If a student was able to get a core rotation at a non SMU affiliated, yet ACGME affiliated hospital is it possible for us to rotate there? A random example, say we have a connection at a top hospital like NYU, Mount Sinai, North Shore, Columbia etc which allows us to rotate IM, Peds or some other core at the hospital would the school allow us to do this? Since I know the school assigns us our rotations I was wondering if this would be factored in for us and if it can effect our placements in other rotations?

ThanK you,

All of your cores have to be done at hospitals with signed affiliation agreements. That being said, if you feel you have a strong lead on a clinical site, feel free to discuss it with the Clinical Development Team. It may end up with SMU having a site that can be not only by you but by students after you.

Do all rotations in teaching hospitals & school affiliated hospital. The state of Illinois actually asks for a copy of the affiliation agreement between the school and the teaching hospital, other states probably will also ask.
DO the norm,do not deviate from the norm, also I notice when I applied to MI that some consider teaching if a hospital has FP residency program only but MI and other states wanted rotations with residency in the AREA of rotation, the more you stick with the requirements the less headache your will encounter.
personal encounters.

I figure there are alot of places to do cores in NY, so I'm not at all worried. I just wanted to have all the facts straight :)
