So I've been rejected from my (michigan) three state MD schools and I know I have the stats (3.5 gpa, 11BS, 11PS, 10V) to get in somewhere in the US but the thought of leaving home, family, friends, girlfriend behind for four years is not as appealing as going to AUC for 18 months.
My question is has anyone else done this? Have you chosen AUC for the convenience of being able to go back home after 18 months then spen 48 months somewhere else (but you'd be going to a US med school and do you regret it?)
P.S. all this rests on the fact that I want to do my rotations at Providence hospital (southfield, MI) :?

no if you can get in a us school go there.....
family---you can always visit----anyways med school goes pretty quick and you wont even have time to worry about not seeing them
gf--well you will probably trade her in once you get your md anyways...i am just joking about that.....the whole gf thing can be done not bad.....
but if you have the chance to get in at a us school go for it...not worth the extra hassel of going caribbean

Actually, it's 20 months on St. Maarten and there is no gurantee that you'll get Providence. You might have better chance at it if your willing to wait around long enough(as of right now, there is ONE start date for Providence and it's in July). Best time to start school is May if you're going for that spot.
We're all a bunch of rejects here so you'll be in the same boat

its 20 months on st maarten and believe it or not, it does fly by. maybe your girlfriend can come and visit or stay with you. i was in a similar situation where i had to keep applying to schools and after a while i got tired of the wait... i just wanted to start. so you have to see if you want to keep trying and wait or go ahead and start... if i had to go back and redo this experience... i would have started 2 years earlier.

Being from Michigan myself let me suggest: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin all are in a decent driving distance from anywhere in Michigan and have decent MD schools. If you really don't want to leave the area for reasons such as family then explore other close options. St. Maarten is more than a car ride away so why do it if the distance makes you uncomfortable.

My advise.....DO NOT DO THAT. AUC does give you the info you need to become a doctor, but point blank, when looking for a residency (if you're intereresting in a competitive one), going to a caribbean school will be one strike against you. Moreover, IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY that you won't get your first choice clinical site so don't base your decision on that. Going to a US school is a lot less stress and aggrivation. Plus there are the downsides of being on an island....not seeing your family (not having the option to drive home for the weekend), you don't have all of the conveniences of home (malls, certain foods, stores...). AUC is a good school if you must come to a caribbean school, but if i had the option I would study in the US any day. (Also try applying to Wayne State in Detroit, they have a decent acceptance rate percentage)

leave the caribbean as your last resort for all reasons already mentioned. also you have to start warming up to the idea that you will have little time for your girlfriend and family while you are in med school. as i've said beofre the students who have a hard emotional time here seem to be the ones who can't make everything else number two while they are in school.
you could start here while you give the state schools one more shot that way you don't waste time, you still have a shot at state schools, and if you make it in you will be ahead of the curve at least first semester.
don't come here expecting to do clinicals in michigan b/c although they give preferrence to residents there there is no guarantee and the july start date makes it rough b/c if you start in may you have 7 months to wait, and if you start in september you only have three to pass step one.
take a look at ross and sgu also. i beleive sgu takes the summer off so that may help with your family situation....

Apply to out of state private medical schools... and you'll pay the same tuition amount as you do for a caribbean school.

If I were you, I'd apply to more US MD schools and go where you get in... I would NOT go to the carribean if I didn't have to... that's silly. You probably have a chance of transferring back to MSU, UofM or WSU after your first year at another school. They do take transfers. If you kick butt first year, with your stats from undergrad, you could easily be accepted as a transfer. Regardless though, to be honest with you.... it all depends on how bad you want to be an MD? If it's not worth being away from your gf and family, you may want to rethink your career choice. You are going into a profession that will require long hours away from your family for many years to come.... part of being a doc is sacrificing the typical family time. In my opinion, a good doctor doesn't leave his work at work everyday.... in other words, it's not just a day job... you need consider whether or not you will be able to commit to that. I don't mean to be harsh, but that's just my feelings on the subject.
Good luck in whatever you choose!

You know, even though the state schools are required to take a certain # of in state students, I think they always think of the bottom line ($$) knowing they can charge bigger bucks to out-of-state students.
The private universites also charge higher tuition and therefore have student with stats that might not be the top %.
YOU NEED TO KNOW that for you - the competition is always highest at your own state school.
ALSO.... no matter where you go to school in the US, (note: that is a US school to a US school - one that is LCME) you can always do away rotations at your home school.
AND - it's always easiest to transfer within the US to get back home, if you must.

it would be very unwise to go offshore if you can get in. I doubt that anyone has done that. Getting a competitive residency is really tough as an IMG, also how do you know that you will get a residency near home?
I say your chances of getting a residency near home is much higher as a US medical graduate.
there is no guarantee whatsoever that u will get to do you rotations at your hospital of choice.
I dont think it is worth the risk. anyone that claims they did this is most probably lying.
