hey
orientation is basically when you get greated by some of the faculty members and get to mingle with your fellow classmates...they will also take all your paper work for the temporary residence and give you info about the island and whats availale to you as resources and stuff...its pretty informative and short...unless they have changed things around this year...but it was brief....:)

And during this orientation you don't have to see me come in half-awake and talking about the Christian Student Organization....

....but you might have to see that on someone else! ;-)

You don't have to go if you don't want to.

I would highly suggest going to the orientation. Personally, I felt that the information presented was very helpful. It is also a very good chance to meet your instructors and classmates!!
Good luck, have fun!

I am dating myself because this is when Dr. ******** and Dr. Chambers were on the island. Dr. ******** said in his Scottich voice several things that stuck in my mind. The first is when he called Dr. Chambers the Lord High Executioner. The second part which was most prophetic and I think treally still applies is as follows:

"You put your *** in the chair and your nose in the books, and you don't get up until what is in the book is between your ears."

You have to remember that you are on Saba for one reason and that is to get your medical degree. Many were unable to get into a US school and that is why you sought out a Caribbean education. From this point on, you are going to have to open the doors. You have to distinguish yourself from others. Hard work does pay off.

As for me, I got into the residency of my choice in a specialty that is nortoriously hard for IMGs. I was rewarded by being a chief resident during my last year of residency. I am doing a fellowship in an up-and-coming specialty with probably the most well known person in the field right now. I have served as a faculty member at a US medical school and have lined up a job for the coming year at another academic institution in the geographic area I most wanted to be. I presently am licensed in 3 states (one of which is apparently difficult for some IMGs) and I have licenses for 2 additional states in the final process right now.

So, basically what I am trying to say, is that if you work hard, you can succeed. Nobody is going to say, "You went to X school therefore you must be good". Remember, you are not good based on what school you attend, you are good based on the type of person you are. Saba simply serves as the portal to allow you to acheive greatness.

I'm in first, and I'm going to orientation. Other students have invited some of us to go island hopping this weekend, and skip orientation, too. However, as kind as the offer was intended I think it would be best for me to remain on the island, continue to get acclimated to the island and start working as hard as possible from day one. Taking a short cut right away doesn't seem wise for me right now. Maybe later, when I know more I'll know what I can skip and what I can't, but everyone is different and it's better to do what is expected of you right at the start. In short:

Go to orientation!

p.s. -- thanks for the encouragement, as always, DSMMD

hola!...I would also recommend going to orientation. You need to do some paper work like: student ID and residency papers. It's not a big chunk of your day and the rumor is that there is free pizza. There will be mucho time to go island hopping.

cheers,
