On the major streets of the island and the heavily populated areas there are street lights. When you get further into neighborhoods or in the less populated area there is less lighting. I never had any problems walking around at night.

also how often does the electricity go off???

In the year I lived on the island I had 2 instances where my power was out. One was during a lighting storm and the power was out for about 30-45 minutes. The second is when a car hit a pole and knocked the power out. This lasted for only 2 hours until the CUC was able to repair it. All in all the power grid on Cayman is very stable and power outages are rare.

are the summers really hot??

I was there for 2 summers and they can be pretty hot but rarely get above 95 degrees F. In addition, there is usually a nice breeze coming off the ocean that tends to make things feel cooler. In the summer I would be careful about how much time you spend out in the sun. Cayman is closer to the equator and during the summer the sun is hign in the sky and very strong (when compared to the winter). You can get a nice burn after less than an hour.

do you see many stray dogs chasing people on a dusty road??? i actually saw that happening to lots of people on my vacation.

There are stray (feral) dogs that are found roaming the island along with the owned dogs that people let roam free. In general, dogs on Cayman are pretty dosile and are more likely to run way rather than attack or even come near you. I never had any problems with these dogs.

Hope this helps

MDhero I'm surprised you've never been to Dominica, because you describe it so well!

Honestly...the best way I can describe Grand Cayman briefly: Florida without the awful humidity. I honestly didn't feel like I was out of the states...minus driving on the left side of the road! :D Hope this helps.

You dont wanna get bitten by a dog with rabies......and they bite everyone....because once they have the disease they get mad.........

the only dogs that i saw running around in Cayman were ones that wandered out of their owners yards, and were all super friendly. feral dogs, never seen them

As skidoc described, the Island is very close to the US infrastructures, but with driving on the left side.
Feral dogs are not common, but i think there are some on the North side, not sure though!
As the Island is marketed as high end vacations, they cannot really afford to have feral dogs running around.

If you live in West Bay there are TONS of dogs running around the streets. Some are owned and others are not. They run around in packs but are not viscious and will not try to attack you or chase you down. Also as Sebastien said there is no rabies on the island
