCAT is much better than mine (I had a 28) and our GPA's are similar, I had a 3.25, so hopefully you'll get the same news I did!

its tough, but hang in there. to make things a little better, the waiting time for US med schools is usually way longer than the waiting for SGU. so SGU is already pretty good and fast in response time compared to US schools

I know how you feel. My interview was on May 16. I called Bayshore today and still my file is with the committee. The person on the phone seemed inpatience with me now that I called every week. She said she would call me as soon as she knew and if she couldn't reach me she would e-mail me. She said my file was with the Committee since may 18th.
I am kind of nervous now. I wonder why other people got response within a week or so. Why they take too long to review for us? Is that something to do with whether we would be considered for admission or not? Is that good or bad that we have to wait longer than other? :?: :?::?: Too much is going on in my head. Can't sleep well.
I am trying to focus on something else, but it is HARD not to think of SGU.

look, you guys should calm down. i know it's tough as heck waiting for an answer from sgu when it's one of your last possibilities, and every other school has said no....but i know for a fact that people with very good numbers had to wait a long time, and other people with mediocre numbers didnt have to wait at all. people often say that if you have amaaaaaaaaazing stats they will get you in quick, and i dont know anything about that, but i do know of a good number of people who had great numbers who had to wait months. so dont worry, it'll work out, in the meantime, spend some time with family, friends, go out to your favorite restaurant or bar a few extra times, do all the things you really want to do but never got a chance to. it'll take your mind off of waiting and you'll accomplish some minor goals. go skydiving! go on a roadtrip! enjoy your time in the states/canada/wherever for a bit. im not saying i dont like it down here, i do, but after a while you miss it!
hang in there, everything has a way of working out in the end....

You know what. Check your mail. I got the letter for interview after 2 weeks of checking e-mail and waiting for a call then there came a letter from SGU to call the interviewer. So I think you will get a response soon. I know how you feel.
Here are some tips for you.
The interview questions are pretty much the same for every one. They use 2 parts of interview questions. One for the stuffs in your application and the other to ask you questions (like interview question, why? How? stuffs). Oh they usually ask abortion and euthanasia (How do you feel about them?)
Don't forget to prepare for the essay. I think it is same thing, 3 choices: who influence you most on your decision to become a physician; a life changing event and i for get the other one. Can't think right now... Please fill me up if anyone know the third one or any other questions besides this three.

Thanks for the binder tip. I have a question about food. I usually eat rice (I am asian). Do they have rice there or do I have to bring my own rice? (that's suck).
Another question about the flight, I am planning to take JetBlue from LAX to SJU and from SJU I will take Liat to GND (3 stops). The question is whether I have to transfer my bags to another plane when I get off JetBlue. And also jaywalker said something about only 70lb on Liat, so I have to pay my other 70lb bag as extra lb? I may have to call the airline to get the answer but i also want to know from you guys. I never been out of US since I got here so it is new for me with all the custom and stuff.

for the rice question, yes they have rice here, but it is NOT the asian type of rice. you know how those asian rice tends to "stick" and "clump" up after cooking? well the rice here dont do that. its more like a spansh type of rice. if you are used to it then you will be fine. me on the other hand prefers the traditional asian type of rice, so i brought down like a 5 lbs of rice and then bought the grenadian rice. and what i do is just mix the two together, this way my precious asian rice will last longer.
as far as the luggage, yep you do have to pick up ur luggage after jetblue flight at SJU and re-check them in to the next flight whatever that may be.
and if you are lucky, LIAT will make u pay for the xtra lugagge/weight. that depends if they have room, if they dont, then you still have to pay for the xtra luggage, but it will just be on the next flight out to GND, and then you will have to pick it up at the airport when it gets teher...whenever that will be...

Wow it is harder than I thought, I probably have to bring a rice cooker too along with my precious rice. (MY PRECIOUS) We usually mix with the indian rice basmarti with asian rice at home. It is better to bring things with me than ship things there? Do they take custom for every thing we bring there or send there?
I think I might have to pack a light luggage, but how? It is killing me to find a ticket and trying to make enough time to make connection. Now I have to worry about luggage.
Thank you for the rice info. I needed it.

06-12-2005, 03:03 PM
they will take custom for any electronic. as for food, if you bring in a hoard of food and they think you will be re-selling them in grenada, they will charge you.
it is cheaper to just bring the stuff u need in luggage instead if shipping it here. that is assuming that ur luggage is coming with you on the same plane.
shipping stuff here is crazy expensive. if you want relaible servce, its fedex. last time my mom sent me just 15 lbs of stuff and it cost about $150 US via fedex, and it wasnt the 2-3 days or the next day service it was the 7-10 day one i think. the point is..if you can, just bring it all with you. saves u money and time.

malikha, a few things:
1. Most of my friends who are coming from LAX go to JFK and then jump on the AJ direct, 140 lbs. luggage, no worries about it getting lost and whatnot.....although it may be cheaper the way you are doing it, the first time you come down you might have a lot of stuff with you, i.e. clothes, pots and pans, food, etc. The next two or three trips you make down here you are going to leave your clothes, you will have all your school supplies and pots and such, so all you'll need is to recharge your food stash. I would suggest taking an AJ flight so you can bring a whole bunch of stuff with you. then on later flights you can save money and take the other route with the less weight allowance...
When I came down the first time, I brought three bags, the extra one cost me $75, and although one of the other bags was overweight and they tried to charge me like $150 for an extra 5 lbs., i managed to talk them into just charging me for the extra bag and not for the overweight one. 75$ is less than what you will pay to ship 70lbs. down here, regardless of which carrier you use, AND, for the most part, the bag will come with you, no waiting weeks or months.
2. My parents sent me a care package with stuff in it and they used amerijet, and it took 3 days from the day my dad sent it, and it cost him 1/5 of what fedex was asking, so i think it depends on where you are, but my dad found out that amerijet sends shipments out of jfk on saturday at noon. So, he went there at 10am, dropped off my box, I got it on Tuesday. They charged me some money in customs, but I was really nice to the customs agent, made a few jokes, etc, and he charged me only 50EC(20 US) for a whole box of food and clothes and random stuff, so I dont think it's too bad. Maybe I just got lucky, I dont know.
Oh, and electronics are terribly overcharged...one way of getting around it is totry to hide any electronics(ipods, cameras, whatever) in your pockets or whatever, not that I suggest breaking the law in any way, but i have heard this has been done...
jaywalk81
06-12-2005, 04:35 PM
just make sure u have a receipt for all electronics. that way the custom official would not just charge you a random price he /she thought of on the spot.

Thanks, I might as well take the direct flight from JFk. I don't really think it is a good thing for me to get to SJU ar 1:30 am and wait until 1:30pm for my next island hopping flight. And I think I can only get like 50lbs for jetblue.
The round trip ticket is a must, is that true? My package from the admin office hasn't arrived yet. The ticket alone is going to cost me $1500. but I can always try the free trip thing, right? Just a hope.
Please give out suggestions for what to bring to the island. What if I can't find the receipt for my camera, I have to pay whatever they charge? It is kind of like Burmese coustom, I think.
Thanks, daguru & jaywalker for all the tips and suggesstion.

The roundtrip ticket thing is a must, it's a rule from grenada, as far as I know. I thought I remember reading that in some packet somewhere, but there might be some way around it.
also, try contacting the university's travel agent....there will be info on her in the packets, and also there is an american airlines star number or something, that supposedly is pretty good too for getting you discounts on AA flights, but I dont know, i always take AJ.
as for the electronics, people i know kept cameras and stuff in their pockets and didnt have to pay for them, but if it's too big or you dont want to take the risk, you should bring the receipt. if you dont have the receipt, then you could try printing up your own receipt, make it look somewhat official, and say you bought it used or something...when you arrive and get to customs it's like a whoooole bunch of people all waiting online...my experience so far has been that they dont trouble you all that much, just get what they can get out of you quickly, and then move on to the next....so they might not argue too much over a home-made receipt, if it looks good enough...
as for answering all your questions, no problem! i used this thing a bunch before i came down, and a lot of people helped me out, so im just passing on the favor...and besides, i REALLY dont want to study for this exam tomorrow.... :) keep posting if you have any other questions!

hahahaha daguru....procrastination...wait i think i am doing the same thing too.
as far as jetblue...uyou can have 140 Lbs of checked in and 50 Lbs of carry on. jetblue is awesome..they pride themselves on customer service so if you have any trouble just call them up and explain ur problem.
and i think EMT has said that the new policy is now grenada dont required roundtrip tickets anymore...but i would def. call bayshore to comfirm that!
and always be courteous to the custom ppl. u yell or argue...you will be whooping out money like its water...

06-12-2005, 06:18 PM
Grenada Immigration actually just changed the requirement this term: You no longer need a round-trip ticket for entry/visa in Grenada. I have a letter from them around here somewhere, and I will try and dig it up...
You should contact Bayshore re: the free ticket offer... I think there is probably some sort of "lowest priced" language in there, a $1500 seems a bit expensive.

with the checked bags remember to find out what the limit is for your leg of the flight to GND is and no SJU I just checked jet blue they allow 3 bags up to 70lbs each but AA allows only 2 bags up to 70 lbs. So your limiting factor (or reagent for chem buffs) is the AA flight. So check your airline for the rules because if not you'll pay
jaywalk81
06-12-2005, 07:13 PM
note! the AA flight from SJU to GND is not the big AA plane. it is American eagle flight...meaning that the TOTAL of checked bags is 70 Lbs. not each.
the american eagle plane is much smaller and is a propeller plane..
Malikha
06-12-2005, 07:28 PM
I just check the baggage limit on LIAT because those are the one running between SJU and GND and if I take jetblue to SJU I have to take LIAT. With the baggage limit in LIAT I don't think I will take it.
Here is what they say in Liat web page.
"With effect from November 15th, 2004 the free baggage allowance applicable to each adult or child passenger traveling on all LIAT services will be fifty pounds (50 lbs.) or twenty three kilos (23 kgs.). This allowance includes the weight of cabin baggage (unchecked baggage). Additional personal items will be carried free of charge. "
Only 50lbs for the whole trip is unfair.
Question to you in Grenada. What do you use for phone? Cell phone or install a phone? If you happen to use cell phone, do you buy a phone here and activate it or do you just buy one there?
Another question, what is the most useful thing that you brought there and you would recommend it to any one? :)

cell phone..run a search and you find many threads on this. but quick answer is most students here use cell phone. you can either bring one or buy one here. if you gonna bring one, it needs to have a GSM network. cingular has services here in GND.
the most useful thing? my computer. it is ur learning tool, communication tool and also the most important entertainment tool!

Well, LIAT is running Havilland Dash 8's, which may or may not be up to FAA specs. (Remember that AirJamaica thing?) Anyways, a baggage restriction is better than crashing into the ocean because the plane can't get off the ground. :-)
