The Christian League is good if you want to gain experience as a missionary -- not so good for future doctor. This group works mainly thru hosp. auxiliary offices and are assigned to assist in emergency rooms. They have to undergo thorough background checks just like all volunteers and employees.

They hand out toys, water, blankets, ect. and provide emotional support for families. They do help the patient advocates with blood pressure rotations, ect. and are req. to be cert. in a few things such as CPR. They are really just there to make the wait a little easier in the waiting room, the stay a bit nicer for the patients, help take some of the burden off the nurses and like I said provide emotional support.

might look good on an app. for a pre-med student....maybe this should be in that forum?

Yes, it would look GREAT on a resume. Plus, it would teach them a lot about self sacrifice and compassion. But not many med. students have time to volunteer.

I disagree - we aren't talking days here only hours. Most of our volunteers come into the ER for just a few hours on Sat. or Sunday afternoon. We instruct them to sit with the homeless patients, entertain children and assist single moms. To step outside themselves and try to improve someone else's life. To imagine themselves in the other person's shoes. You never know when someone is on the verge of giving up and one compassionate soul is all they need to keep them hanging on.

A person can only become compassionate through self sacrifice. A doctor who lacks compassion can do a lot of emotional damage to patients.

Okay, now I can see the benefits for a med. student here. I met the ACL president in Jersey. She was the most compassionate person I had ever met. I certainly don't want to shed a negative light on your organization. I admire what you folks are doing.

We are a small exclusive organization. We focus on the US. If, you are looking for overseas opportunities I suggest you contact the Missionaries of Charity. They are global.

You were taking a tour of the YMCA in Hackensack.

I have a question. I was volunteering recently and the CNA on duty would not allow me to give a blanket to a woman who came in with a high fever. When things like this happen should I report it to the charge nurse on duty or wait and call the auxiliary office next day?

While I applaud your efforts at volunteering in the ER, (since ER's are chronically understaffed, and staff does not usually have the time to do the "nicey-nice" things to make patients more comfortable), I am still kind of confused as to why these activities are being discussed on the Moonlighting forum... which exists to discuss residents/physicians working at other hospitals on the side...

Just out of curiosity... :-)

Sunshine,

Why did Boston go online before New York. Rumor had it you were in Jersey to set up the Jersey AND N.Y. offices and left early. What's up with that???? Left those of us who wanted to go to N.Y. this summer hanging.

I love the new site. But several of the pages that interest me are under construction. When will it be completed?

Becoming a 501c charity is the focus this year. Not taking on any volunteers at this time. Referring folks to auxiliary offices.
