They base their admission on any 3 out of the four main Science subjects: Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. And base on the information you have provided, you might stand a chance of getting in. hey,

Just thought that if there's anyone want to know something about melaka-manipal medical college, here's some of the details. I am malaysian currently studying in this college and it's well recognised by both the private and government sector in malaysia. If you want to have further study or work in other places other than malaysia, you have to take enterance exam. However, most of the graduates from this college work in malaysia government hospital after their study for 3 years, then they can start their private career as a physician. I got a friend who was in Batch 1 just got enrolled into emperor college in UK doing pHD, after he obtained his "doctor licence" from UK. So i guess if you studyyyy hard, there will be a great future of medicine waiting for you.

Something about manipal, well..... It's kinda difference, i mean very different from home. Here in manipal, most people drive bike without helmet. If you wide a bike, you have to be very careful about the people, with the cars and with the COWS sleeping on the road as well. The education here is gorgeous, great lecturer and new buildings all around campus. There's a huge air-conditioned library and good quality lecture hall with both OHT and big screen. About the hostel, I think this is the ONLY place in the world where staying in Hostel is much more expensive than staying outside ( rent a house ). So i would recommend anyone who wanna come here to stay in hostel for the first few weeks and after that move out to a house with friends. You can easily get a house 5 min from university for around US100 per month. About the food, don worry too much. Most of the foreign student here have a chef hired, for US20-40 pe month. If you like to hang out, there's cafe, dominos ( home delivery only) and some cinemas which show pirated NEW movies. well, all i can say is that manipal is good place to stay, but if you do not study hard here, you gonna be here like forever. I have friends who has been here for 4-5 years and still in 2nd year medicine. So, all i can stay is if you want to come, juz study hard and play hard.

Hi Eugene,

What year of the program are you in? I am starting year 1 this March in Manipal, in the same program. Hopefully we can meet up. Do you have any pictures of the campus?

Hi singa,

I just finished my second year exam, waiting for the result and hopefully can go into clinical year next month, and after the clinics i will go back to malaysia. All i can say is don worry too much, you will make some really nice friends all around and I would recommend you to stay in hostel for sometimes, then you can either keep staying or move out with friends. For boys, i think none of my friends are still staying in the hostel because it's not worth it.... curfew, all the rules and regulations are pathetic. I don really have pictures of manipal, however u can have a look at " http://www.i-zonedesigns.com/images/3dimages/Manipal.jpg " , sketch of the office and library building. Also, i would suggest you to bring a laptop, coz adsl is easily available here, USD 20-30 for 128kbps, USD50 for 256kbps... I know it's slow, but it's better than nothing. Contact me at fcping@hotmail.com if you want to know anything, cheers

thats good to hear man...yeah i was at manipal during December..when i was visiting india. The campus is really nice, and all the new buildings make it seem like, at least for people from the US and stuff, that u are like back at home and stuff. Even the hostel is nice (AC, ur own shower, big closet, net connection, phone connection--id just use my cell phone, etc). A big plus is that the lecture hall and the boys hostel that i saw (it was AC) were like right next to each other, so u dunt have to go very far. I'll prolly end up riding a motorbike, so yeah...i'll have to learn indian traffic rules, lol. Anyways..im thinking about applying to manipal for the 05 batch, is there anything i should know about the app process? . Yah man...i'd just bassically be in my room or the library studyin all the time or at least most of the time...i wanna be out of there as soon as possible, lol.

hey dudes,

I don't understand why you Canadian guys/gals don't apply to Candian Medical Schools. There is a significant shortage of physicians in Canada and we need your help.

It only seems fair if the Canadian educational system supported you during elementry, high-school, and post-secondary (which is quite significant) why don't you apply here in Canada....and if not why not return to pay your debt to our great country?

Hey,
Many Canadians have tried diligently to get into Canadian Medical Schools. The odd to get into Canadian school are so hard that most of them decided to move south, or to other offshore school. To give you an example, if you have a GPA of 80% or basically 3.8 GPA, you have zero chance of getting into any Canadian Schools. On the other hands, most of US medical schools will accept you with that GPA. Personally, I got 86 in my first three years of science. I could not get into any of Canadian School. I kept trying for next three more years before give up my dream of becoming a doctor. So, It is not about them, it is about the Canadian System. If you really want to rag about this, please pent up your anger to Government.

Hi guys -- it seems like this thread is kind of male-dominated, but I was hoping someone could kinda help a female applicant out. Having visited south India (i'm from the US) several times in the past, I noticed that girls get treated *very* differently there (ie, you can't wear jeans without getting leered at). Is that a problem at KMC? Also, about the hostels...where do most foreign applicants stay? And I must be crazy, but I thought there was some requirement for first-year students to stay on-campus? Or was that just something my brain totally made up?

Anyway, ANY and ALL input/advice would be appreciated, because I have no idea what to expect at KMC (Manipal).

Thanks for your help!

wow..actually, plenty of girls down south wear jeans and other trendy clothes and stuff..especially in Bangalore, chennai and stuff. I dun really notice the leering, unless ur purpously tryin to get guys to either come onto u or leer at u (like what my sister did on our last trip..different story though...lol). But i guess guys will be guys..lol. Anyways, yeah from what i hear, all teh foreigners stay on campus in manipal, but im not sure if there is a requirement per-se for first years to stay on campus.

Thanks for the reply, Cali...it's been a little over 10yrs since I've been to India, so maybe things have changed. Also, I went to the backwaters, so maybe that's another factor I didn't really consider. Have you heard anything about the teaching style over there compared to the US?

CaliAtenza
03-29-2005, 05:53 AM
yeah i just went in december of 04 and summer of 03..trust me..since 10 years ago..india has CHANGED A LOT..and 99% of it for the better. U'll feel comfy wearing anything u want practically and some places, especially in the cities..u dunno that ur in india. Teaching style, from what i hear..is more emphasis on memorization and studyin for exams. Also, most people jsut study questions from old tests and stuff, and seek out help from the seniors. Im not sure how it is at manipal, but im betting its the same way. Im headed to Bangalore for school this aug..with manipal as a back up. It'd be good to get to know some manipal kids..i only know a couple..lol. BTW, im a guy and i don't stare or leer

haha, nice to hear that you're not a total perv

I've heard it's a bit of an adjustment for US students to come to india if they have had no experience with the Indian education style...i've been told that there's usually a learning curve of a couple of months, but most usually adjust.

It's a good thing you know some people going to Manipal...do you know what the average age is?

I have family in Bangalore...heard it's a fun place! Enjoy your stay there!

CaliAtenza
03-29-2005, 05:23 PM
hahah..glad to know..lol. Anyways, yeah i heard there is a learning curve as well, for a few months...actually maybe that whole first year...just getting adjusted to the teaching methods and what not. Im not so worried about that more than being homesick, lol. Yah, my whole family (both sides) is back in bangalore, so its like a second home for me. Hmmn, average age at manipal..prolly i'd say 19-20...with a few youngins (the indian students and some NRIs) tossed in there. Im still deciding whether or not to go to manipal or jsut stick to bangalore...seeing that manipal is far away from anything else and i might be overcome by that, lol (study habits, what not). BTW, u commin out of high school or college here??

Hey Cali,

I'll be coming after doing a master's program here -- I'm 24 years old. Anyway, I'm heading over there to visit in early June, so I'm pretty psyched to see what the campus looks like, and figure out crap like where I'm supposed to live and all that.

Lucky you -- your entire family is in Bangalore!! Everyone I know is here in the US, except for a few random people, so I know I'm going to suffer from some serious homesickness. I'm just hoping that there is a good internet connection or that long distance to the US is relatively cheap :)

Talk to you soon!

Nisha

wow..24!...yeah i'll be 20 when i'll be entering school...i feel old already :( . Yeah the campus is preety sweet...the NRI hostels are really nice and stuff. Yeah the homesickness is gonna suck, im gonna have it too no doubt, but urs might be worse :(. I guess teh whole first year is the adjustment period, then its ok afterwards. BTW, whats the deadline on the application to manipal (last i remember it was May 30th..but im not sure)..cause im still planning to apply as a back up, just in case. But yah..i plan to combat homesickness by partying whenever i have time, taking trips to Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, etc...stuff like that...otherwise i'd go crazy in teh head..plus i always wanted to visit these places anyways. Bangalore or Goa or other places..are just a night bus trip away, so thats an option if u'd want to look into that. Yeah i might possibly be at manipal in june, just to show my parents the campus..so i might run into ya..:). One thing i did hear..was that manipal has preety decent internet connections in the rooms itself, so that might be chill for ya.

Cheers!

I read the first line of your reply, and all I can think of is "oh geez, 4 years of this???" :P

Delhi, Goa, Mumbai...hmmm...nice -- you know all about the motherland, so I can harass you if I'm bored, right? :P And thanks for the heads up about the internet connection -- that's a good thing to know. My boyfriend was beginning to think he'd have to communicate with me via carrier pigeon.

I think the deadline to apply is in the end of May, but I think they've started notifying people of acceptances already, from what I've heard. My uncle's friend is close to someone at the school, and he kinda gives me a little bit of the dirt on things over there.

Anywho, good luck on applying, and I'll look for you at the school in June (I'll just look for an Indian guy...there can't be that many, right?? )

CaliAtenza
04-15-2005, 04:35 PM
hehe..yeah u can harrass me if u want..i dont mind..lol. Hahah.carrier pigeon might not be a bad idea actually (if the internet decides to head south, as it usually does in india), taking it back old school, hehehe. yeah my parents are like dead set against me going to manipal, cause i'd be away from relatives, the city, alone (might get into..lets just say..extraciriculars that i shouldnt be doing... ). Its ok though..i can always roll over there to chill and what not...i have a buddy there i met on the flight back from india..and i know u as well now, lol. Yeah look for me i guess (just another regular indian guy :D) ..i'll possibly be carrying around a motorcycle helmet and jacket, lol. One word though, if u do get bored of studying, the town really does suck; other than eateries, there is litterally nothing to do other than go to the beach and get drunk and party (if u are staying in the hostels, actually leaving might pose a problem, as there is a curfew and other strict rules...more so for the girls than guys, from i was told). Not to discourage u or anything, but drug use is rampant (im not sure its somethin u wanna get into during med school..other than possibly occasionly)..and there have been incidents involving students that go off campus and what not....so just keep ur guard up, like anywhere else.

honibrown
04-16-2005, 11:39 AM
I didn't know drug use was that bad out there...guess it's really different than what I expected. Getting drunk and partying on the beach sounds like my kind of good time, though

I don't think I'm staying in the hostels, although I thought you were required to stay there the first year?? Anyway, now my dad is getting on my case to get the visa thing straightened out, and I have no idea how it works. How do US citizens go about doing the visa thing for studying there?

havana
04-17-2005, 04:10 AM
Cali, you said that the town really does suck ??

seriously ? do people go clubbing out there ? is there a cinema ? lol

any info would be nice.

at least for me..im getting a PIO card..so i dont need a visa...its valid for i think 10 or 15 years...i can work, study, and go to india as i please. If you have time, get the PIO card..its worth it ($310 for the card). I was gonna get dual citzenship, but they stopped that (i'll get it when they re-instate the program). Yeah, i wanna get drunk and party on the beach too..but the thing is, if i start, i cant really stop :(, so i guess its best to do it only once in a while. Thing is...from what ive been hearing, i dun even think there is gonna be much time for partying :(, cause studying like 4-5 hrs a day is recomended from what ive been told..but im sure ur used to that...im not yet though, which sux :(. So not much relaxation for me, lol...well at least till i get my routine. But yah, just be careful if u decide to go off campus...common sense is key, lol. Yeah i think u are required to stay in the hostel the first year..then u can move out. The guy i met on teh plane that goes to manipal, moved out i believe his second year, and he's living in an appt with his gf, from what he told me.

04-17-2005, 11:14 PM
Yeah, for my master's program we had to take a lot of the first year med school classes, and let me tell you, I think I studied more in that one year than I did in 4 years of undergrad :? I mean, realistically, you don't really end up studying that much ALL the time, but it's something to kinda aim for, so you don't get overwhelmed during exams. About the parties -- when you work hard, you gotta play hard, right? :P I figure, as long as you know you're using your time well, and you're getting your stuff done that you need to do, it's always a good idea to blow off steam whenever you get a chance. As far as getting used to it...you've already shown that you're at least commited enough to get to this point. Once you get in a routine, I know you'll be fine.

Thanks for the heads up about the dual-citizenship thing...I didn't know they stopped doing that, so I guess I should look into the PIO card. Does that take a lot of time to get done?

I think I've become a FoodNetwork addict...guess they don't have something like that there, huh? Maybe it'll be CurryTV over there

^yep, im an advocate of "workin hard and partyin hard". Im planning on partying or going out and chillin whenever im not studying and stuff (reason why im staying in the city, lol). I'll prolly be parting in manipal a lot cause one of my friends from Chicago might go there..so i'll be kicking it with him. Yeah getting into the routine is gonna be tricky at first, but once i get into it, i'll be straight. Prolly the first couple of months is gonna be tuff..getting used to the teaching style, labs, stuff like that. Yeah i wanted dual citzenship (showin da love to the motherland), but they stopped it cause it got caught up in the indian paraliment...as these things usually do. Plus iono, i didnt want to be hassled by homeland security and US customs/immigration when i come back..but we'll see..i'll most likely end up getting it. Yeah i'd advise u to apply for the PIO card now..cause it takes at least a month for it to come (i havent been home in a few weeks, so iono if i have gotten mine yet)...u can do it at any indian consoulate or the embassy in DC; i got mine in San Francisco..went in person and stuff. Last time i went to india..i swear they actually did have a foodnetwork channel, but it was called something else...maybe i was getting dillusional when i was flipping through late nite tv, lol. But yah, are u still doing ur masters program now, or are u just chilin till manipal? cause im actually still taking all these ** classes in college...i could just be at home chillin..but i guess not, lol. I might just come home in may ( i have a wedding to attend anyways) or somethin though (help my dad out at his practice and stuff..if i come home early).

honibrown
04-18-2005, 03:09 PM
Hahaha! Gotta love the ** courses :) Actually, I'm still in my masters program, but I'll be done in mid-May. The second year of the program is really cake, so I was spending most of this semester just chillin until I realized that all play and no work makes me a very poor girl. So, now I'm working in my dad's business until we head out to India.

You seem to know, like, a million people that are going to Manipal! You're either meeting them on the plane, or you're already friends with them from before! I'm totally going to be that old-head that'll manage to wander around aimlessly until I get lost in the jungle. :P

Thanks for letting me know about the time delay for the PIO card...I really ought to research it myself, but I'm lazy I guess, hahaha! Do you know when classes start over there? I've tried looking on the website, but it's kind of hard to find any detailed info there.

CaliAtenza
04-18-2005, 04:24 PM
^hahah..nah not really..i only know a few people (2 girls..one more than the other, and a guy i met on the plane)...they just told me boatloads about the place, so thats how i know all this stuff, and i visited and met a girl over there that is doing her DDS (she's from california..her brother is at the school too). I swear when i met that guy on the plane, i sat next to him actually, it was like fate that i was destined to go to india for school, lol. Lately though, im hearing horror stories about indian schooling over at Studentdoctor.net, so iono..lol. Im not getting second thoughts, but still....Yeah i should be done with school here on june 17th..but iono, i might be leaving early..we'll see how things work out though. What im more concerned about..is getting a possible internship spot back here...rather than the schoolin there. Im gonna be working to get that internship spot, its gonna be tough, but people have done it...so im gonna try as well. As for classes starting, last year..the Supreme Court of India had a big mess...so it started late for all colleges across karnataka..this year, the same thing might possibly happen, so iono...the best estimation i can give u is like mid-late august, which is when i think my school starts too. BTW, what are u doing ur masters program in..it sounds interesting, lol.

Hey everyone, I was browsing the forums and wanted to post some thoughts, so I joined the site. I have read some interesting stuff about life in Manipal as far as med is concerned. See, here is the dilemma...until reading these posts, I was convinced that Manipal would be THE place for me, as I am an NRI living in NYC for the past eight or so years. Dont get me wrong, im not the party type (as is assumed about a lot of teens who live in NYC). Anyway, thats not the point. My question goes out to anyone and everyone who has experience in the KMC-AUA twinning program. Should I just go for an MBBS degree in my hometown of chandigarh or should i do this twinning thing at Manipal. I mean, if I am going to India for med anyway, is manipal a good investment? all that money you know...my parents are not filthy rich, and to all of you who think that NRI's get in cuz of the dollars, that may be true, but please dont stereotype. I am applying there strictly with grades and no bribes. I came out with a 90% as my final avg for junior yr high school, and have a 3.6 GPA based on 4.0 scale. I am a little concerned about the whole thing with subjective professors and unwelcoming attitude toward Non residential Indians. If someone is paying so much to stay away from his/her parents for so many years and go to medical school, he/she deserves a competitive yet welcoming atmosphere. I dont see how I can function in a community where i am looked down upon because I dont live in India and i paid my tuition in dollars vs. rupees. If thats the way its gonna be, then i might as well go to chandigarh (my hometown) as i am more familiar with the society, i can expect a certain level of objectivity there even though the down side will be that only 3 NRI's are accepted there and i might have to apply as an Indian resident. Ok, im confused now, someone help me out.
Thanks again people...i am finding out a side of manipal that i never knew existed.
In case I have offended anyone with my opinions/words, my sincere apology goes out to you.
TTYL all, Neha S.

Hey guys, im back.
I swear I would be out buying some stuff for senior yr high school (which starts in four days) if it werent for the rainy weather outside. So instead, Im sitting here giving my fingers the keyboard treatment and trying to soak up information on manipal like im spongebob...I bet it will be a huge adjustment for a punjabi to go down south for four yrs...I dont have a problem applying to american schools, I just thought that getting in touch with one's roots wont be a bad idea. Oh, one big question though, does anyone know about the bathrooms at KMC and the hostels? I mean, are they like really bad with messed up flush systems and that pichkari thing to wash your ***? They do have paper towels n toilet paper right? Ok, now i sound spoiled. I can probably get used to it all, i guess. Im someone who loves cleanliness and proper hygeine (did i spell that right?), good health and good living conditions. anyway
