there is a gym in the student center on campus. it has all the equipment to get a good work out in and enough weight to do so. there are there are heavy dumbells and plenty of 45lbs. plates. it gets packed at the same times that gyms in the states get packed at about 5 dont know why other than that is when first term gets out. if you get in there early though it is nice and empty. bring a walkman if you are not into reggae music blasting

you will notice if the histo prof is working out or not because all the 3lb weights are missing.....
gym is pretty good until you run into an unpleasant person who hogs the machines all the time.
when i was there 4 vet students used to grunt like they were laying eggs and hogged all the equipment and if you were there trying to use the bench press you would get the stink eye.
some people play nice others will make your time difficult.
the trainer there is awesome so he can help you out lots if you need it.

No need for a treadmill with all of the roads in and around campus (i liked the road around the airport runway). There was a running club active when i was there. Electronic/cardio equipment does not do well in the humid/hot environment of the caribbean (the gym is open-air if no one has mentioned that). There used to be 2 stair climbers but they succumbed to the conditions.
There is also a private gym located in Excel plaze, but i have no idea if it is functional post-Ivan. Rates there are pennies compared to a gym membership in the US. Good machines i heard and people liked it alot, but busy in the 5-6pm time peroid (as is the campus gym).

that gym in excel plaza was really good. i gave up fighting for equipment and machines with hanz and franz from the vet college.
the nice thing at excel plaza were the trainers who would spot you when doing exercises - or atleast help you correct your form.

There is martial arts teacher who holds classes in the gym on campus but I think its taekwondo. I think he teaches like 3 times a week including saturday or sunday cant remember.
WHo needs a treadmill when we have a hill that can give you the work out of your life. Just try running up that hill 3-4 times and you got your cardio for the day! :D

If the bus doesnt want to stop and pick you up or if you miss it, you can always try to run it down and get on at the next stop. A bus once didnt stop for me at excel plaza, I was so ticked off I was able to outrun the bus to the bank, despite having an ankle injury. definitely a good cardio workout, highly reccomend it.

As far as bulking goes, meh. They are lacking some fundamental equipment, but you can get by. My biggest qualm is a lack of military press setup. There are two squat racks, but one is useless. The gym has a state of the art intraroom airconditioning system that is extremely efficient (one big a** fan and some ceiling fans that don't work). In other words, you will sweat, but you get used to it if you are dedicated. There are 80 lb dumbells and then 95 lbs (nothing in between), but that is because some people throw the weights onto the floor and break them. That is kind of annoying, but you get used to it and just bump up the intensity.
Weight Loss:
You WILL lose weight at first, but if you are dedicated, you can put it back on.
Good luck, and cutting here is easy (limited food and a lot of hills).

All so Don't forget to mention that the gym is open 24 hours a day, well there really is no way for them to lock it down, they turn off the lights at like 2am or so but you can turn them back on. also there is only one elliptical machine but the weather is so nice here that running on the streets or the beach is great. I think there still might be a running club if not you can post flyers and start one up yourself, also there is a Hash run (no, not the drug hash thats what i thought too) some profs run it (dr. Champney) i hear thats fun and a good work out, they do it once i week i beleive.
Where is excel plaza by the way??? is it the one with the movie theater and the subway in it???? Is there any that knows if it is still open post ivan and what the hours are?

excel plaza is where the movie theatre, subway, TCBY etc... are all located, Dr H in biochem also claims to be a fan of the Hash (number 500 is this coming saturday)

A friend of mine talked to the guy who owns the gym at excel - he said he's aiming for the place to re- open around june/july (this may even be accurate, since the roof is going up quicker than I thought it would :? )
There is a running club - I've seen 'em,
I agree with a past poster: the road by the airport is really nice - and since it's basically a dirt road, you don't see any cars on it - which is nice, since you don't have to look out for them (on another road, cars are trying to avoid pot holes, and sometimes come pretty close to runners)
oddly enough I find that sometime around noon is the easiest time to get equipment in the gym - although it can sometimes be hot/sticky.
if anyone is just starting - bring a towel and water - you'll sweat......alot!! :P
Cheers,
Silenthunder

Hey, its nice to see someone else into bjj. I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to continue with bjj at St. George's but it looks like there is aleast one other person heading down to grenada into bjj. Let me know if you want to train.

the gym is being renovated so that it's no longer open air, and its going to be A/C'ed. Also, Chris, the trainer, said he has a whole new set of free weights. so he'll bring those out when the construction is done.
there are three ellipticals, two stairmasters, around 4 bikes, and then of course, the freakin hill!!
hopefully it'll be a good renovation with some good additions!

I hope they have rubberized weights for the new gym. People keep slamming the weights causing them to break. For the slammers, please stop. It only proves the weight is too much for you to handle.
