i got into the dual degree md/mph for august 05 but reading the posts i'm not sure that's the best idea any more. has anyone gone through that program or have any thoughts regarding it?

also, if i decide i just want the md, do you think bayshore would let me?

i've already sent in my deposit and everything.

[quote="DrB"] SGU is a good choice for medical school but I can think of no reason to choose SGUs MPH program. [quote] Oh come on! What about the scenery? *sarcasm applied* And by scenery i don't just mean water and trees. :-)

drnick you must have had alot of free time and really bored to do that search... :) Well we did just get done with pharm and pathophys exams, and with the OSCE and BSCE2 a couple of weeks away, i have a little bit of "low-stress" time right now. But have no fear, i did that search a long time ago and saved the results for your viewing pleasure. :-)

DrB is probably the single most intelligent, articulate poster on VMD, seriously, but he should be the official spokesman for the Anti-SGU MPH Association.

DrB, it's a back door into SGU for those who can't use the front. I frankly wish i had availed of my chance at it as i would now be preparing for term 1 at sgu rather than have two terms at a questionable school with a questionable future under my belt.

I dont want to speak for DrB (so correct me if I am way off DrB), but I think what he is saying is if you have a choice to go dont. Not if it is the only way to get into med school. Besides there are other med schools that could accept the students without putting them into a MPH like program and these schools are respectable and get you where you want to go in the end so why go through MPH at SGU.
If you want to go to SGU and no other school and that is your only route then fine do it. But if the student has a choice or is electively doing the mph I wouldnt recommend it.
DrB has made some excellent points and cost analysis in previous posts that can help alot of students if they take a look at it.

Actually, I should revise what I said earlier. I stand by my decline of the mph offer. Where I really erred was in not choosing Ross, AUC, or Saba. (I actually didn't even apply to Saba as I felt the island was too small, but i am starting to learn that these types of considerations are emblematic of not possessing the requisite seriousness that is a must in this type of endeavor and being swayed by comfort factors is something that carries its own price down the road)

I must admit that the SGU MPH program is one of my pet peeves. I really think it is a disservice to students to entice them into an expensive, unwanted degree in order to gain admssion to the med program. I think SGU could come up with better options for students to prove themselves that would be more aligned with student's interests.

At the same rate, if students get lured into MPH when they could go to Ross or AUC or Saba, that is their own fault for not doing enough research and evaluating the options. I have a feeling if everyone who go offered this "backdoor" way into the MD program instead went straight into the MD program at other schools, the SGU MPH program would cease to exist. I still have yet to figure out why some students are offered MPH, others MSc, and yet others the audit option? Doesn't seem to be a rhyme nor reason to it for me.

They draw sticks to see where the student gets placed.

They draw sticks to see where the student gets placed. Ahhhh... now it all makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.
