I just wanted to give a "heads up" for students who might be considering loans by the Paras foundation, based in India. I was "conditionally approved for this loan." But, it may not be legitimate.
They claim to offer loans for Saba students, among a host of other caribbean and non-caribbean schools, but Saba has never heard of them. They require "registration" and "counseling" fees that are non-refundable.

It does seem questionable, especially if they are marketing loans to Saba students and the school has never heard of them. I read their website and looked over some of the schools they mentioned.

Still, something just doesn't seem quite right.

Thanks for the Heads-up, Wolf.

Best of Luck!

Shhh....man, I told you not to tell!
p.s.-- If you get a subpoena for the "incident" involving a goat, it wasn't me!

Uh wolf..... if you have a problem with "incidents" with goats, this is probably not the best island for you to come to. Fortunately there is an active chaper of GIA, or Goat Incident Anon on Saba if you need help with your problem.

I'm wolfvgang22! ;) heheh..

as I mentioned on the thread that wolfvgang22 gave the link to, I took Paras for my undergrad at Penn State. I am from India, though, so their counseling fees made sense to me.. they did a whole bunch of stuff outside of just loan paperwork..
I've not spoken to them yet, but thinking about it, if I'm going to be going from the U.S. -> Caribbean, I might now ask them to charge me only for the loan paperwork, and not the other stuff they do. (that was helpful when cominng to the U.S. from India)

About the company, though, I've visited their office which is in the heart of the business district in Bombay, and I think they've invested too much to run away with 1 student's 60 bucks or so! :)

I'm glad to hear that, I'll keep my eyes and ears open to learn more about this possible loan source. Right now Saba's financial aid department doesn't endorse this loan (at least when I talked to them last month). I encourage all students to talk over financial aid with the financial aid office in Gardner when considering loans. Perhaps this is one they need to know more about, also.

I actually applied for a student loan through my bank before I started on Saba. They said they actually recognized Saba and let me apply (I did it in person). However Saba didn't recognize them. Now I'm with Bank of America, it wasn't a fraud thing. It was a technical thing - I'm not sure of the semantics behind it, but some things need to be done before Saba can accept loan money from an organization, even if the organization says they work with Saba.

Obviously the company isn't a fraud since someone used them before. The only loans we can actually get, however, are Teri and the new HealthXpress.

Toodles!
