I would like to do an IM residency and make myself as competitive as possible to get a fellowship afterwards..(i.e. GI, Cards, Nephro).

Now I do not know what factors are important in trying to get a fellowship?

Deos it matter where you do your residency in IM? If so, what are some top IM programs I should be applying to?

Do usmle scores matter?

Do I need to do some research at some point?

I would really appreciate your insight. thank you

where you do resdeincy matters to an extent alright; a good set up begets a good set up. THat's why imgs dont tend to do as well as harvard students, though ive met great imgs and dud harvard students. USMLE doesnt matter too much but you want to do well on the step 3 at least and if you do your boards prior to fellowship, obviously on that. But the things that matter most are your recommendations and connections you develop in residency, and research. Those are the big ones.

So I see that you went to SGU? how would rate your experience there? Where did you do your clinicals? Was it tough for you to get into a good residency program?
and reply is appreciated

very good experience. I did most clinicals at Brookdale in brooklyn, subi at norwalk, two in the UK. 2 outside at mount sinai in nyc (be careful w/outside electives). I didnt have a problem with residency but i had the advantage of some clinical puhblications which helped a lot.

thanks a lot for the info.so wait can you just stay at one location and do all of your clinicals there? i'm sure its better to move around rite? to get more experience that is.
i've never heard of publications during clinicals.can you elaborate on that.
so you are at Johns Hopkins rite now..what field did u do ur residency in? where did you do your residency?
thanks..

Steph--do you think it's a good idea to do outside rotations, "audition rotations" at places you'd like to do residency, or is it unnecessary?
