Students so often do not realize the power they have over the continuing exploitation received here by the Dominicans. A student who dined at PBH restaurant for over a year and noticed his usual breakfast had doubled in price was told this by the owner, " Well, I'm trying to discourage students from coming here for now.......I just want to cater to the movie people." Now people come on!! This typical lazy, disrespectful, ignorant and greedy Dominican represents the problem on this island. These Dominicans do not give a damn about students. They constantly bite the hand that feeds them. PBH restaurant would not even exist without Ross students. When the movie is finished, the restaurant will have to rely on Ross students to continue any business. PLEASE teach this person a lesson and do not go there. Don't you see that you can control so many aspects of the living situation here? If we don't buy......they have to change their ways to accomodate us. If we continue to let them treat us like trash..nothing will ever change. I am urging all of you to ban this establishment. We can all survive just fine without PBH restaurant. Show this person who's the boss!

yeah i think the dizney people should comp us here in st. vincents. they really made things bad for us here. couldnt go to some resorts on our days off. food went up in price. rents went up because dizney would pay anything. landlords catered to the hollywood folk and expected us to pay the same ridiculous rents.
i support your protest
dont watch the movie. the first one sucked anyway

I agree, show them that they cannot bite the hand that feeds them.
I didn't know anybody who ever went to the PBH restaurant anyways...

I finished two semesters already and I just read about PBH restaurant. NO worries, I am sure there are hundreds of students like me who don't even know about something called PBH restaurant.

I remember going to the PBH restarant in August 2003 with my son. We just arrived in Dominica and needed some food. We didn't know the area so we saw other students eating there so we ate. The menue was ridculusly overpriced and I paid over $10 US for a chicken sandwhich, french fries and a coke. But for free I got $10 worht of mosquito bites. In the morning before the housing tour we went to have some breakfast. Unfortunately the eggs had't arrived yet so we had some overpriced cerial and tasteless coffee.
I stayed at the cottages for a week but never dared to eat at the restaurant again. We ate at the various Chinese restarants for dinner and for breakfast and lunch we at at the Ross Cafeteria, which unfortunately was closed the following semester and never reopened. Never got a good answer as to why they didn't enlarge it. The food was excellent.

haha. PBH restaurant? gimme a break.
I'd boycott them even if they weren't catering to disney.
I'll tell you this though. I will watch Pirates of the Carib 2..... after I download it off the internet.
the prices at PBH are unbelievable even the Pirates don't eat there. The gold gooose has been killed once again in Dominica.
Most of the people go to The Tomato for food, at least it's good value for your money. The couple who own it care about students and try to bring a North American touch to the Rock. I had the cheesecake it's better than the Cheesecake Factory.
Students need to make a stand, and stop putting up with crap. There's power in numbers!!!!!

I am tired of so many of you disrespecting Dominicans. Excuse them for trying to make hay while the sun shines. Given their position who would not try to make a buck while the movie folks are here. Labeling them as greedy and unpleasant is so completely opposite to all my experience here and is indicitave of the selfish and ignorant attitude that many students show to both locals as well as their peers and faculty members.

I'm sure your experience here is limited concerning interaction with Dominicans. I have been here for over a year and have never seen such a misquided country. Exploiting the movie folk? Well, mabye. But you completely missed the whole point. They exploit the students!! Ross University supplies 60% of the GDP of Dominica. How do you feel they can charge students three times the rent they would charge a Dominican? Why do Dominicans have no concern regarding customer service? Why do people of a third world stress themselves over having a flip phone? Why do students consistently get screwed out of their deposits? They want payment up front..immediately yet they want two months to give back deposits! I am well aware there are very many snotty and spoiled students who don't treat the locals very well. I am not one of them. I do not have a/c, I live in Portsmouth..and have integrated myself deep within the culture here.....and the above conclusions have been made. I have made a consideral effort to understand the people of this country. I have only found a handful of Dominicans that have any ethics or compassion. Do you honestly feel the library staff is courteous and helpful? Do you think the IT department is competent? You are probably one of those students who says hi to the occassional grounds keeper and feel like you are culturally adapted! Give me a break! I've done the research. Dominicans want cell phones and sports cars.....roads, water system, garbage control, child care....who cares.....Just give 'em a motorola flip and they're happy! You're silly.

Akcorn, you are correct that students should not disrespect Dominicans for trying to make a living (or for any other reason). However, that doesn't mean that students can't choose where to eat/shop/live based on who treats them well. For some business in Dominica you don't have a choice - you have to go there. Cable and Wireless used to be the biggest circus. You'd wait there up to an hour even if there was no line. Then you basically had to sacrifice vital organs before they would correct an erroneous bill. A more applicable example, however, is the two local grocery stores - one is larger and close and another one is a bit further away but SHE treats students with respect and appreciates their business. No matter what country we are in, we should always try to give our business to the people who are honest, helpful, and appreciate our business.
I still say - I never knew anybody who ate at the PBH restaurant - Le Flambou or whatever it was called.

I havent met ANYONE who likes Dominica. There are small portions of dominica that we all did like, but nobody has said that they liked a majority of the people in dominica. everyone has been cheated in one way or another down there. nobody likes when they are cheated, no matter where they come from. the domincans can say they are poor, etc, but I've seen numerous dominicans driving luxury vehicles and have money to spare for enormous rims, etc that most people in the US dont even have. there are poor and rich people everywhere. just becuase students come from the US doesnt mean they are rich. students are coming from their lifestyle back in the US/Canada to dominica, and are still living within the same mindest. no poor student comes to dominica and becomes rich, the same way no rich student comes down and is even richer. open your eyes folks, there ARE rich-folk in Dominica just like anywhere else. if the restaurant is charging way too much, dont eat there. nobody should pay more for foods/services just becuase the person providing them is a poor third-world dweller. If you really felt bad for that person on your own account, then YOU (and only you) should be the one who can donate funds to this person at your discretion. quit giving others a bad name becuase they disagree with you.
