Dean Wagner, what are the chances that the school will supply microscopes for the sept class???? probably slim to none but just thought I'd ask.

I think your estimate is accurate. The Univeristy is exploring the feasability of providing microscopes for students. The scopes themselves are not much of a problem but maintaining them is. I seriously doubt that we will work out the kinks to be able to do it before September.

I agree with Dean Wagner that scopes will not be provided by then. I will tell you though that if you really want a scope that you can get one a lot cheaper if you wait until you get here and buy one from a student. There are always a lot of microscopes on the notice boards for sale. Having a scope is really not necessary first semester, I will say some people do use it 1st (not the majority--but obviously it can't hurt you), but the majority do not. I personally did not have a scope and just looked at the slides on my computer and I did very well on the lab exams...You do realize that the lab exams DO NOT involve a microscope right? Lab exams are pics on tv screens that you identify.

I bought a decent microscope on ebay about a month ago and have it here with me in Ohio. I've been trying to decide the best way to cart that heavy thing to Dominica. I even considered mailing it. Perhaps I'll leave it at home first semester. Do you get a histology CD for your computer as opposed to a slide box?

they do issue slide boxes if you want to use them, but the disc you speak of is available at the library..you can download it on your laptop if you have one...currently you will need a scope 3rd but that might change by the time your in 3rd.

Thanks Pablo! Very helpful. I'll download the information from the library. :D

Has anyone heard if the school has made any decisions about the microscopes and micro lab?

Trying to get the word out to new students to not buy from BIG, www.islandthrift.com should have microscopes/books for sale as does www.caribmedclassifieds.com check those sites out, they can save you lots of money/hassle with carting stuff down here.
