Shipping Food

I fear that customs will take this away from me. Here is what I plan to ship in terms of food:

5 boxes of cereal
almonds
4 tubs of oatmeal
2 tubs of raisins
2 tubs of peanut butter
2 tubs of whey protein

What do you guys think? Will they take any of these away from me? I dont mind getting taxed. As long as they dont take this food awat from me

they wont even care what kind of food you have in your suitcase. For 4 semesters, I loaded up my suitcase with nothing but food that I bought from walmart and each time they opened it up to inspect it they didn't say anything. I don't know what the policy on raw meat is but I've brought steaks, porkchops, hamburger patties and stored them in a cooler with dry ice and nobody ever said anything when they took a look inside.

Just bring it with you, it won't get taken away.

I'd bring as much food as u can so you can save money and avoid eating the crap they serve at the shacks. It probably gets old eating the same old stuff everyday from the place.

You can pretty much bring any food u want in ur suitcase. The only thing u have to declare is meat. If you bring it in it has to have the usda stamp on it. Other than that you wont have any problems. They never tax you on stuff u carry in but anything u mail in they will hit u up on taxes.

BTW: the have reduced the weight on the luggage. Now it is 1 bag 50 pounds. or 2 check bags 25 pounds each. You can still have one carry on and one personal item (laptop bag). My wife just came down here last month and these were the new ruiles which started in March. Before these limits were just for domestic flights but now they changed the international limits too.

Just out of curiosity how did you carry meet on a long flight. Didn't it spoil?

It was packed in a cooler with dry ice with no problems. Just have to write what is on the outside of the cooler whats in it.

Usually customs agents are only interested in things that areavailable on the island. If you are bringing in items that are not available, they are less likely to tax or tarriff them. If it is something that they think you are going to sell, they tax it. (especially if it is something like clothing with the tags still on it) If you are coming in with a large group of students, they rarely inspect bags...when asked about contents, your answer is "personal belongings". They only time items are taken away is if it is an illegal substance or object...and that would be just plain stupid on your part. Hope this helps.

A large zip-lock baggie, like the kind you might use for "leftovers". I included candies, small packages of oreo cookies, small snack bags of cheetos, doritos, granola bars, etc.. Yes, no duties on anything, food, books, clothes, personal items, as well as electronics. Just the "luck of the draw", I guess. :wink: FRNC
