3.55 Nurse Anesthesia program
2.99 Undergraduate overall
9 years of anesthesia practice: every type of anesthetic including open heart, epidurals, spinals, cvls, a-line etc. clinical....no problem mon!
no mcat
also EMT on volunteer fire dept for 4 yrs
missing org chem 2 although had biochem topics etc in anesthesia
only physics was in anesthesia school "unofficial but thorough" gas laws, temp. kinetics etc.
The point is Im ready but does my clinical experience outway the fact that officially I am missing a class or two depending on anesthesia school credits in chem/phy (contact hours 60)--If that counts Im good.
Anyone have any prior experience with a simular situation?

You're good to go, IMHO. The only catch I can see is the missing Org. Chem 2 and physics, but Gardner can tell you what they think about that. Give them a call and ask them.

Hey CRNA!
I got in without Orgo 2, and nothing in particular of premed.
But I also have my RN for 14 years, and MS in allied health profession.
I'd say they will consider you just with what you already have, because mostly all these physics and chem, or even zoology are really for those who just have some undegrad, and they need some health related credits as a core. If you've been licensed as an RN, or even advanced practice nurse, I'd say you'll have no problems getting licensed when you're done. Your nursing is your preprofessional education. But call the State board just to be sure :)
Heck with nursing,huh :?:
pm me if you want to talk :)

One thing you want to be careful with, though, is that some states may require that you've had certain pre-med courses for licensure along with a certain number of undergrad college hours.

Thanks for the replies! I was hoping to hear from someone that has walked the path I'm walking. It sounds like billydoc has. Im hoping that the admissions committee will take into account that I have been administering anesthesia for nine years and not worry about the missing organic. Like I said, according to my anethesia training transcripts, I had 60 contact hours of physics/chemistry. If they need a course syllabus I believe that I could get one. Anyway thanks again to those on the forum willing to give their opinions.

CRNA,

Physics isn't necessary, and neither is the MCAT. The only material issue is your lack of Org2.

I contacted the admissions departments of Saba, St. Mats, SGU, AUC, and Ross. They all indicated that there were no waivers of prerequisites under any circumstances. I even tried to do a sell job on the idea of self-teaching, or private tutoring in Organic, and they said "no."

Billydoc, you got into Saba without Organic? I think I'm going to pop a vein!!!!!!!!

I suffered through evening Organic 2 classes for 4 months, 19 years after having taken Organic 1, with no exposure to chemistry in interim. I didn't even remember the elements when I walked into that class. It was the hardest B I ever got. It was harder than any law school class I ever took.

I'm starting in September. My advice to you is to apply, hope for a waiver, but in the meantime, enroll in a summer Org 2 class at a local community college. Alternatively, I believe there is an online course you can do. It was posted on this site when I was undergoing my Org nightmare. If you do a search of my posts, you may be able to recover it.

Send your Saba application and your letters of recommendation together. If you send in a complete file, you should get your phone interview within a week or two, and have a decision within 3 to 4 weeks. If you end up getting the waiver, you can drop the class. If not, you can suffer through it, and start Saba in September anyway.

Yours aromatically,
Bigguy

Hey Bigguy!
Yeap I did get in to more than one Carib school without organic 2, but I did have some biochem before, and a crapload of many clinical subjects.
Again, my stats were good enough for SABA, ROSS (before they've introduced MCATs), and SMU. I hope I will not have problems with State licensing down the road. But if G-d forbid worse comes to worse I'll take Orgo 2, also just about 20 years after the Orgo1   .

To CRNA: I don't think you'll have any problems getting in,but I'm not sure about September'05. But expect basic science to be equally hard, if not harder for us. It's wearing a lot of folks out, because most of us with clinical exp havebeen out of school for a while. It's very detail oriented, and lots of memorization. Remember, clinicals is where we shine, but the treak is to get there . Start hitting some books now and Good Luck :D

Hey, thanks for the replies. Its good to hear that at least they consider older fellows for the race! I guess if it is meant to be I will be there come fall. If not I will continue to pass gas(anesthesia talk) like I've been doing for nine years.

There's a student in fourth right now who visits the forum occasionally. I don't have the e-mail. They were a CRNA before they came to Saba.
As for old guys - I am (barely) living proof that they will accept us. :wheelcha:

As for Organic 2, BIGGUY, I feel your pain. When I took it a lot of my compatriots opted for Biochem instead because the local state med school would accept it in lieu of Organic 2. Apparently Saba will do the same. Give Gardner a call to be sure though. Better to do pre-reqs now than get out and find you can't get licensed for some reason.

Best of Luck!

HI CRNA:

I WAS JUST READING YOUR POST AND THOUGHT ID ADD TO IT. IM A PHYSICIAN ASISTANT NOW FOR ALMOST 6 YEARS AND I APPLIED TO SABA WITH A MASTERS IN CLINICAL MEDICINE WITH A PRETYY HIGH GPA AND I DID NOT HAVE ORGANIC 2. I GOT IN TO 3 CARRIBEAN SCHOOLS WITH THE CONDITION OF COMPLETING ORG 2. SABA WAS VERY FIRM ON THIS PRE-REQ, DESPITE MY APPEALS :))) THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE AT SABA ADVISED ME THAT ALTHOUGH I HAD COMPLETED PHARMACOLOGY THAT THEY WERE NOW REQUIRING ORGANIC 1 AND 2 FROM ALL FUTURE STUDENTS. THEY STATED THAT THEY HAD ALLOWED STUDENTS TO ENTER WITHOUT IT IN THE PAST AND APPARENTLY THEY HAD NOT DONE VERY WELL. I STILL SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT IT IS A NEEDED CLASS. THATS JUST MY OPINION NOW AFTER COMPLETING THE HORRIBLE CLASS.. I DID NOT HAVE PHYSICS EITHER SO I DID NOT EVEN BOTHER APPLYING TO US SCHOOLS. HOWEVER, SABA ADVISED ME THAT PHYSICS WAS NOT NECESSARY AS DID TWO OTHER CARRIBEAN SCHOOLS.

MY BOSS IS AN ANESTHESIOLOGIST AND HE WAS A CRNA FOR YEARS BEFORE HE WENT TO MEDICAL SCHOOL AT 35. AS FOR YOU BEING THE OLDER GUY... I CAN TELL YOU FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE THAT IM NOT THE TYPICAL AGE OF THE STUDENTS ENTERING AND SABA AND THE OTHER SCHOOLS DID NOT SEEM TO CARE WHATSOEVER!! I THINK THAT YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM GETTING IN TO SABA SHOULD YOU APPLY. I THINK ITS A GREAT MOVE AND I WISH YOU THE BEST. MY HUSBAND IS A CRNA NOW FOR YEARS AND HE WISHES HE WOULD HAVE GONE TO MEDICAL SCHOOL. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hi CRNA,
I have keenly read through all your comments and others and have this to say, go ahead and apply to SABA. The worst will be no and you can then register for Org.2 later. I see as a highly competitive potential med student with all your wealth of experience. Do not give up your dream and God will grant you success.

See you come September at the Island!

Regards!

Hi all;
I was taking a break from my Step 3 studying and like reading this forum. I'll be starting residency this summer, so I am filling out the paperwork. In New Jersey, the residency training permit application asks for the following premedical prereqs: 60 post-secondary, college level credits before beginning medical school, 3 credits of biology, 3 credits of chemistry and 3 credits of physics. That's not for state licensure, just what is required for my temporary license so I can do my PGY-1.
Good luck everyone.
