actually, wht they really need is a full functioning, KFC/Taco Bell dual-chain restaurant, open 24 hours. that place would make SO much money...and it would be good if it was fully stocked (not like the "Sorry, we are out of chicken" response you get when ordering any time at the KFC in roseau).

It really wouldn't make very much money at all. Even being open 24 hours, 1000 students aren't enough to keep a regular KFC chain in business any longer than a couple of days. The locals wouldn't use it much either.

KFC is in Roseau, 2 hours south of RUSM. Not even Portsmouth could support a KFC. Their prices are way out of reach of the average Dominican. The best they can hope for is the tourists and IMF dignitaries who hang in Roseau.

They also use a business model that seems common in Dominica: under supply the demand. That's one way to make sure they don't pay inventory costs.

regarding the water gun.

I was just reminiscing about my undergrad days when a good old fashion watergun fight was common during the summers. During the winters it was nerf guns and tracer disks. Anyone know what those are ?
I guess people are too busy here for something like that.

I only stopped by the beach party to pick up my sandwich then go back to the library. Looked like lots of people were having a good time. I'm impressed that though it was the rainy season, the sun stayed out high and hot.

originally, we were told the KFC adn a McDonalds were planning on opening in front of the school. but good old dominican politics, the govrenment said it would put the shacks(local business people) out of business. so they said they had to open in Roseau. well, Mickey Ds said nuts to you all, and KFC opened in roseau. as for no dominicans being able to afford it, then why was it packed every time i went there?

I don't believe anyone said NO dominicans are able to afford it.

Well, St. Vincent isn't too far from Dominica in either culture or mean income, and both of their KFCs are packed every single day, all day long. Not kidding, it is amazing to see, because it is expensive! But they somehow manage to scrape together the cash!

And Black_Pride, if the KFC in Dominica is anything like the ones I am talking about, the recipe is light years ahead of the "Colonel's Original", cause they know how to put some SPICE on that stuff! Never had a KFC that good....a little vanilla ain't gonna touch it, my man. :) Them Caribbean people know how to cook! Why do you think I married one!?!?!

What this place needs is a nap area.

I've been up since 7am today staring at slides.
And many times I've stumbled in to class without enough sleep.
And of course there are the food comas.

If they could just set up couches where I could lean back and snore for 20 minutes it would really help.

Now off to memorizing the atlas.

That's an excellent idea! I could use a nap a lot of times when I have an hour or so in-between classes or am waiting to meet with a prof. :)

Dorms with generators...this could solve a lot of problems....student landlord problems, safety and electricity!

you say the KFC would not gain any business as the locals cannot afford it. However, how would you explain the hefty business at James Store? They charge me over $1 US for an 11oz can of vanilla coke. For six cans, we looking at over 8 bucks US. For that money, you can get 4 times as many cans in American supermarkets. However, people still pay this premium, along with the premiums paid for pretty much everythign else in James store...as everything there is wildly overpriced. However, the students and locals still shop there. I am quite sure a 24 hour Taco Bell/KFC would do the same...especially good business from the students. Who would want to get sick from food at the Shacks when you could get considerably better food from a TB/KFC...something we're more accustomed to. Besides, perky's pizza is a chain store also, and that place is still not out of business.

I haven't seen a local buy canned soda.
Canned soda prices are outrageous. Just buy the bottles for $3EC.
Or have the shacks pour it into a cup for you for $2EC.

As Prof. Lambert said, "why you buyin' all these imported tings when you can get the same nutrients from Dominican fruits and vegetables for much cheapah."

James especially, but Tinas too, seems to have two kinds of products, generics that locals preferr, and brand names that americans can't seem to live without. Maybe they use the markups from selling brand names and student unique materials to help keep the generics prices down ( and keep their local customers returning )

having been born and raised in the US, i think many of us feel more comfortable buying brands we are familiar with. Look how much people fight over the difference between coke and pepsi...people actually have sharp preferences amongst things that taste the same to a lot of people. But that is the way we were raised, I dont see a problem with that? You're right that we must make do with what we have, but when these things are slowly being made available, I would prefer to have them whenever possible...as I trust it. As far as the coke, I usually get the bottles...24 10oz bottles. But i never really liked regular coke that much, and only started to drink more "coke" when vanilla coke came out last year...thats why I am all over it and willing to pay the high price every now and then. From your quote of Ms. Lambert, I am assuming you are a first semester...if you eat at the shacks each day, you are bound to get sick at LEAST once per semester from the food. I got sick first semester, and it wasnt fun...especially since it was right around shelf time.

Yep I was getting sick in early on but it's tapering off. Guess I'm building resistance. That's been my strategy from the beginning though. Just eat what the shacks and seaside cafe give me. I've been lucky that the sicknesses didn't coincide with the Mini. By the time I leave the island I'll have a keratanized calcified steel alloy stomach.

Better than spending 16 months having my choices restricted out of fear.

i too ate at the shacks...every meal, UNTIL i got sick. and i thought i was resistant to any bacteria...but in reality, you're really only resistant to minor spells of diarrhea and such, until the real stuff hits you one day. There was an email sent out to the 3rd semester class about it too...i guess a lot of people were struck by it. NOT fun...waste of almost a week.

What this place needs is a nap area.

Don't spend much time in the library around exam time, do you? There's gotta be about a dozen years worth of sleepy drool built-up on those couches. I'm surprised the cushions are not stiff as a board at this point.

those couches have been removed from the library. I heard it became too social so they were removed and they put up these quiet area signs to keep people quiet. Doesn't feel like its done much at all. There are now tables there which have become group study areas.

the only couches left in the school are those that are found in the SGA now. Which is like 2 chairs and 1 couch.
