hey all,
i was just wondering if you guys have flight plans yet.
i think that the website says that orientation starts aug 28 so i was thinking of going down a day or two beforehand, but really have no idea whats going on.
i applied for on campus housing (dont want to have to deal with finding a place on top of everything else right away) but it seems like the may '05 class didnt get their room info and stuff until the week of...
so, yeah, i was just curious to see what you guys were planning on.
see y'all in 117 days!

I'm actually on the phone with AA right now. I'm trying to find out how much it costs to change flights since I will be staying the whole time and you have to have a return ticket. I'll be coming down on the 3rd of August to scout out a place to live. I'm just not a dorms kind of guy. I like my space, but would be willing to have a roommate.

I have checked out many options...so far the best is a combination of US Air and AA...cost is 1400 dollars!! But I am flying from Canada. Anyone at AUC that has any suggestions, please let me know. What airlines fly from Puerto Rico to SXM? Also, does anyone have info on when you can move into the campus residence for the August start??

I think the later you wait to book your flight, the more expensive it is (not that mush though -- like 30-50 dollars). I have my flight booked from new orleans to sxm, about $800/adult and my son's ticket was about $630. -- If some of you are lacking in a plpace to stay -- maybe search this forum for good places to live -- call the place and see if they have vacancies, and the minimum month lease you can do -- better to have a temp. place secured than no place at all.

The dorms are fairly nice. They're really small apartments, each with its own bathroom, kitchen and living room. Actually, they're fairly sizable apartments. The walls are thin, so be very very wary.

im a U of Kansas grad im a 1st semester now, glad to see so another true midwestern coming down... the dorms are decent, if you get a double and tough out a roomie you get a nice view of the lagoon, but if you get a single you get a spectacular view of the parking lot... but from what i understand the dorms are the cheapest place to stay on the island... you get everything for 1000 i believe... other places are a 1000 and then you have to pay utilities on top of that... i cant say that i have looked yet myself, but thats what i gathered from this forum when i was in your position (which feels so long ago, but was like last month... haha)
enjoy your free time, dont freak out the first week come down early if you can, and dont drink everything the upperclass men give you (i found that out yesterday at BLISS... def fun though and now everyone seems to know me as the guy w/ the pink shirt)
everyone here is awesome... you guys will love it and i cant wait to meet most of you

Actually, there are several places you can get for less than $1000; however, many are studios. You can look in Cote d'Azur, Cote d'Azur Marina (we paid $800 for a 1-bedroom), Tradewinds, and Cupecoy Beach Club, to name a few. You definitely need to take utilities into account. We paid, on average, $80-120/month, but it still made rent less than the dorms. Anyway, married couples aren't allowed in the dorms so that was never an option for us.
What's nice about staying in the dorms, at least for first semester, is that you are right on campus and might not need a car. You will also meet a ton of new first semester students before school even starts.
For any of you looking for housing, besides the dorms, you should e-mail the housing office at AUC and they can send you a list of available places.
the futher you move from campus the cheaper it is, a buddy and myself got a house in beacon hill on the water, with our own pool 2br 1bath for 1200 + utillities.
so i pay about 700-800 a month for a great house on the water with my own pool and a great view of the sunset.
Mind you that with living this far off campus you need to own a car, but i owned a car while i lived on campus as well.

But remember, the further you move away from campus, the more you're going to have to deal with traffic. Sure, the islands really small, but boy, can traffic become a real hassle on the island. Bridges go up twice a day, people stop on the road at any time, some stretches of road are really dark, drivers are crazier than crazy New Yorkers.

Hi all,
I'm not a newbie to the forum (have been reading from it for a while), but first time sending out messages. I'm 27 (Jees... time flies) /M/MCAT VR7 ** 13 PS 10/GPA3.82 out of 4.0/ BSc. specialization in Psyc and minor in Biol, Concordia University, Montreal. I will start my first term in Aug. Hope to see everyone of you then. Will there be a party at sunset beach bar for us newbies to meet? For some reason, I have a feeling that we are all contestants of "Survivors" who will soon meet on a deserted island....
Hi cangrad, I've lived in Toronto for a while too, so glad that there will be someone from one of my hometowns. I may go to Toronto in mid July. When will you move to SXM?
Hi druhxk2, with regards to ticket, I have the same predicament (high price). But if you check expedia.ca you can find something as low as 500$ cad (from Montreal though, one way). You may get a similar price if you depart from Calgary. Check it out!
I plan to live off-campus from my first term (so that I can avoid moving again if I choose on-campus housing now). Has anyone received an updated off-campus housing list from the housing office?

05-19-2005, 09:07 AM
Hi Jmed. I am actually driving to the east coast from Calgary in late July, and will be leaving from Fredericton, NB. Travelocity dot ca has round trip for around 1250 to SXM. Best I can find so far, and actually cheaper than a similar flight from Montreal and Toronto, amazingly enough. What do you do in Montreal? Have you checked the price for your flight from an American city close by? Might be a lot cheaper...Burlington maybe? Also, have you checked out Canhelp for funding? How are you going about paying for this tropical endeavour? Talk soon...
Hi druhxk2, I never consider buying a round trip ticket back to Montreal, 'cause I don't plan to come back here in the 20-month basic science period. So I do what most people do: Just buy a one way ticket from where I am, then a ticket from SXM to San Juan for the sake of getting the VISA. And I guess 500 is already as cheap as it can get (driving to a nearby American city may cost at least 100 already). With regards to Canhelp, it seems that it doesn't give us as much $ as Stanford loan or other American loan programs do. It's only 20kUS anually w/o cosigner and 45k w/ cosigner. Try something else, like Royal Bank.

I got everything for $525.00 plus taxes from AA
My sister is comming with me and she got her round trip ticket for $599.00 plus tax. When i saw these prices I reserved it right away.

First of all... its paradise. (aside from the developing country part of it).
I could not imagine a more beautiful place to study.
everyone I met was far nicer and more personable than I am used to.
I was impressed by the labs and the availability of cadavers.
As for the hotel question just above, there is a place by bamboo burnie's and sunset bar (like 5 min away from AUC). That from what I understood from an upperclassmen, has specific roomrates for AUC students around $50/night... a bargain around there. I wish I could remeber the name...

nope. they just need passports. the only reason that we need temp visa's is because we are staying there for 3 months or more. anybody staying for under 3 months does not need a temp visa. talked with them today about visa's so this is not a rumor.

maybe I should have elaborated a little more. You send in everything on that green sheet of paper that they say is necessary for a temp. visa, i.e., 3 passport sized photo's, health forms etc. Once you get on the island (all you need to get on is a passport and your acceptance letter) you go through registration, etc. Once registration is over, the school sends all of the new students documents together to the "government". they get the visa's back to the school anywhere from 2-3 months.

SEMESTER I
Short white student lab coat for the White Coat Ceremony (now available from Note Service on campus)
LAPTOP REQUIREMENT:
It is required to have a laptop with the following recommended specifications: Intel® pentium® M Processor 715 (1.50GHz) w/ 15.0 XGA
Display, Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, SP1, with media, 512MB, Shared, DDR SDRAM, 2 DIMMs, 40GB Hard Drive 9.5MM,
Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps) miniPCI Card, Internal 56K Modem, 8-24-24-24X SWDVD/CDRW Combo Drive,
65W A/C Adapter, Microsoft ™ Office ® 2003, Norton Antivirus® 2004. It is also advised that you have a 256 MB Memory Key or higher.
GROSS ANATOMY:
Plan to dissect the first day of class. You should have the Laboratory Guide and Benchmarks (available at Note Service), dissection kit,
Anatomy Atlas and appropriate attire. Suitable dissection kits are available at Note Service (on campus) at a cost of $32.00. Your kit
should include:
Dissection Kit:
1 No. 4 metal scalpel handle + box of #20 or 21 blades
1 No. 3 or No. 7 metal scalpel handle + box of # 10 blades
1 Blunt-tipped dressing (thumb) forceps
1 Dressing forceps with teeth (2 X 1)
Small iris scissors
Larger (7") scissors blunt/sharp tips
Latex Gloves:
Approximately 6 pairs/week. If you are sensitive to latex, hypoallergenic gloves should be purchased in the U.S. as they are not available in
St. Maarten.
Appropriate Lab Wear:
Students should have at least two lab coats and multiple sets of scrubs, so that a clean set is always available. Some students prefer to
wear a combination of scrubs and lab coat. Sandals are not allowed in the lab, to avoid injury to the feet. Bring a pair of tennis shoes or
rubber soled shoes. Lab coats must be purchased from Note Service on campus. Scrubs are now available from Note Service as well.
Respiratory Problems:
If you are sensitive to chemical vapors, especially formaldehyde or phenol, you may wish to purchase a respirator filter mask (in the U.S.)
Most people do not have a problem, but if you know you are prone to asthma or chemical sensitivity, plan ahead. You may also wish to use
safety glasses. Do not plan on wearing soft contact lenses in the laboratory, they may absorb chemical vapors.
Pregnancy:
Women who know, or suspect, that they are pregnant should discuss this with their obstetrician before taking Medical Gross Anatomy.
Although there is no substantial proof that lab vapors can result in congenital malformations, it is well not to take the risk.

There are a couple of threads about this in the forums already. What seems to be recommended are the imaging atlas, Rohen's color atlas, and BRS Anatomy. I don't think Rohen's atlas and BRS anatomy are in the list from note service, though. I'm not sure what I'm going to get. I want to do well, but I have met me before and don't think the likelihood of me reading optional texts is all that high. I hope this helps.

well, maybe 3 weeks, I did my fasfa months ago, so I only had to send in the financial aid forms to MEAS. But, that is the last that I have heard from them.

Well -- I called for my private loan and was pre-qualified in the same day -- I mailed my financial aid packet off that day too. The hold up was my transcripts getting to th eoffice (they were delayed from undergrad school) -- anyhow, once they rec'd everything - they sent me a letter within, I'd say 7-days, saying that my gov't and private loans had been approved and certified.
Just call them -- they might not be so helpful tomorrow -- I'm sure they are preparing for the hurricane - but you can try.
Just ask them if you're lacking anything, and if not, tell them you didn't get your paperwork yet.

Im in the same situation as you are. Except I was on hold awaiting my final transcripts from my undergraduate college. I recently just called my advisor and she said the transcript has been processed and I should recieve word from the financial aid office in a week or so. I am however going to call the f. aid office tomm. and make sure they have everything they need to process my information. I advise you call them as well and see whats going on with your paperwork.

My credit history was ravaged by one SINGLE late payment by 3 days due to me being in the Caribbean, Sallie Mae did not want to give me a loan without a cosigner. But luckily the creditors were nice to erase that payment and Sallie Mae no longer required me to have a cosigner, but my rate still jumped. Sucked.

Once Xpress approves you for your loan and gets their promissory note, they send the paperwork to the school. I gave them about a week before calling back to confirm the school had certified me. I got a letter in the mail from Xpress a few days later confirming everything.
Xpress allows you to borrow for three semesters, but AUC would only certify two semesters.

C'mon, you ain't a noob anymore, the car and grocery situation has been addressed many times.
There are many ways to buy a car down here. The bus and cab situation, not many people I know use the "bus" system down here though some people use cabs for groceries. But do remember, this is a TOURIST island, meaning lots of CHEAP rental cars you can rent to play with, like go out, shop, eat, etc.

just buy whatever u want. Just as long as it has wi-fi(802.11 b or g, doesn't matter). Don't spend too much on it. (and don't get an HP or a Compaq)
why not an HP

hey guys i was thinking about getting an hp too... mind filling me in on the cons? I know compaqs are horrible (personal experience), but the ones I dealt with were AMD processors. The HPs im looking into are all intel centrion processors. let me know what you guys think. thanks
I love my HP, i just got it ths term. It has the new AMD 64 desktop chip in it, the thing is blazing fast, dual layer burner so i dont have to shirk the dvd i'm copying.

I bought a Toshiba laptop and my experience so far has been satisfying. I feel they give you the more for your buck.
From personal experience and comments from others, I would stick with brands such as Toshiba, Dell, Sony, or Apple for laptops. Those are the ones that last the longest.

Also, remember that St. Maarten now has some sort of Dell service site. So if your dell breaks, u can still get it fixed without having to send it back to the good ol' USA.

I'm thinking about 5 percent of my posts have been about the mac...
5 percent of 3800...is approx 180 posts
Macs are fine. just be sure to search the other mac gurus on campus for tips and help. They sometimes know what they're doing. <== I can't say for sure though. I got through it with a mac for semesters 2-5.
