Saba has really lived up to all my expectations thus far. The island is very clean, people friendly, and school faculty helpful. Being slightly older, I did not want to stay at the dorms,so I found a really nice one bedroom apt. that overlooks San Martin and San Eustatius from my living room for $500 per month. Lara, the housing director actually drove me there herself the first nite. It has washer, dryer, cable t.v., A/C,and dsl service.(I pay for that)I bought a jeep from a student for 1200.00.
Classes finish around 4 (long day). I usually buy food on the windward side on the way home, then eat, wash up take a nap, and study till 10 or11.
My landlord is very helpful, and happy to have me there. Today I drove to the pier and bought lobster for $6 per pound!!
I will post some photo's soon.Right now I an trying to keep up with the pace of study.I hope this info helps others to get an idea of what it's like down here.

Thanks for your post! It's good to hear encouraging news from those who started in January. Many seem to go to Saba and disappear... for a while
Good luck on your exams!

djinbh,
I am a grad and I do miss the island. It is a great place to spend 20 months and it is warm! It is quite cold here in upstate NY.
The good news is that I am in the hospital so much I don't have much time to get cold! That is also the bad news. :( But at least I am getting paid (a little, but not as much as the housekeepers, per hour).
Don' t worry djinbh, if you are studying as much as you say that you are, you will do well on the exams. But please don't forget to look at the big picture and try to remember that the studying you are doing should be gerared to the USMLE step I.
Make sure you pick up study guides such as the Kaplan notes and things such as the BRS series, to see what is actually high yield for the boards instead of what is important to whatever professor that you have on the island. Trust me if you know all of what is in the study guide you will have no problem doing well in the classes and will kick butt on the boards, and if you don't, you should alert the administration and let them know.
I am glad you guys are enjoying the island and study hard for your 1st Black Monday. I remember that just after my first BM that a friend that was a 4th year who had already signed pre-match told me: "1 down and only 24 to go".
I could not believe how fast they went!!! You will be amazed.
Study hard.

its black tuesdays for first semesters now and we are back to the scantron... since there was some sort of problems with the computers.
I have to agree , you really need to study everyday here... else its impossible to catch up later on... Its true what people say though, there is really not much to do here! but there is no time to do anything anyways. We have been on the island less than 10 days... and we already got our first exam on the lower limb last Friday. We dissected the foot the day before ( on Thursday) so its really really really condensed. Fortunately Dr. Flay is an understanding teacher. too bad she is leaving in Feb. Hopefully the new teacher will be good as well.
