This was a major site where the many students from Spartan who have not passed the Step 1 before entering third year go to begin rotations. With the apparent loss of Griffin and other setbacks, where do current and newly graduated students think that the future of the school is headed? I know that shockandawe is incessantly stating that I am a pessimist, but what good is med school if you can't practice afterwards? I have heard that Saba is now enjoying recent NY approval after being accepted in CA. I ask shockandawe, what are the positives now? What good is paying pittance to go to school if the school is not going to be in existence due to improper management or students have trouble obtaining licensure?

1- If you do not pass stp 1, you are at risk of embarrassing youself and your school and you really should not be doing your clinicals in the USA until you at least pass step 1
2- For every hospital that closes a new opens up. ZAATARI did his rotations in hospitals that are no longer in existance... When I went to Spartan there was no such thing as St. Jo Provera in Elgin. People can go there and do rotations and they charge less than half of what Southwest charges. Do you know that Southwest used to charge 350$ per week!!!!!! No wonder they went out of business.
3- If Griffin cut off Spartan, that would be devastating for Spartan. Many of us had great experiences there.
Finally, Mindprobe, I am not saying that there are no negatives at Spartan, because we know that there are a crap-full of absolute negatives about the school from the administration and beyond. But there are positives as well and there are people that have almost no choice other than Spartan especially now with the new MedAcheiver Loan crisis. Positives such as the new campus, the expansions, the computer lab, the improved relationship with the St. Lucian government, the Prime Ministers visit, etc, etc... are never even touched in your posts, except to put down the school and its students, that is all you ever do. As if you graduated from Harvard. We have to be balanced and you mindprobe, are not balanced. You are just negative, pure and simple. I do not even think that you can help it, it is your nature. Let me ask you this, since Spartan is so bad, why didn't you transfer or go to another school? You even once mentioned that your sister is going to go to Spartan. Why is that? Not even your own sister is taking your always negative advise...
I am not recommending Spartan for anyone. I wouldn't even go anywhere near the carib, if I could do it again. However, if this was my only choice, would I do it again?? You bet I would!!!!!! I never dreamed I would be where I am today. -s&a
Even though Southwest did close down, the school was able to get us rotations in 2 other hospitals in Atlanta. So nothing bad really came out of this situation.

The dept of education in its last meeting in Sept voted again to extend the limited comparability approvals of the St Lucian medical education[this is not Spartan review but they do countries comparability] final decision will be discussed on its meeting in April 2005 pending more documents requested from the government of St Lucia,April will be very important month because the FSMB and the DOE on St Lucia both should be out,I hope everyone taking such survival issues seriously.
Mindprobe! i'm not going to mention on the forum which hospitals it is. The school worked hard to get this for us and not to be selfish but I don't want non Spartan people to find out and try and get rotations. But I am currently a student in ATL and I was at Southwest. So basically, one of the new rotation hospitals is green book for all the cores and the other one is green book for everything except peds and psych and those you can do at the other hospital anyways. Both of these hospitals are in the metro ATL and not that far away from Southwest. But I hope this answers your question. People always have negativity about the school...but this situation made me have a lot of respect for the New mexico administration. They were extremely quick about helping us with the closing of Southwest.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as free 3rd year core rotations, save for family practice. Electives, on the other hand should ALL be free, that includes your entire 4rth year. In fact, you can do a full year at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MI and get the best recommendations on the planet for free.
If Spartan helped get rotations for people after the fall of southwest hospital then that is a good thing. By the way, they did get me rotations, when I was stuck. Although they are reluctant to help, if you tell them, "I need a rotation in the USA and I will not go anywhere else." They will help you. They always need the money... -s&a

I think that we all should be careful with this new program in Atlanta. It only started a couple of weeks ago. There have been situations in Atlanta where doctors started programs on their own, and students had to redo their rotations. Our school did not set up the hospitals for us. The secretary of the program did all of the work. Our administrators just lucked up. Did you notice that we were not notified about Southwest's closing by our administrators? It's really sad that the Spartan staff does not advocate for us, especially since we are paying for tuition in addition to rotations. What exactly are we paying tuition for?

I kept seeing this post from Shock...
Well, that may be true back in his days when foreign medical educations are less regulated. This is really not the case nowadays with affiliation requirements and such. When was the last Spartan student rotated through Mayo clinic for their entire fourth year? That's NO LONGER possible with Mayo nowadays. This is from their website:
Visiting medical students are limited to one four-week rotation throughout Mayo's three locations.
Again, another ill informed misinformation being perpetuated...

Does Spartan require that you set up your own rotations? Does Spartan have an affiliation agreement with any hospital that offers all core rotations as green book? If so, what city?
If not all green at one hospital, how about one city? If so, what city?
Thanks for any help.
