Okay,
So this title was a trick to draw you into my post. I thought it was humorous, yet tragic, that the post about SNAKES got 34 replies and 863 views, while my request for a MASTER LIST OF GREAT STUDY GUIDES garnered only 1 reply and a pitiful 127 views.
Hhhhhmmmm.......snakes vs. study guides.....yes, that's a close call deciding on which is more relevant to a forum dedicated to the study of medicine.
Anyway, this is a second attempt to guilt one of you folks who just graduated, or are sailing toward the end of fifth semester to throw us freshies some aid, and spill your guts on what study guides are great, and which are compost relative to the Saba curriculum.
I know there are previous posts, but it would be helpful to have the opinions of people who have just survived the nightmare.
Toss me a bone, throw out a few names. I want to start studying!
Where's the love?
Bigguy
Ps. Siddman, this post is not meant to in any way defame or denigrate your highly thought provoking inquiry about snakes on Saba. I found it highly entertaining.

I would suggest that you try to keep this post alive for a few days longer.. I would imagine that most of the fifth semester students are so excited to be finished with the basic science portion that they are not worrying about valuemd.. I know that most are doing what they can to get off of the island within this week!! I would venture to say that you will have an increased number of replies as more students get settled back in their home area.. If I was lucky enough to be a fifth semester student, I would gladly let you know what texts, reviews, and etc. that you would need!!
good luck

Well, I just finished first semester, but to be honest with you- your style of studying is the definitive guide to how you'll need to gear your studying. There are some of the upper semester's who read the text books and some who read powerpoint slides and do the BRS. Yet there are others who just come to class- go read the USMLE step 1 and find out any missing information they may not have fully understood in class. I is such an individual thing.
Study guides here at SUSOM aren't required for the prof's to hand out in the semester- so the only way you find out what they think is really important and high yield is by going to class - listening and getting their notes. So..yada yada ya... we first semester students will be helpful in getting you ready for your classes next semester since we've had the profs before- and we'll have some files ready to give you guys and gals.
It seems overall most students study the BRS while they do a specific section in class. Hearing the profs talk about the subject and then reading it in the BRS combined with questions about your knowledge helps drill the important stuff in your cortex. Everyone is different though  .
***I'm not a graduate, not even a fifth termer- but hope this helps.***

Actually busy studying for Step I (hard to believe considering how much I've been on this forum lately), but I'll throw you a few of the things I think are "must haves". I'm sure some will disagree but here goes:
1st - BRS Anatomy
Netter's Atlas
Moore and Agur's Essential Clinical Anatomy
Never found a really good book for histo
2nd - GET the STAR's Physiology by Costanzo*****
Get BRS Physio (also by Costanzo)
Dr. S's notes for Physio
Biochem - maybe Lippincott's 3rd edition (maybe something better out there
Dr. C's notes for Med Psy
Dr. R's notes for Ethics (the book is an interesting read but not necessary)
3rd- Any good Neuro atlas
High Yield Neuroanatomy
Murray for Micro (I liked it, but honestly, the Professor's notes are all you need)
Get whatever the new Genetics text is
Epi book is somewhat helpful for a few chapters, but Prof's notes are best.
4th- Path is a tremendous load of work. The prof's notes are just about all you can take.
Get Webpath free off the internet (go to google)
You don't have to have Robbins, (the STAR's Pathology by Goljan is very good) but get the Robbins study guide with questions (it's gold*****).
Get Pharm Recall and the Lippincott Review - a lot of memorization in this course. Start early.
PD - Go ahead and get a Bates - you're going to be a Doctor.
5th - Clin Med - The Prof's notes are the only thing you really need. They are excellent and should be published
Path - see above
Kaplan Review - Go to class, pay attention, take notes in your books.
Like I said, I am sure some people will disagree (and I was not the Valedictorian of my class) but I think these are a pretty good idea of what you might want.
Best of Luck!

THANKS FOR THE FIRST SEMESTER PERSPECTIVE. ON A SCALE OF DIFFICULTY, FROM CUPCAKE TO VIOLENT SUICIDE, HOW HARD IS ANATOMY?
WOLF, THANKS FOR THE BUMP MAN!

Bigguy, sorry I won't be there for your first semester.
Since Classic didn't answer and is probably still in Haiti on a mission trip, I'll say that Anatomy is kind of individual. It's a lot of memorization - how good are you at memorizing? It's not a cupcake, but heck don't commit suicide over it either. Yikes!!!
RG - look at you getting hit on here! Good advice!
There's also a series of PreTest books out there. I just got the Basic Sciences one but haven't used it yet. Q-banks are probably the way to go!
RG - when are you taking that beast again?? (The Step 1, that is)

hey
well, anatomy is a subject that can be looked upon as being extremely difficult, but again, with anything to do in life, if you put in the effort, you will get the results.
Coming from my perspective on the class, i thought it was managable and I enjoyed it a lot. Unlike some students, who didn't reallly come to lab after "lab time" to study, i lived there before the practicals and learnt from the bodies...i never used netters, my book is as new as it can be, however, there were others that learnt it all in netters and did well as well, so it really depends on the person that you are. I can't say for sure if i would have done better had i looked at netters and spent as much time in lab as i as I did, but I didn't do bad in the class and am happy with the results i've gotten.
The advice i can give you here for the 1st semester is, study the best way you can based on your study skills and habits, do not follow other people's way of doing things, as it might not be as helpful for you. Each individual has their own strengths and weakness and you need to find your strength and work on improving that.
What helped me most, was finding a few people that i could study with. Having a small study group where each one of us had our strengths and shared it helped me through this semester and i'm hoping it will be the same for the upcoming semesters.
Bottom line, if you stay focus and work hard, you will be fine. and the anatomy professor, he is just AMAZING!! I wish he would teach all the classes here....i've learnt a lot from him...he's GREAT!
good luck

Hello Swing and Confused,
Thanks for the input. I love you both and you may share joint custody of my firstborn! Apparently RG doesn't want it.

Big guy just a quick reply.... anatomy isn't a cupcake (at least not with frosting and colored mini-sugar crystals), but it's one of those 'what are you really good at' kind of classes. I'm not a visual memorizer so for me it was a daunting task (I can memorize organized list though so memorizing artery and nerve braches weren't so bad).
Although there seems to be some discouragment about using Netter, the atlas I brought into our lab group disappeared alot and I found him at everyone's table at one point or another. USE NETTER... he's worth gold in anatomy and in other classes when you need a reference (I've never heard anyone say it was a waste to buy the atlas... no one has that good of a memory).
As an aside, I'm slightly offened that I wasn't part of the first born child offer.

Classic,
Thanks so much, Netters will be ordered tomorrow.
I boxed my first born up this afternoon, he should be to you in 7-10 day.

Ok so everyone has already given you the important list of books to get, but along with Netter's, I would also advise you to get the Netter's cards. They offer a really quick review, and are handy to just carry around with you anywhere.

Thanks Algen, oddly, I had a dream about flashcards last night. I love flashcards and wish everything in life could be reduced to flashcards.
Maybe Classic will let you babysit my firstborn.
Thanks again,

I miss coming here for a few days and next thing I know I'm a stepmother and have people in love with me....
...what am I doing right here?
Then again with me bouncing around the eastern half of the country for the next several months for clinicals I'm not so sure hauling a baby around is the best of ideas.
Good luck with the coming semester all! Keep me in your thoughts as I pretend I know something about medicine for the docs!!
