i'm starting at AUC this jan, and i was wondering if most of you all have a local bank account or just stick with your US checking/credit card accounts. i can't decide if i should just use my US accounts or change some money into euros.

any advice would be appreciated. :)

Well, you've heard my opinion on the matter already, we just used our ScotiaBank account for paying our GEBE (electric & water) bills.

Just wanted to drop in and tell you hi and good luck! Tell Jim to enjoy his trip to SXM next week, and we should see him around the 2nd or 3rd week of Jan. :)

I do not think that it is necessary to open a local account. The U.S. dollar is used everywhere. I did open an account with RBTT- which has worked out fine.

Its all good. I opened a local account with Scotiabank. It's free.

i opened an account with scotia bank. real efficient bank although the lines are always long. i deposited my checks there and wired some money home to my checking account to pay bills etc. others like to just fedex their checks back home to family and use their atm cards here. Scotia does give you an atm card which you can use on the island. also, scotia's atm cards can also be used at the bank of america atm's back in the states.

ps. make sure that if you fedex your checks back home and if they are over 10000 dollars, then make sure you fill out a custom's form.

I use Scotia Bank here only because my landlord won't take a US check so I needed to be able to access cash for rent each month and I didn't want to have to make several trips to the atm over several days to be able to pay it. I have had good service and no problems with any of Scotia atm machines on the island.

Yup, that works just dandy for me as well. But personally, the Sports Book is my ATM. My friend is a whiz, he places a bet, we follow, collect and wine and dine.
