Hey there everyone!! Hope everything is good with you guys on the island. I have been back a couple of times since leaving in 4-03 but havent really spent much time hanging around the school --go figure!!

First, I was shocked to hear about the tragedy of Dr. Van Wormer. If anyone can fill me in I would appreciate it. I certainly hope he didnt needlessly suffer in the St. Maarten Medical Center for Meeting your Creator! The school has truly lost its BEST professor EVER!!

Second, how is the BLS and ACLS training center going? I put a lot of hard work into getting it going...is it still up and running well?

I do not frequent this page often, as there really wasnt time during my core rotations and prior to step 2, but I thought I would drop a note real quick. I am somewhat surprised that we do not have more AUC students at KMC in Bakersfield, CA. The positions go unfilled and given to SGU or Ross students! If you are interested in California or doing all of your cores (and even electives) in one place...give it a look. If you can manage to keep MEIO from completely screwing up your rotation, financial aid, etc....it's a great place to do rotations! I finish in March and have done all of my rotations here! I probably won't match here as I am trying for LA closer to home, but it they do take students who rotate here in FP and IM.

Study hard and do well on your boards and you have a good shot...as long as you arent a trouble-maker!! If you have any questions feel free to post them about KMC or clinical in general. I dont have a lot of free time so please make them succinct and I will answer them as soon as I can. It looks like the moderators keep you guys pretty well up to date here, but if I can help belay your fears...well then, all the better. Keep your chin up and study hard.....and somebody please have a Presidente for me!!

Presidente - ICK!

As for Kern, well, Rich is right, there are TONS of people dying to go there, but it seems they are never given the chance... odd how that works out, isn't it? People AT Kern are saying spots are always open, people at MEIO are saying they are NEVER open. Go figure....

Anyways, you could offer me free tuition and I'd never go out there for clinicals. But everyone's different, so more power to ya!

Forgot, about Dr. Van Wormer, there isn't much to tell, really, he had an MI while driving with his wife, and I believe he was probably already in arrest when the ambulance arrived. Probably better for him in the long run, considering the state of EMS affairs in SXM. I know you spent a lot of time with them trying to get them trained, Jonathan, but in my opinion, it didn't stick. They put just as much effort into proper medical care there as they do everything else... which is to say - NONE! I agree AUC lost a great professor, and I am honored to have known him and Alice. :)

I personally observed a man get run down in the street by a car, 1 block from the fire station (which never responded), 3 blocks from the police department (15 minutes to arrive) and about 6 blocks from the ambulance service. They took over 30 minutes to get there!!!! And when they did, they made the guy get up and walk to the ambulance, took absolutely no spinal precautions with him, etc. I was mortified, but didn't intervene, as I knew our help is not welcomed, because it simply highlights their incompetance and their lack of effort. Too bad, really, but it's not surpising the state of mdeical care on the island when the people who are giving said care have so little motivation to do ANYTHING.
