Wow, I've received my last paycheck, my cable is now turned off, and I'm leaving for Saba in one day. Talk about some harsh reality setting in. Any comforting words about no viable cash inflow being filtered into my portfolio for the next 4 years would be nice to hear. I'm a bit freaked out right now. I can't imagine not working at a job. I need someone to bring home the bacon (or as they say in Saba- "I need someone to bring home the goat cheese"). No job, no money, no welfare since we're owned by the Netherlands, wow.. scary.

In anticipation of what you are currently experiencing, I can begin to empathize. I will be in your shoes in just a few mos or so, and reality is already setting in. I would truly enjoy hearing about your first few days (or weeks), time-permitting, of course.

I have been working 70-80 hours per week for the past 10 years, have grown accustomed to having what I want, when I want it, and to throw it all away for the Carib, is, frankly, scary. Even if the reward for doing so is substantial-both personally and professionally-I am anxious yet eager to dive into this new world.

Saba is in the Caribbean but not like other Caribbean islands. Communication ( internet, phone calls) is expenive. I'm on my second day, and I still have not seen any fresh fruits on trees that I can pick to eat. There are tons of goat. One tried to attacked me. I was hiking one of the hills, and the goat skid on a rock that came tumbling down on me.

Thank God I have cable at my appartment or I would lose my sanity. I walk to the dorm so I can converse with other folks. There is literally no one available in my area to talk to. And to make things worst. You cannot get out of the island. A few of us spnt New Years Eve walking arround in search of something to do. There was nothing available. Because all the locals were in church until midnight. A bit of activity started after 12 am. That was it. Happy New Year.

Yes. I suppose desperate times call for desperate measures: I guess with not a lot to do, studying will be all that you can do. It sounds to me that going to Saba (as well as many other Carib med schools) is like joining a monastery:
