I was wondering: what or how long is the transition between an internal medicine residency and a specialty (e.g cardiology)
Thanx

Once you graduate from Medical School, you do a three year residency in Internal Medicine, then a three year Fellowship In Cardiology.
Take a look at FREIDA:

That should give you a litle more info on the topic. I also suggest you search other parts of the website, like the Residency Forum.
Best of Luck!

thanx researchingguy,
but i was specifically wondering about the general length of the transition period i.e.
- how long it takes to study and/or to schedule for the internal med board exams
- if one has to have a certain amt of experience working as an internist before applying for a specialty etc
thanx again..

I suppose you could go out and practice between your Residency and Fellowship, but I believe the vast majority of folks go right on through.
Check out the ABIM website for a little more info.
