As a MUA belize grad let me expand on # 6
A .) thumb drive: also called "jump drive" . This is a USB key sized object that is perfect for file storage. Made under names such as " kanagru" or " disk on key" they are cheap and very durable unlike zip disks. get the largest size you can afford , at least 128 megabytes.
B.)Laptops: I set up the network on belize and i administered it before i left and they moved so ....
Use whatever OS you like . All MUA belize's computers ran Linux. I adminstered the network and did my day to day work from a Apple powerbook G4 running OS X . The mac version of microsoft office had no problems opening powerpoint files. Acrobat PDFs and HTML files were no problem. I registered for step on my mac and am doing kaplan q bank on my mac. I have yet to find someting that i need that i can't run on my mac. Obviously there will be something that needs windows but Virtual PC allows you to run that odd program that is outside the norm. I used the schools network and even belize's horrible dial-up without a problem.
Bottom line Get what YOU are comfortable with so long as it is current and update with MS office or open office( linux) installed. If you run windows PURCHASE virus protection. Make sure you bring CD-Rs so you can back-up your important files.
