I was wondering if doing the Hyperbaric Medicine program is worth the extra money and effot? I'm trying to decided because it affects financial aid.

I do know that the local hospitals here in Texas have brand new hyperbaric facilities that are mainly being used for the treatment of diabetics with wounds, it's a popular thing right now.

Would doing the hyperbaric program be helpful in getting published, hopefully as first or second author?

hey
I'm currently 1st semester at SABA and took 2 hyperbaric medicine classes...the classes are really interesting and in first semester, it doesn't seem too bad...but i heard as u get to hyperbaric 2 n 3...it does become more time consuming...and the work in your regular MD program is also getting quite intense...ultimately the decision if up to you..if you can handle the load, i think its great...but as for me...i don't think i'll be able to battle both degrees at the same time.
Also, with helping...i'm sure a masters in this program will only pose as a benefit where ever you may decide to apply...hope this helps..
see ya in may

Hello-
I completed the Hyperbaric Masters Program while on Saba. I can tell you that EVERY interview I went on I was asked about it. The field is very small in medicine, but large medical centers have treatment programs, and are very open to people who have knowledge in the field.

Thanks, Mike!
Were you able to author and research papers while on Saba?
Did you start on the hyperbaric program from day one on the island, or did you wait until after first semester to do the masters?
Does one have to start it first semester?
Thanks

When I was there, you started in second semester. Not sure how it works now. You can volunteer as a tender (one who goes down in the chamber with a patient for 30min or so) during first semester and that way you get a feel for how it works.

In my interview a couple of weeks ago they said that you started the Hyperbaric program in your second semester.

Right now you can start the program in your first or second semester. It's recommended you start in your first semester so that you're not trying to finish up all of your paperwork and research during fourth semester, when you're trying to pass Pharm, Path and PD.

I started to take it as well when they first started the program back during my second semester. I ended up deciding not to do it, although it was very interesting. Several people are still in it though.

Yeah, I think it's like an extra $1,500 per semester. That's why I was wondering if one has to start in first semester; I don't have an extra $1,500 lying around for first semester.

I am currently in the Hyperbaric Program at Saba. I started in the second semester. You can start the program in the first semester. It is not a difficult program. The class is one day a week for 2 hours. Each week there is a quiz on the material from the week before. There is a ten minute presentation in the first semester, then 2 ten-minute presentations the second semester. The third semester there is research to be done. I don't think it is particularly time consuming, although it does take some time-management. The tuition is $1200/semester. If you need any more info on the program, I would be happy to find out for you.

are we talking masters thesis here or more like a professional paper/graduate project type thing. writing and defending a thesis is a pain in the ****!

also, what specialty of medicine will we have to practice in order to utilize the hyperbaric degree? sounds pretty internal medicinish to me.
