A friend of mine and I were speaking about the continued collaboration between SMU and Harvard. Obviously it is an excellent opportunity for SMU students but we wondered from where it came from.

Professors, doctors and research individuals from Harvard University at one time or another came to SMU last semester to teach.

Does anyone know why the collaboration? and from where is the connection made?

I think Maine Medical is affiliated with Harvard Medical

For those of you who are not aware, Maine medical is the top hospital in Maine and is closely associated with the SMU school administration and school at the Wyndham, Maine campus. Doctors from here regularly give lectures to 4th and 5th semester students.

Either way it is a blessing to have all these wonderful minds assist us in our pursuit of an M.D degree. I even heard a few will be going to cayman this upcomming semester.

Best of luck this semester....Erica

I think a member of the board of trustees of SMU is the director of Harvard international.

Therefore giving SMU a strong link to Harvard university.

Also, one of the members of the SMU board of trustees either implemented or helped shape and design the new pathway program at Harvard university.

The new pathway program is the foundation of the basic science education at Harvard medical school. It is a case study curriculum which reenforces the process of classroom basic science instruction by exposing students early in their education to the application of concepts and principles of medical science. This is essentially one of the big reasons why I chose SMU, the people behind the scenes.

Anyway, SMU definitely has all the right people taking part in shaping it into a great medical school.

i dont want to burst any bubbles, but I have to say in all honest, please be careful about assuming that this link is going to be terribly opportunistic for smu students. Other schools have yale affiliations and harvard folks have been associated with other off shore schools in other ways. But - while I'm happy to be wrong here- I think you have to be careful that you don't start assuming a more practical benefit to the smu students than there is or will be. Again, I am perfectly happy to be wrong; but Ive seen off shore schools establish relationships before and students either get themselves worked up about it only to be disappointed, or worse, they try to manipulate the facts of the relationship to misrepresent themselves. In any event, any good clinicals will be a boon.

I thought the advantage was more in the context of leadership. Even if only for the sole purpose of having the privelage of great professors come and teach class.

Let me outline our relationship with the Harvard Macy Institute.

http://www.harvardmacy.org/default.asp

Our Executive Dean has been involved with Harvard Macy and Harvard Medical International for years. One of the members of our Board of Trustees is the Director for Education Programs, Harvard Medical International, Director of the Harvard-Macy Institute, Harvard Medical International, and Associate Professor in Pediatrics (Medical Education) at Harvard Medical School. You can learn more about her at http://www.stmatthews.edu/boardarmstrong.html

Since they have joined us, we have been allied with the Harvard Macy Institute. We are hosting a program with them later this year
http://www.harvardmacy.org/programs.asp?DocumentID=31

How does any of this affect you as students? Well, your curriculum that you are currently utilizing was developed mostly by the two individuals above, along with many of the other changes that you have seen recently. The most encouraging results of this are of course the jump in USMLE pass rates.

Also, in case you did not see it, we are jointly developing a research center on Brac

http://www.caymannetnews.com/2005/02/779/eye.shtml

which will of course allow more research opportunities for students. There will be continuing visiting lectures.

There are no mentions of clincal placements arising from this affiliation that I am aware of.

I hope that answers the OP's question.

Thank you for the clarification JP. I almost assumed "a more practical benefit for smu students" here. Curriculum and research? No biggie.

This definitely sounds like a "practical benefit"mincing terms. Greg brady wanted to live by "exact words" and look where it got him.
