Hi, all fellow ROSSers!!!
Hmm.... Am I going to write something good about AICM, am I going to tickle your brains with useful information, or give away answers to the final? Well....
No, I'm just going to bitch... 8)
1. Main pain in my gluteus maximus:
A Miami Professor-->Do not, and I repeat, do not listen to anything the man tells you because the TA's do all the work, he doesn't see your papers or your PE's or anything... He likes to compensate for his inabilities at either medicine or life by making everyone elses's life a living hell... Just a note, you will probably get a marginal on your paper even if you have an excellent one, so don't even try. They told us straight up, they just have to fail about 70% of the class. He says that we should all be professional and courteous, and yet his secretary doesn't even know how to talk to people, she is rude and calls people to their face "a pain in the ***" well that's professional, don't u think????? He talks about "COMMON CURTESY" but you know what, you have to tackle down ******, because he is omnipotent, and you can't just walk into his office. Oh, best of all during the final, he assigned seating, and someone sat in the wrong seat number like in 32 instead of 23, and he says outloud in class: Dyslexia won't get you far!!!!!
2. "Path teacher"
hahahahahahahahahaha*******WEll, let me tell you, he is no *******, he is just about as smart as *******... Actually he just reads the info to you in class from the little book that a Miami Professor thinks is valuable clinical info. WEll, its just as valuable as that Passarge Genetics Atlas
3. Rotations
WEll, if you don't habla espanol, don't come to Miami. HEHEHE
You may now wonder why? WEll, if you didn't know everyone hablas espanol, and if you don't, you're out of luck, because they will look at you as if you are stupid. Most of our rotations went something like this: We would show up at 8am, and stay there until 5pm or 6pm, just standing, (we are NOT allowed to even touch the patient) Oh, and the best part, is that not only the patients, but all the doctors speak ONLY spanish, and I repeat, the REFUSE to speak english, or explain anything to you. So if you like being a MIME, get a job as one at least you will get paid.
Driving anywhere in Miami takes about an hour, oh and you get yelled at by 2 or 3 consecutive teachers for being 5 minutes late even if you spent the last 2 hours in traffic.
Well, enjoy Miami, and all the hastle and all the frustrations!!!!!! And remember, either Hable Espanol, or don't come!!!!! If you really don't want to be insulted sarcastically in front of many people, don't come here.
Do 5th in Dominica!!!!!!
 Dissappointed in Miami

what's with this? They must have really killed all of you in 5th. Didn't anyone on the island ever WARN you guys about 5th? You are realizing all this now?
In terms of papers, yes, it is known that he doesn't look at any. Of course the TA's get all the work. This is all known. It's Ross afterall!!!! You actually think anyone works????
In terms of not knowing spanish, get used to it! You are best off to grin and bear it OR grab some change and buy a spanish dictionary OR get a spanish-speaking gf/bf to help you learn the easy way. If you plan on doing your clinical rotations in New York LEARN SPANISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miami is the most disorganized program I've ever been to!!!! I've never seen any program where the facilitators and their helpers or fellow teachers do not communicate to each other. This is the most subjective "EDUMACATION" I've ever received. I've never been graded against the policy of whether a teacher likes me or not, or whether he is having a good day or a bad day. I expect professionalism from the faculty because I exhibit it as a student. If they do not respect us and do not treat us as collegues, why should we respect them or anything they teach us. And really, if they are gonna tell us that everything we learned in Dominica is Crap, then why not do 5th semester during ICM in 4th. A professor ****** can come down from his "throne" and teach it to us on the island, and then there would be no point to Miami, we could just skip it!!!! But then his position and status would be unnecessary and he would be out of a job. I honestly did not learn anything in Miami that I did not know before. Just acquired Frustration and dislike of Ross that I never had before!!!!!!!

Dr Braniac;
I don't think the final grades are out yet. I know that many students had to stay an extra week to retake the physical or redo the write-ups etc. As far as bing told 70% must fail how can you write such lies. My son just finished fifth in 9 weeks and actually thought he learned something especially how to work 12 hour shifts in clinics. He also learned how to properly do rite-ups which will help him greatly when he is in clinicals. He is studying 8 to 10 hours a day for the USMLE part 1 currently and hopefully all that he learned at ROSS will help.
I guess you figure you failed becuase why else would you talk this way. Maybe you figured you spend your time on SOuth Beach and not ever study. Unfortunately 5th semester is difficult. Everyone should keep the good study habits they learned in Dominica while in 5th.
dr. braniac,
Guess you should have gone to a US Med School....
Oh yeah, I forgot.
5th was good for my kid.

To you, gratefull parents!!!!!
Well, first of All, I did not fail, I actually got an B in a 9 week!
Second of all I've had much clinical experience and worked in a hospital, and not being allowed to even touch a patient during Miami rotations is not something I expected
Thirdly, I know you all are grateful that your kids are in med school, so is my mother, but this gratitude doesn't last very long when you are exposed to the disorganized unprofessional, frustrating program like Miami.
Moreover, the 70% fail rate is actually a number from a VERY OFFICIAL source, and if you bother to look into it a little more, you will see that every semester the number is the same. And we were told that there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with our paper, they just already gave out all the A's and the rest got a Marginal or an Unsatisfactory, because if everyone put in the good work, and got A's their jobs would be unnecessary!!!!! I also am not stupid and realize that every semester there are stupid people who don't want to do any work, and think they can get away with it, but this is MED SCHOOL, and I take it seriously. Having a 4.0 from the island, really helps me to distinguish in that manner. I know i put in 150%.
Miami is great for those who kiss gluteal not for those who are trying to do the semester justly
So, I am not complaining because I failed, and you should re-evaluate your views on Ross Miami. Dominica was a wonderful experience, and I would do it 10 times over.

I kinda agree with you!
Soo...If your adaptable, flexible, work hard, have a positive attitude, and do well... you're a KISS gluteal??
When you get to clinicals/residency you're going to look back at the prof as a Saintly mentor.
Best Wishes for your Success.

It was either high B or A, don't remember other than the fact my kid was satisfied with the outcome. The important result was the Step 1 score that was above the US average. My kid is not a STAR nor a genious but will make a very good, dedicated, caring physcian.
Parents, parents, parents. . . Ross should hire you to recruit unsuspecting innocent hopefuls with dreams of being a Doctor. By all means, be proud of your children, no one would ever argue with that, however, disagreeing with students that are experiencing Miami isn't the smartest thing to do. You aren't there, you aren't going through it, and furthermore your little boys and girls may not be as straight forward with you as these posts. I don't bother my parents with Ross politics, that would cloud up there dream and ruin the wonderful story they tell of their kid in medical school. Parents, be not ignorant to what we go through, don't undermine other students, we are in the same boat as your kids.
Dr. Braniac,
I couldn't agree with you more, I feel like these 9 weeks were a waste. I had no complaints of Ross, in fact on the island i was an advocate and often disagreed with students who were very negative and had all these conspiracy theories. In Miami however, (and before I get shot down by the parents, I passed everything, got an A on my PE and was praised by the Doctor who evaluated me) my point of view has changed. After completing 5th I often question, "what was the point?" My rotations were a waste of the time I spend in traffic to get to them, I would never ask a question for fear of being treated like a complete idiot for having a potentially invalid question, and they contacted me to repremand me for something they made a mistake on. On the island, I would speak to any professor with ease. Living on Dominica was very difficult for me, I didn't like it at all, but staying there for 5th seems to be a much better decision any day, I would take Dominica over Miami any day.
Best of Luck to all on STEP.
From a global perspective...Ross will facilitate achievment of your ultimate goal, to become a physcian. If you could have gotten into a US school I'm sure you would be there. So is your point to discourage prospective students from this opportunity because the Miami experience is not optimal, the primary language of the locals is Spanish, and the traffic is horrendous??

Singer, FYI, it is still possible to spend time in SoBe and excel in academics. When I was in Miami, i spent 4 nights a week partying, the days were for the clinicals, and the time inbetween were spent at the library. The good study habits will never go away, esp. when you have to pass board exams. After spending all the time in Dominica, the students need to re-experience life again, and appreciate what they have and dont' have.
Btw, where is you son, and why isn't HE expressing his feelings? Why do you have to convey what he says?
(just wondering).
A.
Oh FRNC perhaps you don't understand. The post is under AICM, which is the 5th semester, aka miami semester. I was responding to several posts made on the Miami semester specifically. I deliberately stated in my post that I had good relationships with the prof on island, and my experience there was notable, and I would have stayed there for 5th sem. My comments are specifically towards the "Miami experience", as are the other posts under this heading. I would never discourage anyone from going to Ross, especially the island experience. My concerns arose when my collegues parents started bashing us for expressing our opinions. All I am trying to do is inform other students who are still on island and have the oppurtunity to decide if they want to do 5th in Dominica or Miami, I would have liked to have had some insight when I was deciding. My post was to help inform current students in the process of makin a decision, I am sure they didn't misunderstand what I was saying, afterall, they are students and we are in the same boat so they would understand more so than a parent.
I am by no means Ross bashing, I am greatful to be in Med school and to have gotten this far. I cant help but think you are being patronizing with your comments.
Did you even know that we as students had a choice of doing 5th sem in Dominica vs Miami?

I am entering 4th year this week. I finished 5th semester April 2004. I have done a few clinical rotations and I have yet to benefit from 5th semester. Every attending at every rotation wants you to do your writeups their way, not the miami way!!!! My friends who have done rotations in other states all share this opinion.
FRNC, real attendings are very student friendly and supportive of medical students and residents. Miami is not at all indicative of how attendings act in the real world. To those of us who are familiar with this man, the adverb 'saintly' should never be usedin the same sentence. Grading in 5th semester has and always been very subjective.
Brainiac, the prof. is way out of touch when it comes to Step 1 preparation. Get a good pathology review book and focus on the common pathology cases for Step 1. Don't dwell on the numerous exotic diseases. Just be glad you are done.

Geez JB!!!
Sounds like you need a class in "Tolerance".
I didn't think 5th semester was as bad as dr. braniac made it out to be. I mean, this guy just sounds bitter. By the way, get used to some subjectiveness to your grading. That's pretty much how it works in the clerkships, too. It's not just a Ross thing, if you've got friends in U.S. med schools talk to them... it might lessen the shell-shock when you happen to be assigned to a malignant attending.
