View Full Version : Canadian With Questions

Just a couple of questions I wonder if someone can help me with.
1. Right now I work as a pilot with the Canadian Forces, and I plan on applying to SABA following my tour in a few years. As this is a full-time position, I have had to complete my undergrad degree (BSc Human Sciences) via correspondence, distance ed, and web-based courses, and will be doing so with my Masters as well. I've been told this would make me a weak candidate as I was not enrolled in full-time studies for the duration of my education, and it took somewhat longer to complete the program. However, during that time I also completed the CF pilot training programs, and worked as an officer with the forces (plus numerous volunteer positions). What's your opinion?
2. I want to return to Canada for a Family Medicine residency. Is it difficult to do this? Have there been many Canadians to return here? I know of some, but is it rare and difficult for this to happen?
Thanks for your time...there'll be more questions to follow I'm sure.

coming back to canada to do family practice is getting easier and easier to do. you should not have any problems as there is a huge push to recruit foreign grads at this point because our production of doctors is not enough.
with regards to correspondence classes, i dont know how its evaluated. its always best to phone the office. have you considered other schools too?

also, check with area hq with regards to scholarship opportunities for professional schools. i believe you can use those scholarships for foreign schools as well. DND has many incentives if you are interested in spending some more time in the forces.

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking into further sponsorship from DND but not extensively - I still have a few more years in my stint as a pilot. Thanks for the vote of confidence RE returning to Canada though. Makes me feel better about attending a foreign med school. Newfoundland is where I'd try and return...and yes, the demand on family practioners in the Rock is very high. I have been looking into Canadian and Caribbean schools. I like the idea of completing the MD in less time at SABA - I'll be 33 by the time I am finished with the flying and would like to get into this new career soonest, although I love school...! Does SABA base entrance on age at all? Maybe I'll just give them a shout.
Salutations CF_Pilot:
SABA does NOT base admission on age. As long as you truly want to become a physician and have the motivation and drive to do so, I believe you will be given the opportunity by SABA. Good luck in your future endeavors and hope all goes well for you. Ciao. :D

Let me assure you that Saba does not discriminate based on age. I've got you beat by well over a decade.
On a side note. One of my classmates was a pilot on the Canadian Forces as well. I wish I could get you two together. PM me your e-mail and I'll try.
Best of Luck!

Since you are already in the DND and an officer you have many doors open to you......
Before heading down to saba I enquired at my local recruiting office about become a doc in the forces. I also spoke to an officer doing her med training at McMaster and she told me that DND has a few spots reserved at CDN schools for already enlisted individuals who want to become service docs (term of service variable 5-10 years). I am not sure who exactly to speak to but you can always phone up a recruitment office as a last resort….. the staff there should be able to point you in the right direction.
PM me for my email if you have any other q’s.
Lobotomy Man.
3rd sem….. and many more to go.

I concur......Easy to become a doctor if you are already in air force, army or navy........they have reserved spots.......you have to check with the university you are interested in....to find out the requirements.....
Good Luck,
