Do most people get what they asked for (single or double) and if you are in a double, do they tell you who your roomate is ahead of time so that you can contact them? Also, how long until school starts do you find out if you definitely got housing?

Single of course. Why put up the hassle of a roommate, especially in an already high stress environment. And it's not that much more expensive.
