Q: for AUC, which hospitals in US offer all the cores so students wont have to relocate?

There are only two places at this time and they are very difficult to get into. One is in Bakersfield California, Kern Medical Center and the other is Providence, located just outside of Detroit Michigan. Other than England or Ireland, be prepared to move.
Really makes you wonder what all of these tuition increases are being used for

find out about new york. there is one from before and they just got 5 hospitals in new york i think someone posted that 3 have all cores, 1 has 3 and 1 is just psych. also most places you only move once bc of the region set up.

michigan and kern aren't difficult to get into as long as you do your part and get done on time....there are a fixed number of slots that they want to fill so they don't risk loosing them, they fill them with whomever they can, first is the ones that want to go there and if there is room left they put in whomever they can..... so if you wait three months leaving the island before step one you run into the next group of people and are no longer front runner.

want kern or michigan here is the secret: stay out of the casinos and put the money you would have spent on drink specials into coffee and don't slack off fifth semester, study for the boards while on the island, take the exam in the first group in your class and you have first shot...simple ain't it?

wow... thnx!!
Here's a second Q about AUC rotations:
anyone knows of people who transferred to AUC for rotations? I'm at a DO school in the US and I have just passed step 1. I really wanna transfer to an MD school.
Any advice?? am I crazy to switch a garanteed residency after DO degree for an offshore MD that would have me fight for a spot??

Thanx guys.. I am really getting all the right vibes from AUC.

Some more info for you on the new NY sites:(from what I have heard) Jamaica(Full), Brookdale(Full), Lutheran Medical Center(all except psych), Flushing Hospital(Full)

*disclaimer- It should be noted that this is not set in stone- and is only from word of mouth on the AUC campus-will post updates as we are informed

Okay,
Let me re-phrase what i said about Kern and Michigan. Kern only starts in January and August. So, it is all going to depend on your timing in finishing AUC. You can do everything just like you were supposed to and still have to wait 3-6 months for those specific spots. I took step 1 on Sept 16 and reported my scores on Oct 14, I was told that michigan was booked until July!!!!!! It is pretty much all about just being lucky enough to be going into clinicals at just the right time.

july is the only start date for michigan so you do have to plan ahead depending on the class you are in. problem is you don't know much of the timing issues until you start class unless you are on this board

i took step one the day after i left the rock, reported my scores and will wait seven months for michigan b/c that is where i want to be and there is only one start date, they said if not enough people go for july sometimes they can move 3 slots for september though.

i was offered, baltimore, new york, chicago, and ireland earlier but i want michigan so i wait.

its no surprise, if you want a particular site you may wait weeks-months specially if there is only one start date but there is no lack of slots. people from my class finished basic scince in december and started clinicals in the US in january, while others still haven't taken step one and those will compete for slots with the early test takers from the current 5th semester class.

i think its up to chance if too many people in a class wait to take step one there are more people the next clinical placement time so you can get screwed from both ends. the class ahead of me got shafted b/c many people from the class ahead of them waited to take the exam, then there were more people for clinicals added in to the boost in pass rate..it was a disaster and probably the reason why we have 5 new hospitals in new york now.....

just be proactove and plan your schedule....

How come G... is it that bad? Thing is after residency, i might wanna prctice outside the US as well. DO is not as recognized as MD.

all of us would think you are nuts for tranfering into third year from any Us school even DO...the only reason I would see it as a 'sane' choice is the one you stated. check out SGU, Saba, and Ross also b/c each school, alothough share some sites, have more of a presence in different areas of the US so depending on where you want to be one of the above may better suit you.

i think the advantage of starting basic sciences in may is that you have plenty of time to work with regarding the match. you cannot physically make the next years match so you already have to wait another year like rrod. so he has time to work with. plus...... the semester before the may semester starters are all rushing to take the usmle asap so they can start clinicals by nov to make the match in a one and a half years. so that leaves really no competition for spots for the may semester class. funny thing is that the may class is usually the smallest as well.

now back to the ncaa tournament....... i got burned on my pool with that bucknell win over kansas....... anyone else get spanked on that one?

the ny sites are not "full".....for right now, for the start dates currently and the number of spots yes theyre full. AS THEY SHOULD BE!!!!!!!!! If we dont FILL the spots we lose them. The NY spots open every couple months. If youre a 4th semester you may have a hard time getting into clinicals on time to make the 2007 match bc the 5th semester class is large and a lot ofus are waiting to take the exam. So we bump you guys. Unfortunate but the truth. Spots open on a regular basis. There are a certain number of spots at each hospital. And yes after that start date the spots should be filled. THATS THE PURPOSE. rumors rumors rumors

I would talk to the USMLE powers and your school to see if you are eligible to sit for the USMLE. I've heard of a few DO schools, esp. the new one that started in Virginia to make the DO and MD exams compulsory for graduation from their school. Besides, the only difference between the two is in title only.

Between the 2 hospitals in Baltimore (and the psych ward in catonsville), are you able to get all of your rotations completed?

Nope, I think you are still missing OB and Peds. Other than those 12 weeks you are all set. G

complete...you mean all cores?

The ones that are listed on page one of this thread...they have complete cores. The other has only psych.
Check that...I think Jamaica hospital has only all cores (including psych). The other two have all cores except psych...
Ya, that's right.
