Can someone please explain to me how SGU costs 56k a year? Because that's a dam high number. I guess I should have seen it coming.

i think something is wrong with your calculation. most expensive year has been my 2nd year and even with the extra expense of being in miami for a bit im still under 50K with an SO and baby.
dr.nick and houstonian do you concur?

Yeah that 56K, that's not in Canadian is it? Tuition is about 38K per year, then you have to add in the airfare, living expenses, which comes out to about 45K a year if you live comfortably. If you can live off campus and maybe even share a room, don't buy all the books the school suggest, you can even cut out 1-2K per year.

They must have upped the tuition, I guess the incoming students are the ones going to pay for the hurricane damages. According to the budget they sent me with my package:
This is for the first two terms
Tuition:$28,324
Fees:$6,106
Room:$6,412
Board:$4,375
Misc.:$1,750
Books& PDkit:$2,090
Stafford Bank Fees:$555
Transportation:$1,500
Medical Insurance:$1,377
Grand Total: $52,489
Being able to go to medical school without taking a loan: Priceless
however that is definately not the case.
Can anybody tell me how accurate this budget is, I know the tuition is accurate, but does it really have to cost me over $10,000 for room and board the first 2 terms, and do they charge "FEES" every term or is it just the 1st two... the fees alone are over $6,000... thats apart from tuition!
I think I'm going to have to write a letter to Oprah... maybe she can sponsor my medical school education. It is tax deductable as charity donations... hey you never know

Everything sounds about right except:
1. Transportation may be more costly if you fly from a farther place, eg. miami/NY would be cheaper than say from LA or Seattle or Bangladesh.
2. You got almost $14000 on Room, Board, Misc, Books, PD Kit. The PD Kit is a lifetime investment I guess and that's like $700. With Books, you have to know yourself, Most of the books they made us buy first term, I really didn't use too much and will probably never touch again (eg. embryo). Kinda of a waste of money. As for Room, Board, Misc, I'm not sure how that money is allocated. If you live on campus, expect to pay $5000+ per year to share a room. Try to look for cheaper off-campus places. May not be convenient though. You could chop off about 3-4K on that budget if you live like a medical student (eg. bread and water diet)
3. Yes, you have to pay those fees every term, didn't remember them being that high though. Seriously, I don't know where they are going as the offices in Bayshore and in grenada are practically useless. It's like pulling teeth to get anyone to do anything for you in those offices and you're thinking I'm paying for this service?
4. Last resort to save money: You could cut out the medical insurance, don't listen to the university's propaganda of "your health is an investment b.s.", stay out of harm's way, and pray to God you don't get sick/injured and die in a place with over 1000 doctors/doctors-in-training.
Ok, kidding on that last one.

Good to know that 56k is an inflated estimate. I was surprised myself by that number.
I got the estimate of 56k from the recent thread "Too much $$$", which caused me to write my own post.

Ok first of all even if you buy all the books in first term, you can ask the upperclassmen which books were best for the other terms. They will usually tell you. And even if you do not buy the books, you can basically use the ones in the library and have them for most of the term. I have alot of the books, but dont bring them because of the extra baggage when travelling. Not able to pay ridiculous fees to travel especially when the plane always arrives extremely late.
Living off campus will cut down on your expenses alot. That is a fact. And there are buses that will take along a route that passes by malls and groceries. If you want to do a search of the island, you are on your own.
It is basically how you decide to live that is the big factor in how much money you will spend.

Then when you get to NY it is up to you on how much you want to spend on apartments and going out. You can save money and take out less money the next time around.

dear colleagues,
non of us should EVER complain about the cost of SGU, for what we get, i think its worth it, i mean, look at the facilities in grenada, continually improving. and MOST IMPORTANT, non of us were qualified to get into our respective state schools, so this is our only chance, and SGU is a for profit business and we are just paying to become docs because we werent qualified for US med schools. everyone just take a minute and come BACK 2 REALITY.

we better hope that SGU is a for profit business. Everone always complain that SGU makes too much money, it costs too much, etc. and I know I've had my share of complaints about tuition, but let's face it: if SGU wasn't in it for the money, we'd be in trouble. I hope that SGU makes more than enough money to stay in business because a bankrupt school that goes out of business doesn't look too good when you're applying for residency, a job in the future, when you're bragging about your education, etc. And BACK2REALITY nice one incorporating your name into your posts, it was very clever....hits the point home.

No complaints about SGU being for profit. The question is whether they offer a competitive service. While it may be costly to study in the carib (relative to your state school) there is no point in paying more than necessary. It is incorrect to say that SGU is the "only chance" a prospective student has several reasonable alternatives.
to speculate on whether SGU is competitive in what they offer.......
if they weren't, they would start having a problem with getting people to fill their first term spots..... and this isn't really happening. not yet anyways (to the contrary: they seem to be taking MORE people  )
of course, on the flipside : it seems as if average admission stats are starting to go down - perhaps indicating that they are beginning to accept lower quality students......
cheers,
Silenthunder
ps. Does anyone know if/when sugar shack is opening? Is it going to be the same type of food ? I was pretty happy at how fast the building went up, but am eager to eat there again :D
