Does anyone use skype as an internet phone? I was looking at the website and the softwear to dl is free. the website says its free to talk computer to computer. to call from a computer to a phone is 20 cents. Does this program work in dominica?

I use skype here on the island. I dont think you can use it at school. I know they don't want you to use it but not sure if it will work. I used dial pad for awhile but the delay became horrible so I switched to skype. I have internet at my apartment and it works fine. I think it is 2 or 3 cent a min.

it's like 20 cents if you want to call TO dominica. but calling home is like 2 cents.

nothing gets through the internet at school. and the internet at school is slow anyway, so your conversation would be unbearable if it did work.

at home, skype works fine 95% of the time.

Whenever my phone, internet, or power go out at home I go to the school and use skype. It is NOT filtered by their system, it is the only thing that works at school that I know of.

I dont know anything about those programs but I can tell what is the best way to call home in my opinion. I use yahoo messenger voice. It is free and my family back home have a camera (25 dollars at wal-mart) and I have one here on my laptop. I talk with my friends and family at home every night for at least an hour (I know, I should be studying instead). It is better than the phone because you can see all of them while you are talking to them and even do conferences with 2 or 3 people at once. The only downfall to it is you cannot call a regular phone with this system.

Anyone here use Vonage? I heard Vonage will allow you to actually get a telephone number with a US area coade. So, apparently you can get a telephone number with the area code you want so all your friends that call you are basically making a local call. AND your outgoing calls are totally free to anywhere in USA or Canade.

I have a vonage phone. It is $25US a month plus the original $68 for the router. I have a local area code form back home. When people call me it's a local call for them. It is unlimited minutes, has voice mail, caller ID, 3-way, call waiting etc. It sounds like a regular phone line.

REALLY?! That's a great deal. 25 bucks a month and you and your friends don't have to pay international long distance? I checked them out on the internet and they make a VOIP telephone adapter that plugs into a router. They also make a router with a VOIP telephone adapter built in. So what kind do you have? Hard to set up?

I got the router that has the built in phone jack. It was very easy to instal. Basically it is plug and go, you plug your DSL modem into the WAN slot of the router, then you plug your phone line into the phone 1 slot of the router and your laptop into one of the ethernet ports of the router. you turn on the router and are ready to go. it takes about 5 minutes for the phone to start working because your router automatically downloads some info.

While I don't think VOIP (Voice Over IP) was very widespread when I was on the island I do use it now just like regular phone service here in the States. As mentioned abpve Vonage is an example of this service. I have been using a company called LINGO. It costs $19.95US per month for unlimited local and long distance in the US/Canada/and West Europe. It comes with voicemail, caller-ID, and all those extras that a regular phone company makes you pay for. You must have an always-on internet connection, but it calls Phone to Phone and sounds just like a regular phone. The reason I mention this is that you can get a local US phone number in your home town (where most of your family and friends live) and bring the small box with you to Dominica. So all the calls that your family and friends make to you in Dominica will be like they are calling a local US number AND all the calls that you make back home will be free (included in your monthly rate). The first month is free so you can try it out. You just have to buy the VOIP modem for $39 (shipped to you when you sign up) and bring it down with you. Another perk they offer is a member referral plan. SO, if anybody is interested you can PM me with your e-mail address and I'll enter your e-mail in the system. That way we both get a $25 bonus. there is a company on island called cis enterprise limited
it is more expensive than the others mentioned but it is on island (more convenient for the technologically challenged)

they cost 537 ec for the router box
and 85 ec for unlimited calls, caller id, 3 way, etc

the catch is is that you must have dsl
which is another 129 ec from cable and wireless per month
plus their outrageous refundable deposit (700-1000ec)
the cis company works with marpin but i got it after i put down my hefty deposit for cable and wireless (the local phone company).


even though it sounds expensive, the amount of money you/your family will spend if you talk to them for one month makes up for it in my opinion.
