I have heard a rumor that SGU students do terribly on Step 2 (like a 30 something percent pass rate). Is there any truth to this, and more importantly, are there any statistics available on this subject?

I can't be exactly sure why the step 2 pass rate is lower but I think it has to do mostly with preparation. In my opinion, here are the 2 major factors:
1) Lack of focus
On the island we're all focused on passing step 1, and bombarded with much more information than we need to pass. However, there is a general lack of focus for step 2. While the various hospitals do have lectures etc for clinicals I think there is a lack of pressure to pass step 2. That is, students get kind of relaxed compared to how they were for step 1.
2) Lack of preparation
Continuing with theme of relaxation, I think that students prepare less than they should for step 2. I'm not saying that students don't study. I'm sure they do, but I think it's alot less than they were doing for step 1. As you'll realize, much of graduate medical education is self-directed and once we get relaxed and study less, it's detrimental.
I can't be sure but I think these two things definitely contribute. In general, the pass rates for USMLE 2 are lower for FMG's on the whole so there may be more reasons.

I completely agree with helpfulgrad. Its much harder to study while you do rotations but you have to. Even the US students have a dip in step 2 scores probably due to the same reasons.
30%....Wow! Who on earth told you that number?

It doesn't have to be that way, though. If you score a certain way on Step 1, and you utilize the same methods to study for Step 2, I don't think you will dip in your score. You really can't generalize this. You just have to study as hard for step 2 as you did for step 1. It is not impossible to do even during rotations. Especially if you are in a January class as you have a few more months to complete rotations with.
