for example, if a class average is 50%, does it get normalized?

we have a 70% rule, if 70% of the class misses the question on a test then the question gets dropped.... Also there are some built in curves (i.e. neuro) and there is a promotion comittee.

WHAT HAPPENS to the 30 percent that answer it correctly?
they lose credit it for it??
they get penalized for getting it correct??
makes no sense

No, they dont get penalized. They count it as extra credit for that exam. So it can be possible to get over 100% on some exams, I personally know of some highly intelligent people who have done that on a number of occasions.
Kinda pushes you to be competitive and study hard.

if 70% of the class misses a question then its a poorly written question and the people who got it right probably guessed so even if they counted it as wrong it wouldn't be wrong.....its good to have a policy though...at AUC it was up to the instructors some used it was xtra credit but most just threw it out.....

so for instance, if i got a 65% on an exam, does that mean i automatically fail even if the class average on the exam is low?

I think in this case you would fail if a curve didnt exist

You should be aware that there is no curve if the 4th and 5th semester is done in Maine. Its a straight up and down score.

If I only for 65% of my questions correct in anatomy or pharmacology, etc. or if I only got 65% of the operation correct, I would explain to the patient's family that everything was "graded on a curve but I did pass med school."I am only 65% doctor and 35% idiot! What kind of question is this?

You are a rascally one but very funny indeed.
Just study hard and try to not get the 65%. Aim higher friend like 80-90% who cares about the curve.

FYI the new magic number is now 80% ie 80% of the class must miss the question for it to be thrown out. Just put in place this semester. Many professors tend to tell you exactly what will be on the exam- whether they tell you outright or repeat a certain point a number of times (by number of times I mean blatantly obvious that hey are doing so). Either way I wouldn't worry about the curve.
