Has anyone tried to download music or video from one of the major file-sharing networks to their own laptop in the Laptop Lounge?

Does anyone know where else on campus we can hook up our laptops and still download music?

Such activity is prohibited on the University network and is not allowed ANYWHERE on campus. Please see the IT department for more information.

Im sure they are blocking all outbound ports used by such programs on the campus firewall.

In other words, do that stuff from your home DSL :)

You shouldn't share your music online anymore. RIAA plan to sue random hundreds ppl.

laswuits will only be directed at people in the us... if you have downloaded files from other users in the past, you should share as much as you can before you return to the us in order to "spread the wealth" before you go back. we're all in this together and right now you have the ability to function as one of those danish porn sites where it's ok to provide free access to images of humans performing grotesque sex acts upon animals and deformed humans. wear that badge proudly!

The RIAA is the ultimate symbol of an oppressive corporate regime. They control the intellectual property rights of artists, and use that clout to run around suing everybody that won't tow to their unbelievable business practices. Hey, if your CDs weren't $18 maybe life would be easier for you guys huh? I mean, that is the greatest collusion scheme in the history of business.

Now a lot of groups are opposed to the single-based format of Apple's 99 cents/song system. They want us consumers to buy their whole album, so we have to pay for all the crappy songs too! Hey, if groups like the RIAA and recording companies insist on oppressing the listening rights of the very consumers that they depend on, don't be surprised that people will find a way to download plenty of music online, anonymously and even find legal recourses in privacy. Never doubt the power of the people, it will be your downfall.

Along with the fact that it is illegal and that the school could hypothetically get into trouble allowing you to do this, it would slow down the University network big time. Most uiversities have such a policy to keep their bandwidth open to those who really need it.
