There was an announcement in class about AUC working on a new high speed internet connection. Does anybody have any information on this?

As it stands now, the internet is borderline worthless most of the time. I often clock the speed here at school, just for fun, and usually it is as much as 1/4 the speed of dial-up, if that.

ok the skipper has three major complainats about AUC

the pop machine that does not work and takes my money

the candy machine that has a crappy variety of snacks.....it is annoying when at 12am you want some junk food and the darn vending machine is empty

the internet on campus....it is beyond horrible

i mean half time i cannot even remain logged into MSN messneger or even browse a few websites....

and when is internet going to be up in lecture hall 1.....i am going to be entering my 3rd semster and i heard that this was suppose to be done after my 1st semster

SGA--your mission should be to fix these three things

In this day and age where we are able to do research, get notes and other things via the internet...shouldn't we at least be able to do so with some form of regularity while pursuing our studies? I agree with the Skipper....

SGA has the influence...let's get to work on this!

I am excited about starting school at AUC in 3 weeks! I would love to be one of those people who graduates completely satisfied!

1) Yup, same as when I started back in the day...
2) You guys have MORE selection now than we did
3) We didn't even have wireless internet. # many posts during my first 2 semesters can be compared to the # of posts in 3rd and 4th and you'll see a drastic change.

Quit whining 2nd semesters!!!!!!

can someone give an update about the Wireless networks on campus and/or at the dorms.
Do you need 802b only or are they 802g now ?
And whats the extent of the wifi hotspots?
Are any lecture halls setup so students can plug in their laptops to internet? (wired..or wireless?)
I'm confused cuz I don't know if Skipper was talking about PC labs or Wireless hotspots.

wireless hotspots...lol...lol...lol...lol

the followin are what you can refer to as hotspots

histo lab--if it works
cafeteria

i know lecture hall 1 doesnt have a signal

the dorms has no signal--you set your internet up

the computer lab is a hotspot...

i believe one of the other lecture halls might get a signal

a wireless B will pick up the signal fine

You may also be able to pick up wireless if you sit in the middle to back of Lecture Hall 2.

So, after bouncing this internet problem off a few people, the consesus seems to be that it is an "island" problem rather than the schools problem.

I just want ot say that this isn't hte case as I am posting from Sugar Cane right now (a restaurant right next to school for those who don't know), and I clocked it at above DSL speeds.

At this site:

http://www.zdnet.com.au/broadband/speedtest.htm

I just clocked it at 672 kbps... at school I get around 5 I think..

Ok, I just made it back to school and clocked it, to compare the speeds for the same time of the day.

Histo lab speed is 24 kbps, and this is a good day.

There IS high speed internet at the school, but it is reserved for the professors, not for students.

Skipper

well something needs to be done and gets some of that high speed internet.....

like i said SGA bust some rear end and get at it.....

That's because you're getting wireless from the beach club's office.

Does it really matter where the wireless is coming from?

The point is, that we could have a fast, reliable, and stable internet connection on campus. This is available on the island, but we don't have it. In this day and age, its like not have running water, or a library.

The Beach Club's internet is definitely faster, but isn't always reliable. I don't know of any service in St. Maarten that is as reliable as we're used to in the States. Yes, it's better and AUC could look into another server, but they changed servers while I was there and it didn't seem to get much better.

thats only if they catch you... its not to difficult to hide yourself, especially on a wireless network

how is the internet quality off campus?

Skipper
04-18-2005, 09:15 PM
depends on what service, time of day, where you are at, how many people you share it with....

latelly caribserve has sucked...idl has be great....just depends

the skipper

stateofequilibrium

As Skipper said, it depends.

Caribserve offers much better support and reliability, have yet to hear anything about their wireless setup. On the downside it's on the slow side and very expensive on startup costs.

IDL is cheap on the start up costs, reliability, and service, but it's fast.

Can you get either service in the dorms? or are you limited to who the school has contracted with?

Skipper
04-19-2005, 10:51 AM
either one...

That's cool...Whichever works best...I just need to be able to do 2 things:

1.) Use my vonage account and
2.) Download tons of PORN!
