Similar to 5th semester...you do a power presentation or two..and you have the "good old" write-up. Larkin is a small hospital across from the 7000 bldg in Miami.
I would not advice doing FP here.

Airport Villa's is within 15-20 minute drive from the 7000 Building and the Hyatt. It is also in a central location and easy to navigate with regard to the clinical sites. A description from their webiste is provided below. Many other students stayed here and personally, I found it more than adequate in terms of my living and studying accommodations.
Airport Villas Miami Apartments we have some of the finest apartments in Miami. Our brand new fully furnished apartments, feature European style kitchens, new floor and wall coverings.
While Airport Villas is only minutes from Miami International Airport our suites are clean, quiet and cozy. Airport Villas is only minutes from downtown Miami, Miami Lakes and is also only five minutes from UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and less then 20 minutes from University of Miami or Florida International University, making Airport Villas one of the most accessible rental communities in Miami.

I lived near Jamaica Hospital. It wasn't the best neighborhood but it was conveniently located for those who had cars and those who rode the subway.
It's near the Jamaica/VanWyck stop on the E line and Jamaica Ave and VanWyck Expressway if you drive.
1 mile to CMC, 5 min drive to QHC..20 min ride on the E train into East Side manhattan. 5 min drive to JFK.
If you ask Ross for a NY housing list (i.e your clinical advisor) they will have several options available.
A.
Hey DBob,
I'm living in Middle Village (right in the middle of Queens) and love it. Pay $1200 a month for a 2 BR all util. included (whole floor of a 2 story house). Only thing not to love about this neighborhood is only one subway connect - M train (10 min walk from my house)wihch is great for Wyckoff, Jamaica, Kings, Peninsula and everything south of here but sux if you're headed north.
My wife got the NY housing list from the Ross office and just started calling landlords and asking lots of questions. Always ask the person to recommend someone else if they don't have an opening.
One think you HAVE to do is look before you buy. So many places sound so good on the phone or on a website and then when you walk in  so if you have to get a hotel for a few days when you first get here, it's worth it.
hope this helps, good luck!!

Larkin Hospital, owned by ********, is not a place any reasonable and well-informed student would want to be associated with.
In a presentation given by the New York Comptroller's office on "Procurement Fraud and Ethics", ******* is cited as a physician who "referred patients from his long-term facilities to Larkin Hospital". It is further stated by the presenters that these patients "had no medical need to be there", that ********"received Kick Backs from Larkin Hospital for the referrals", and "he received 2+ million from Medicare."

******** was investigated by the State of Florida for alleged wrong doing (see story in this newsletter)...

... and, through some clever legal maneuvering, got the case thrown out on a technicality.

Thanks alot for the info almd2b and ra2j. My wife and I have been looking on Craigslist.com, and there are alot of apartments on 2nd stories of houses. How is that working out for you ra2j? Is there a family or the owners living downstairs? Have you had any problems living in the same house? Once again, I really appreciate the info....
DBob,
Yes, the owners of the 2 story house live downstairs and they are the best. They have been very easy to work with and the woman buys my todler son toys and chocolate bars almost every week. A little thing but it's those kind of caring things that have made it easier for us to be so far from family and frends. I'm sure not every landlord situation is this good but there are good ones our there.

The Family Practice Core rotation at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami is the best rotation I have experienced.
The hospital also has affiliated clinics that serve the uninsured, over 15,000 people, so you can image the oportunities for learning.
Dedicated group of attendings who love to teach and spend time with us.
I also highly recommend following up with a Pulmonary elective with Dr. Manny Suarex, excellent training.

although it will still be a while before i get to miami, i'd like to hear some opinions about housing there.
there are two main options that i see.
1. get an apt at a central location in miami, pay a couple hundred more, and maybe a car won't be necessary?
2. get an apt farther away, cheaper, and rent a car. Say, $500 for apt, and $500 for car....
as for option 1, can you even satisfy both conditions in the greater miami area? Say, pay $750 per month, and ride the bus? Is it efficient? convenient? Is a centrally located apt close to places to eat? Or would I need a car 99% of the time within a 20 mile radius of miami.....
I was looking at the map here http://www.rossmiami.com/Student%20Resources-map.htm
and it seems the ideal location is somewhere around NW 20th St near the I-195.
Liberty Square seems like a good location too, but I wasn't able to find any rental properties on any rental websites.

One of the things I liked at Larkin FP Rotation is that they have a full time coordinator who is on top of every aspect of the Rotation. Very professional and conducive to teaching and learning.
The attendings in general are very receptive and eager to teach.
You don't just get assigned to follow somebody.

Honestly I dont see how its possible to get around without having a car down there if your clinical partner does not either. When I was there I did not have a car , but my roomate did and we were clinical partners. That being said, it still sucked not having one since I was always at someone else's mercy to get around. The places they send you to are never close, and the traffic is bad.
a car in miami is a must.
I can't fathom trying to get around miami without one.
Its not like NYC (which i was happy about).

Can anyone give me an estimate of how much the Airport Villas are per month for a 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom? This place seems to be the most favored choice, but are there other options? I've been on the housing list on rossmiami.com but it just seems a little bit vague.
I really just want to see what's available. I don't mind a little bit less, to save some money, but I really don't want to live in a crap whole. Well.... at least when I'm in Miami there's a grocery store, and a place to get my clothes clean.... not just dominican clean.

This place is great for ROSS students doing rotations in NYC. We're all ROSS students in this 2 story house so your not alone, it's in a good quiet neighborhood, the room is a pretty big one for what you get here, it's ~10'X10' , plenty of parking in front of the house, transportation nearby, in a safe quiet neighborhood, it's close to all CMC and Queens hospitals and 30 min. to Wykoff Hospital driving, trust me, you don't want to live near Wykoff. This place is NIIICE & CLEAN & newly renovated with all new appliances, fresh paint, and hardwood floors, as opposed to the usual crap-hole you get for ridiculous prices here in NYC. Anyways, the place is available now, call me at 214-783 3712 to check it out.
Good Luck

Why was my post about my Kaplan books removed?
ANSWER: The selling of Kaplan materials (books, tapes, q-bank data, etc.) is illegal and against the rules of the VMD Forum. Kaplan has legally declared their materials as their possession, and when you buy their review course, you are only borrowing them. Offering Kaplan books for sale is like borrowing hospital scrubs to wear, and then trying to sell them. Thanks for your understanding.

Connecticut Housing
After being sheduled to start my rotations at St Elizabeth and Prince Georges, I got confirmation that I was placed to start at St Mary's in CT with IM followed by surgery. St. Marys was my first choice, and after a long waiting period and having some good options, I thought it was not going to happen, but here I am now definately starting on Aug 2 in Connecticut.
Is there anybody familiar with these rotations that can give me any feedback and advise? and most importantly, where should I start looking for housing?

Mike,
Having completed my psych core at SEH, I have to tell you it was an awesome experience. A lot depends on where you get placed on the campus, but unfortunately that's not up to you. I heard the forensic unit was nice in terms of hours, but learning might be a little low yield. I was on Ward 5, which was terrific because the attending (1 of 2) rocked. Again, you don't have say as to which attending you're assigned. You will learn your psych from him if you're lucky enough to be on that team.
As far as living, you don't want to live in Anacostia, which is the area were you'll be. Your advisor should have sent you a list of rooms/apt available. I lived with family in Virginia and commuted daily (about 30 min). Good luck.

Mike-
Call up St. Mary's and ask the operator for Kathie Buker's phone number. She is in the department of surgery and she has a housing list. Housing is abundant and cheap in Waterbury.
Good call going with rotations at St. Mary's. Medicine is a Yale program- your residents and interns will be Yale residents and you get great lectures. You will learn a ton.
Surgery is GRUELING. Be prepared to get to the hospital at 4:45 AM every day to start working. But you do learn a lot. Good luck!

Hi Medtekboy!
I currently live in north jersey, and Jamaica Queens is about an 1 hour 15 minutes from my place without traffic (and i live about 15 min. from manhattan with no traffic also). Perth Amboy is in central jersey, it takes me about 35-40 min. to drive there on the parkway. It's definitely possible to drive back and forth, but travel times might be long. I don't know what you're schedule is like but in my opinion it might be too much for you to drive back and forth for 12 weeks. Hope this helps a bit.

A friend of mine has just bought a house, and has 3 rooms left on 2nd floor. I have seen the place myself, and it is very clean. Located near the JFK airport, literally a minute away from Belt Parkway. The location is convenient for almost all the rotation sites that Ross is affiliated with. He rented out 2 rooms already, and still has 2 or 3 left. For $500, it includes all the utilities and fully furnished rooms with TV! There's plenty of street parking, neighborhood is relatively quiet, but minutes away from everything. This is the best deal I have seen for an exceptionally clean place in New York. If you are interested, you can call him at 917-602-3071, his name is Jeet.
Hope it helps! (btw, i am not getting any commission for writing this ad!)

Hey guys, I'm in my 4th year doing rotations here in NYC at different hospitals. I have a nice clean room available ASAP in a house for ROSS students only. We are all ROSS students in the house so it's nice if you ever need anything and it's a safe, clean, quiet place to study. One room is open in a 3 bedroom apartment on the second story of a private house in a quiet, safe area. The whole apartment is newly renovated with fresh paint and hard wood floors, new kitchen and bathroom fixtures. The room is approx 10'X 11' and the kitchen and bathroom are shared with myself and one other person. The rent is $650. There is the Q4 bus line 1 block away, you can also ride it 10 min to the E,J,Z lines and also the air train to JFK. If you have a car like me, there is free parking in front of the house with no street sweeping regulations which is so nice and unheard of in NYC. It is pretty convenient for ROSS students that do rotations in NYC like myself. I have been living here for 6 months with no problems and am loving it.

To everyone that will be beginning your clinical rotations in or around Brooklyn, NY in MAY...I'm graduating and have been living in a renovated 2 bdrm apartment here with a roommate. Its very nice, spacious, and located on a quite street. Its actually the 3rd floor of a house, and the landlords are incredibly hospitable and nice. Its conveniently located to most of Ross' sites, subway station, shopping, restaurants, gym, etc. Parking is readily accessible.
If anyone is interested in more information, message me. If I had to do it over, I'd definitely choose this place again. For what the place offers, the rent is exceptional.

I am very familiar with the Paramus area. the question you must answer is do you have a car. If so there are motels and hmes in the area. The best way to find a place is to use craigslist for places to live and look up motels on the onternet. They are on route 17. Not cheap but its only for 6 weeks. On the other hand there are buses from the Port Authority bus terminal on 42nd street in New York to Paramus. If yo go to NJtransit.com you will see buses. do mapquest and you will get how long it will take from where you live in New York to get to Bergen regional.

Hey Singer,
Thanks so much for your speedy reply. I do have a car but I also was interested in looking into public transportation just to avoid the hastle of parking, gas prices, and having to drive to New York from Chicago. If you think that having a car is a priority or will make things a heck of a lot easier then I will definitely opt for that. In the meantime, I will start searching on Craigslist for a place and check the bus schedule per your advice. Any other info you can provide is more than appreciated.

I went to Bergen Regional a couple of times a week during my Psych rotation and I can't imagine not having a car. I believe that there are busses from the Port Authority, but do they drop you off in front of Bergen? Let's say they go to Paramus somewhere and you have to transfer (I could be wrong about this, just speculating) to another bus. Add to that your transportation to the starting point at the Port Authority and you could easily be doing two trains and two busses each way.
You put in a full day at Bergen. Signout is late in the afternoon. The days will get really long.
I had an away elective and tried the Craig's List (online)/hotel route for those 5 weeks. Nobody really wanted to rent to me for such a short period of time and I spent a lot of time on this. The cheapest way was to get hotels on Priceline, but even that added up that was on top of what I was paying for my apartment. In the end, I met someone at work who invited me to live there for half of the elective and it ended up saving me a lot of money.
My advice: you'll need a car for 6 weeks. Check with the school if they have a house near Bergen for students like you. Call the director's secretary and ask does she have any ideas for students in your position, or ask other students ahead of you. You might be able to find a short stay or "executive hotel" anywhere between the Lincoln Tunnel and Paramus (Secaucus, Rutherford) but it won't be cheap.
The only good thing is that it will be a reverse commute.
Good luck.

another thing to look into is www. sublet . com- it cost ~20US for a 6 months subscription, but it is great for looking for furnished places for a short period of time- my roommates and i used it when we had to come up to Long Island after Ivan- found a great place (5 bedrooms = 2900US/month in LI!!) for 4 months- was very helpful!!

Since the apartments you are speaking about require a shuttle bus to get to the Subway does it run 24/7 and how often?

I stayed in Downtown at a place called Hamilton or Hampton (something like that) aparments. (had gym, security, cover parking, the works!!) we were splitting 2/2 for $1700!!! you gotta check it out..it is worth so much more!! (it's at 555 NE 34th st. zip: 33137) was like a resort!
Anywhere downtown is a GREAT location b/c your always going opposite of traffic hour no MATTER where your going!
examples:
morning to ash: took me 10 min (woke up 30 min beforehand)
morniing to 7000: took me 20 min (woke up 45 min beforehand cause everyones tryin to get into the city)
way home from 7000: tooke me 15min (cuz everyones trying to get out of the city while your going into the city!!)
Its a beautiful set up!!! Trust me...you wont regret it if you find a decent place in downtown. Its also the center of the majority of your hospital sites!!! (incl. hatian studies, which is ** by the way)
GOod luck and enjoy!!!
feel free to PM if you have any Qs!

If you do not do the optional UMBR (board review given by ross professors, which most people would rather not do, and instead spend that time reading Kaplan and doing Qbank) then 90% of your time is at the Hyatt in downtown or clinical sites which are mostly in North Miami areas. Don't live in Kendall as your drive to the Hyatt can be an hour and a half, as it was for many of my friends, even though it is only 10 or 15 miles.... don't get fooled by people telling you otherwise. From Larkin area the drive can still be 40 mins each wednesday morning, and farther down Kendal Dr is insane. I lived directly across UofM and it was good. But i don't advise anyone living any more south then the North tip of campus. Coconut grove is great place in the middle, and lots of fun. Anywhere in the Grove or south you can easily find places ranging from 500-900 per bedroom. Check out the UofM campus for fliers and their websites!! Places north of downtown i'm not too sure about. South Beach is crazy expensive.
If you are going to do UMBR, its all different. 3-4 days a week are at Larkin just for UMBR. Once a week for Small grp. If you decide to waste your time with UMBR, then live closer to Larkin, or in the Coconut Grove area even.

Has anyone lived at Airport Villas in Miami? It seems like a good deal. The only drawbacks I can see that it is a bit of a drive from the 7000 building and is located next to the airport. Can anyone who lived there give me some feedback on how they liked it and how bad was the noise with it being next to the airport?

I'm looking for a female roommate for my second bedroom. It has its own bath.
It will be available March 2nd, but you can drop stuff off earlier if need be.
The building is brand new, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, hardwood floors, washer/dryer in the apt. Located on Western between Polk and Taylor, it's steps away from UIC/Medical District/Rush. CTA and UIC transport readily available, with I-290 2 blocks away and easy street parking. Really ideal for Med students as the Med district and city transport are very close by. Quiet building with all professionals.
It's month-to-month for those unsure of their schedules and furnished. All you need are your clothes. Rent is $700 with utilities included in rent.
No smoking or pets please. Me: Late 20s female, pgy-1. Rarely home-on q4 call.

Hello,
Could anyone tell me about places to live In Chicago. I am going to be starting Internal med at Jackson Park in September and ideally I want to get a place close to Jackson Park but I have heard that the neighborhood was not safe. I looked thru craigslist but I am unsure of how safe the areas are. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My two priorities are safety and close proximity to the hospital in that order. Thank you.

Hi,
Has anyone heard of a housing complex next to the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Is it for medical students who are rotating at Michael Reese. If so, how do we get in touch with them (does anyone have an email address or phone #) of this place? What is the cost? Thanks for your help.
as far as I know there isn't any Michael reese housing. There is an apartment complex right across the street from the hospital. Can't remember the name of it though

I worked at Michael Reese a few years ago, the apartment complex right across the street from the hospital is called Prairie Shores. Many of the interns, residents lived there. The area has been built up alot over the past couple of years. You are in the Bronxville area of Chicago. Close to downtown Chicago, China Town, alot of shopping. Just be careful at night,as you would in any big city.

There are 2 complexes...one is Praire shores which is right behind Michael Reese hospital and the other is Lake Meadows...which is down the road from Michael REese. Both are owned by the same management company. Prairie shores has a gym in each builiding, lake meadows does not. I think the last I heard, a studio at Praire shores was starting at $640 (the price gets higher the higher up you live). Lake Meadows is a little bit cheaper than that. Prairie Shores seems really nice and clean...never seen Lake Meadows but have heard it's kind of ghetto.
I'm sure you can google the numbers and find them that way.
Good luck!

Hey everyone,
My roommate is moving out of state because of good old ross and their crazy lack of OB sites so that leaves me with a room to fill starting mid November or even someone to come here in December either is okay. I am a 4th year student hopefully matching in 2008. I live in Queens a great location with a great apt/condo. The apt has 2 br and 2 separate bathrooms, two private parking spots, a washer and a dryer, a dishwasher, AC in every room, cable TV, wireless internet, and much much more. Males or females interested please let me know I can give you more information or even send pics. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks

Hello!
Does anybody know if it is easy to be placed in NY for clinical two years or in the northeast in general? I went to NYU for undergrad and it would just make things so much simpler. Also, is matching a spot in residency in NY easier than to most places, in other words, more chances to end up on the east coast?
Thanks. :)
