thanks nimitt for linking other threads, but my situation is different!!!!
okay, so unlike a lot of posters, i VOLUNTARILY applied for the MD/MPH. what i'm asking is, i'm ALREADY IN the medical program, if i have the public health on top of that, is it worth the extra half a year? or, should i call the office and say i only want the MD?
the way my proposed academic schedule works, i'll take terms 1 and 2 with the other first year meds, then my term 3 is public health.

if you are taking the MPH program just to pad your resume then i wouldnt do it. if you genuinely have an interest in public health the for sure i would pursue it. from what i heard its really not going to change what you get for a residency but it will make you stand out a bit from the rest of the pile.

if you are interested in PH...then go for it, but dont do it because you want that extra padding..then you would just be misrebale in the PH classes and probably wont get anything out of it.

I agree with the above. MPH will be an extra 1 not .5 years. My friends who did mph are 1 year behind me exactly. You are talking about 1 year extra tuition for MPH and if you are not going to use it then I really would not recommend it.
I did misinterpret your post, sorry!

if you are getting the mph with the intention of going into a preventive medicine residency (i just found out there is such a thing!), depending on the state u go to, u will need an mph from an accredited program, and the sgu mph program is not. my info. is second hand, you should look into it and get the facts...
good luck.

Actually, there are two ways to do the MPH. The one in which you get provisional acceptance will put you a whole year behind. With the MD/MPH they will split up your time so you are active between MD breaks and split some terms too. This will put you a half year behind your entering class.
As for whether or not to actually do it, I believe that you can pretty easily decide not to (or to) once your term begins here since you don't have any MPH till after 1st term (if I'm not mistaken). I knew people who started the MD/MPH and got hooked up and quit it midway through, and people who were here only for the MD, but when they heard A.M. speak they opted for the MPH too.
As for the value of a MPH, I think that the more you know about public health as a physician, the better a physician you will be. Of course this general statement will be more true in certain specialities than others. But, if you, like I, have the ideal of health in mind when pursuing medicine, then public health will naturally be a field of great interest. I look upon it as the real "health insurance". For instance, if you were involved in a program that prevented just 100 cases of Hep C, then your actions would be as significant if measured in life-years saved as probably 5-10 times as many liver transplants. (I am not belittling at all the wonderful work of such specialties of course).
I am still trying to find the butterfly responsible for the chaos chain of events which pushed hurricane Ivan to sgu...
