can the upperclassmen write about their experiences with where they rotated 3rd and or 4th years - including the the quality of living, safety of the surrounding area, if the hospital is in walking distance from available housing , etc. its just so mind boggling to choose from all the sites available without knowing more about them .thanks again!

Girls in psych? From what I've been told, though don't know about these days this information is a bit old, when doing rotations in the wards:

a) Know where all your exits are
b) If you can, don't be alone
c) Don't let a patient come between you and the door
d) Wear running shoes

A number of doctors have told me the same thing, but they were in medical school years ago, so dunno.

LSU shreveport, i posted about the rotation earlier and today was my last day. the rotation is not for those who like a structured site and hand holding you are given responsibility from day 1 and they seem to expect you to already know what yoru are dcoing. what you do depends on your attending as some only see kids some only do inpatient so be proactive and ask to switch services halfway if you are only seeing one type of patient they don't mind and are very accomodating to what you want to do.

during my exit interview i was told that i did very well. we talked about the intagibles like the patience and ability to stay calm during a patient take down or having a pt undress infront of me or yell at my face threatening to sue to me, things like getting along with the staff, understanding the pecking order, etc and attributed most to me being older having real world work experience.

he said by the time we get to clinicals we have the book stuff and how to pass the tests worked out but it is important to also learn medicine and dealing with people which is something many young medical students and interns lack he said.

i know one student in chicago, he said basically the same thing...that it isn't uberstructured and some residents are better than others. what they do have though is scheduled time in different settings (inpt, outpt, child, etc.)

the staff at brentwood and the lsy clinics are really good, security is tight and someone is available to go in a room if you want.....i am 6-1 240lbs and there were some people who were much bigger than i so as a woman it is something you may want to keep an eye on.

as for wanting to do psych, you will have yoru choice of programs and it is very lucrative. there is one doc who started here 6 months ago and he is already not able to take new pts.....

there are no apartments close to the hospitals, they are lsu, brentwood, willis knighton, doctors hospital, and schumpert and the neighborhood didn't look family friendly. i stayed at the lsu dorms, university court. its accross the stream/pond from the lsu campus and there is a bridge that puts you infront of the library so you can study. the hospitals though are 4 miles away so you need a car. the place is nice, furnished, gated, and $15 a day. there is on site 24h laundry and a pool/hot tub, 24h school police. the area around is really nice with everything you could possibly want, target/starbucks/krpger/chillis/ihop/ circuity city/best buy/gap/old navy/and all the fast food you want including micros favorite krispy kreme.

Do not go walking around the LSU med school site alone at night, trust me on this one.

You could PM rocky and a few other of us good ol boys from Lousisnana. S'port is just like any large city, use some common sence and stay outta the gettos

btw, did you ever get a chance to eat at Shoguns??? or hang out at polyesters?

Well, both Providence and KMC were great sites. Biggest difference is location. Living is better and actually cheaper at KMC. Providence is a larger hospital and you'll do your cores with students from a US allopath school(WSU), so quality control is good. Both hospitals you can do all 3rd and 4th year roations at one place. I changed hospitals for 4th year just for the experience of working at a different hospital.

I completed my Psychiatry rotation at Spring Grove, and am now at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore in the midst of Internal Medicine. Thus far my experiences have all been positive.

If you have any questions (what books to buy, etc.) I'll try to check back here often. In the meantime study hard and enjoy St. Maarten while you're there, most of you will miss it when you're gone. Good luck on Step 1 to all 5th semesters.

what is greenbook and is Pensylvania in the greenbook. Can I make my own arrangement, let say a hospital in Pensylvania....or the school will have to organize and I have to do what the school tells me.

Don't know about the arranging your own clinicals question, an AUC'er will have to answer that one.

A student, a few semesters ago, arranged his own core clinicals, but it's very rare and frowned upon by MEAS.

How do you go about arranging your own clinicals? Do you contact the hospital directly or the school associated with the hospital?

PA does not allow foreign medical students to participate in clinical rotations.

I doubt anyone's still looking at this string, but I'll be doing my OB/GYN and Pediatrics core rotations in New York since they're unavailable in the Baltimore area (where I'm doing Psychiatry, Medicine, and Surgery). Site availability could always change in the future; so while it's always good to think ahead, I urge the 1st-3rd semesters to spend more time focusing on studying and less on where they'll be for clinicals.

Yes, I'm catching up with posts as this is my 4th one. Perhaps when I hit double digits I can become one of those uber-moderators of the site.
