Okay, how bad are the bugs on the island, especially in on-campus housing and the classrooms? Roaches? Mosquitos? Spiders? Bees? Is there much of a difference between first, second, and third floors?

The two craizest things i had to deal with was an eight inch millipede, the thing had horns!!!!!

and a huge blue crab climbing the wall next to my door, i have pics of both if you need proof.

As for the mosquitos and Roaches, i dont think that there are any more or bigger ones than what i have back home in the states (take into account that i am from South Louisiana)

Bugs are everywhere on the island. And yes I had a red milliped on my living room floor and had a baby lizard on the kitchen cabinet. And we have to watch out for huge roches in the lecture hall or they may get into your back pack.

But there is no snake for sure, which is nice and kind of mystery. I have not seen a snake for almost year and half.

you have to keep your windows closed all the time to keep them away.

Ken...you have a 'baby wizard on your kitchen cabinet'?

HOLY witches and wizards...Why don't you let young Harry Potter come out and play?!
I would love to learn magic. If I can get into Hogwarts, I would quit medical school in a heartbeat!
"Wingardium Leviosa"!!!

ha ha...just playin' with ya Ken.

Lecture halls at night are VERY interesting. So many LARGE cockroaches come out to play, and it's like a mosquito buffet. Crazy, I hate those late night meetings because I get eaten alive by all manners of bugs, not to mention the occasional big spider decides to come out and give its $.02 about anatomy as well.

I live on the first floor of the dorms. Occasionaly you'll get milipedes in your room, but they're quite easy to dispose of. I've put a ring of raid traps near my door and never had a cockroach, at least a live one make it in. Mostly on the first floor you'll get lots of mosquitos flying in your room, ants, and spiders. The real big spiders can't get into your room, they sit outside in BIIIG webs.

I tried catching a baby lizard with a cup, I ended up cutting off half his head as I slammed the cup down.

Have you ever seen "Star Ship Troopers"? It's kinda like that. Bring a big fly swatter, and a drum of DDT

THE crappiest movie ever made, yet so crappy it's good. Quite honestly though, it does a HUGE disservice to the book. I heard the director didn't even read the book, but only got halfway through (it's actually a small book), and decided it was all about fascism and decided to go with that. Ugh. Someone needs to stop hollywood.

After living on-campus for a semester I haven't had a real problem with bugs. You'll definatly get ants in your apartment, once in a while roaches and little spiders. Some apartments do get more roaches than others. I've used Raid ant and roach spray here and it's worked pretty well. It also works on silverfish that you might get sometimes. I live on the third floor so i might not get as many bugs as people on the first and second floors (i have no idea about the 4th or 5th floors, but it makes sense that the higher up you are the less bugs you get, i hope :? )

As for mosquitos, bring a few bottles of sprays like OFF, they have some here but not the same variety that you find in the states.

If I were a first semester again, I would have a kitty cat with me in my place. The cats are very good at catching bugs and eat them. But I am 5th now as of yesterday so it is too late.

And mosquito coils are very effective to kill them all. 3M brand are sold at a few grocery stores. It is sort of burning and soft smokey but tolerable and they really kill them all. It it is really get bad I would light up one coil to go to bed and sleep in peace.

And ants,,,,there are traps sold at stores and some spray. They works and they are gone for months after a massive does of them in my place...

The bugs have never bothered me. If you go out at night, you have to watch for mosquitos (but it's not any worse than Michigan in the Summer). Inside, it depends on how good your window screens are.
