Somewhere I read on one of the postings that the welcoming committee will tell new students about a way to get unlimited phone calls to the U.S. for $35 per month. Can anyone who has heard of this or uses this please explain it to me and other concernd students?

Thanks!

That sounds pretty good! Which company is offering this deal? Anyone on the Welcoming Committee (Mitch?) shed some light?

Well, I'm not sure where you read that, but I've been on the Welcoming Committee for a few semesters now and have never heard of such a thing. However, somebody could have been talking about the Internet Phone. I get 350 minutes per month for $7.50 with dialpad.

Hope that helps!

Since I am responsible for the Welcoming Committee and have read all the info that Dr. Vogel compiled when he was responsible before me, I think I am safe in saying that the Welcoming Committee has never had any "official" inofrmation regarding such a calling plan. Perhaps someone had some unofficial information but I have never heard about it if they did.

Possibly it was the internet. Any info on how one goes about getting the service?

There are a few companies out there I use dialpad. Go to dialpad.com. You will have a problem if you do it here b/c your credit card address will not match where the computer is calling from so it is best to sign up before you come..you will need to have your own computer here to use this b/c you cannot do it from the school's. You can either do as I said and sign up before you come, or have your parents do it for you on their credit card from home...one way or another the billing address on the credit card has to be were the computer is calling in from.

Then you should bring a headset..radioshack has them for a decent price. Sometimes it sounds like you are talking on the phone..other times their is a delay or echo, but pretty good usually...I pay 10 u.s. a month for 500 mins..better than 1 u.s. per min if i use the phone.

If you sign up here in the States then how are you able to use it from the island since you mentioned that the credit card address has to be from where the computer is calling in from..

Thanks for the advice..

Hey Guys for all of you who were wondering about the $35.00 US UNLIMITTED plan..yes I got a reply with that info a few days ago that's probably where you read it and YES IT IS INTERNET TELEPHONY..

good Luck..J

b/c when you sign up in the states you will be signing up from your home address which is where your credit card it billed too. That is unless you plan on making ross your address with credit card companies, but I did not do this..I probably would not suggest this since the mail can take 3-4 weeks to arrive here (by then you will be paying late fees) and sometimes doesn't arrive for over a month..I got a sports illustrated from october in february! Also, I am still waiting for a birthday card to arrive that was sent..my birthday was in november!

It doesn't matter where you call from or where you sign up. I signed up while I was here with my US address and have had no problems.

i did the same as mitchdc and it was good for a while then all of a sudden it was cancelled b/c of inconsistant billing address and computer address...company stated what I posted..like i said i got away with it for a while also...some may get away with it longer than others, but if you want to depend on the service as I do I say it is better to be safe then sorry
