I used them to study for the GRE and it helped a lot to learn new vocabulary. I also used them for physiology in undergrad and it did not help me that much. so I guess that is one plus and one minus. I think it would help if you were using them for the times that you are walking to classes and waiting in line. But since first semester students live in the dorm, I don't know that they would be that helpful.

A few students from the semester before me recommended flashcards so I bought a set for anatomy, in fact two sets BRS and Netter's. Although I like BRS for the clinical info, both BRS and Netter's were just unusable with this anatomy teacher. I found that I had no time. Even now as I prepare for finals I would rather look at Netter's the book than waste time with cards. I think most students in my class will agree. If you are still interested I can sell you mine

Siddman,
I've got the netters flash cards, and I doubt I'll use them much, they don't show much detail, though the drawings are good. I shipped them down anyway though, since I bought them already.

Contrary to pretty much everyone else- I love netters cards. I whip them out in histo and study all the time. I fall asleep with them at night half the time.... they're usually all over the bed in the morning, with a pile of clothes and the occasional beer bottle. I'm sure the maids must think I have some sort of weird anatomy fetish.

honestly though- i think they work for some people, others they don't.

For what it's worth, my roommate loves her Netter's cards. They don't show much detail if you're looking for structures related to a specific area, but if you are a green leaf and need to see how the muscle or bone looks in order for you to make a pretty mental picture, I would recommend them. I didn't have them, but I like Mr. N. MD have fallen asleep with 'Mr. Netter' a few times. (Unlike him, there was no CH3CH2OH involved  .)

Basically, if you don't have any background in physiology or anatomy, I would recommend them b/c they make it easier to see how things fit together.

Thanks for asking Mushmouth and Wolf, I've been working hard at trying to be a good student. It's amazing that you could actually study for 8-10 hours a day and not know everything about one subject like the larynx, or the eye and the optic tract.
Since the end of the semester is coming up, I've finally adjusted to the feeling of constant stress and always being overwhelmed- so here I am... back in action.
Just FYI to any students coming in May, I'll be at orientation and hopefully I'll have some pictures to show from a medical missions trip the Christian Student Organization is taking to Haiti. :D
Wolf, I'm sure I'll see you there.... can't wait to meet all the new first termers (so glad I'll be in second!) Apparently the May class is really big, I hope no one collapses from oxygen deprivation or heat stroke during orientation since the classroom isn't too big.

later-

I completely agree with djinbh! I thought that some people had a competitive advantage when they pulled out the Netter's cards at the beginning of the term; I acquired the software version of the cards from an upper semester (you can get tons of free software here!)

However, I never used it.

I would have to disagree with Classic's following comment (good to have you back though Classic):

"Basically, if you don't have any background in physiology or anatomy, I would recommend them b/c they make it easier to see how things fit together."

I would say that you should ONLY USE the cards if you already have an anatomy or physiology background. If you do not have such a background, like most people including me -> you need to focus on Dr. S's notes and spending time in the lab. At first, you need to become comfortable with the cadavers and then focus on 3D visualization of where everything is.

Do not think that 2D flash cards shall be a shortcut to success. Only use them after you thoroughly know what has been taught in the block, and need to just peruse them quickly to refresh memory. They do not contain all the details that you shall need to do well on the exams.

Good luck![/u]
