Are you going to Saba 28th of Feb, dreamdoc?

I'll also be in the market for a good vehicle when I get there near the end of April.

I'm oughta here the first weekend in April, will be selling mine looking to turn it over to whoever buys it then. It's a 1998 Asia Rocksta!! :) Basically a South Korean copy of a Jeep Wrangler. Hard top, standard transmission, has been a really reliable island car. Need to start advertising it around here, haven't gotten around to putting up a sign on the school bulliten board yet. Anyway, I really am not looking to advertise on here, because as far as looking for cars go, I wouldn't set any deals in stone until you get here & can check the car out & take it for a spin, unless you know someone on the island already who can tell you about it. Plus once you see the steepness of the roads here, it might influence your decision on whether you want an automatic or standard, that is if you can drive a stick to begin with! :) Once you get here though, if you're interested, come find me! :D If any of you other Saba students who are here on the island are reading this, you know where I am, come make me an offer!!

No Wolf Im not going the 28th of Feb although thats what it looked like in my post. 8) Im going with you on April 28th.

What's best a stick shift or automatic ? I would think a stick shift if the hills are that bad.

Wolf if you want to buy a car, you could look at the ones in Fla and I could check it out for ya and have it shipped from here. We are entertaining that idea. Im concerned about buying one on the island and then having it break down all the time and having to shell out $ to have it fixed, cuz it sounds like the island does a # on cars. Hasselfree ships cars from Fla and its 1650.00. We were thinking about getting a cheap car and shipping it...We were thinking that may be the same $ as buying one there thats been on the island and will need work. However, still undecided.

Dream,
I think the island is about to crack down on having students ship cars in. There are too many here as it is....

I think stick shift will be a wise choice because its easy on the transmission on hilly conditions....and do find out before hand if there is a person available to fix the car on Saba....it would be expensive to get it fixed from SXM.....

Stick is the best... one of the locals shipped down a one year old Ford Expedition 2 door and his automatic tranny overeheated causing some serious melting of some plastic pieces vital for driving. Thus, I suggest stick. Also, there are a few mechanics on the island who can fix just about anything. As for parts, thats where you run into the problems. If you are looking to bring down something Japanese, German, or anything out of the ordinary for the Caribbean, be careful, because parts are hard to find, and shipping em takes 2-3 weeks from the US (Note that KIA's are okay, because for some reason they are really really popular in the islands). Those are my 2 cents

Dream,

Hopefully an oversupply of cars will make it a buyer's market, and lower the cost of buying a vehicle!

Aren't Kia's made in Japan? Anyway, I know they are inexpensive and small vehicles for the most part, so maybe that's why they are good for the islands.

Great jeep for sale! Just got two brand new tires in the back.

PM me...

Wolfy... you still interested?

wolfvgang22
02-09-2005, 08:40 PM
Yeah, I'm interested. I even like the color.

I'll just have to see how the $$ situation is when I get to Saba in late April, though, if you still trying to sell it at that time.

Have a good one, neighbor!

Kias are made in Korea I do believe... and it costs 375 USDollars to ship a car from SXM to SABA.

To own a car on Saba, do you need insurance? how much does it cost? Do we need a Saban driver's license? Are there any high end cars on Saba, like any 2005 BMWs or Benzs

scoobz1981
02-10-2005, 09:42 AM
LMAO.... well, you will definitely not find any 2005 BMWs or Benzs on Saba... there is a 1995ish BMW 325i... but thats it... if you want to bring one there, I would only worry about who would fix it, cause when something goes wrong, there wont be a mechanic on the island who can deal with the electrical stuff (they can barely fix it at my local benz dealer). As for the Saba insurance, yes it is required... it costs about 250 a year, and tags cost about 80 a year (from what I remember). Also a Saban license is required if you stay longer than 6 months. The information about getting a drivers license is outlined in the Orientation day on Saba.

Holy snot Val.... where'd you get those figures.
Insurance is about $190/ year. Tags are about $120-130/year. Gas, last time I had the guy calculate it, was $3.50/gal. Driver's license is a one-time thing, costs about $150

scoobz1981
02-10-2005, 10:47 PM
Well, maybe i had a more expensive car than u??? LOL... I am just joking... I could have swore mine was 250 though (obviously I was ripped off... lol)... anyways... I think you are right about the tags... cause I always bought only 6 months for the tags and never the full year now that I think about it....

Nope, no horses, and only 2 donkeys that I know of, and they live very exciting lives tied up in one place most of the time. Not even as many goats as there used to be due to more strict laws. Sorry, you're going to have to get yourself that takes gas, not grass. :D

Ok, I will offer daily piggy back rides to and from school for a reasonable rate. Please PM me with your weight for a free estimate.

Man, does that mean if MUA ever gets NY and CA approval, we won't have goats and donkeys anymore? That's would really make life boring on the island.

Yep, just a couple of Donkeys (who can be heard at different hours of the day/night in Windwardside). Some folks had luck with motorcycles and scooters.
I do recall that guy who's now in fifth who rides his bike around the island. Otherwise, I never really had much problem getting a ride just by standing beside the road (or in front of Big Rock thanks to the guy in class who was 1 month younger than me - yeah, that's him). It is a heck of a lot more convenient having a car (and not any more expensive than it would be back home - probably cheaper).

As for sleek wheels, I think the best at the moment is the 300ZX with the left hand drive (straight from Japan). It belongs to that other guy in fifth.

Best of (Motoring) Luck!

Thank you guys for all your help...I am still interested in those two donkeys..... ..and by the way...wolfgang22 I think the rickshaw business might work..we can call it Saba one hour tour ride....and Audio thank you for the piggy back ride....but I weigh a Ton......  ...I guess those two donkey might worth a lot....may be its a good idea to paint them black and ride them like horses..

Hey....good one....  ......Don't worry ResearchingGuy, i won't park my donkeys in front of our University or near the dorm.......

Old buddy ol man...... you guys better watch out for those CA committee they are very peculiar about the goat : donkey: human ratio.....they might categorize MUA as a wild life resort instead of a Medical School...... :D   :D

.................and please don’t smoke weed.......it can do severe brain damage.......

Hope this Helps,

I am guessing that most cars on Saba are manual and if so...are they left hand drive or right hand drive......

Siddman

ResearchingGuy
02-26-2005, 12:48 AM
It's right hand drive, though a number of recently imported cars and trucks are left hand drive (the cars are all older and are supposedly being purchased by locals directly from Japan via a website).

I think the combo of the narrow roads, steep hills and fast speeds are enough of a trifecta without thye added excitement of driving right in a left hand drive car. Think about it

Best of Luck!

Yah i understand what you mean...in U.K almost all cars are right hand manual but then there are some odd ones that are left hands...don't know how they manage to drive those around...... here in Toronto most of them a automatic but i have a manual Honda Accord....... its going to be hard using your left hand for the gear....need some practice i guess.....thank you for the post

What I mean by right hand drive is that the cars drive on the right side of the road. The steering wheel is on the left. Saba's Dutch heritage won out.

Best of Luck!

Hey guys I'm new on the sight and moving down to SXM. If you wouldn't mind telling me how much is the regular unleaded gas per gallon in USD presently?

I'm might not want to buy that big V8 to ship down after all.

Researchin' Dude, it has become WAY too apparent that you have been doing too many review questions - you're confused.

Both of those guys (the one who rides the bike and the one with the sleeky-deeky car) are in FOURTH semester, not FIFTH. We have some weird ones in our class (fifth), but noone crazy enough to ride a peddle bike. ;-)

Go watch a movie or something, man! haha
