Hi folks,
I'm trying to figure out how cash to bring with me next week in order to set up my internet and cable for the dorms. Do I have to pay cash or will they accept personal checks or traveler's checks? How far is the nearest ATM from campus?
Thanks!

the closest ATM is about 100 yds away, but i wold avoid using it. All of the WIN bank ATMs are know to not give you money but still duduct out of your account.

About a 15min walk away is a RBBT ATM located in Maho, that is what myslef and most of my friends use.

As for cash to bring, the internet folks at Caribserve take credit cards, otherwise you need a good bit of cash. the equipment new cost ~400 bucks and 120 more if you want to get internet access though an ethernet (cat-5) cable, with out the upgrade your internet comes through a USB port. some times they charge a set up fee(100), but it is ussually waived if you buy the equipment new from them.

You will never get anyone (except AUC) to accept a personal check drawn on a US bank.

I brought 2500 bucks with me and that was plenty, i put most of the big stuff, like internet adn my first trip shopping on the credit card and used the cash i brougt just for spending money. the atm is not hard to get too if you need to get cash in a hurry, just avoid the Winward Island Bank (WIN) ATMs.

IDL internet service also takes credit cards. It's about 50 dollars per month, and you pay 3 months in advance every time you go into their office. When IDL is operational, it's really fast, but that's only if they are operational. They had a lot of problems in the past few months, but right now it seems like everything is working.

As Sakuger said, IDL accepts credit cards.

As for initial set up fees, in total Yoda gave a good estimate for how much you want to bring down in cash, and that's around 2500-3000.

All of the WIN bank ATMs are know to not give you money but still duduct out of your account.

This is definitely true, so BEWARE! My account got charged twice. I finally got the money back, but after going through my bank back home. Winward Island didn't help much, but not too much of a surprise.

No matter which ATM you're using, be cautious. If you get your card back and no cash (i.e.- transaction error, unable to process...) make sure you check your statement closely.

Scotia is fairly reliable. No troubles so far.

I never had trouble with the RBTT in Maho...
