Does anyone have an accurate idea on why doesn't Ross pursue accredidation like the U.S. schools, since most of their students are americans?? Also, is there any hope of a near-future pursuit with the accredidation, since they were just bought by Devry? Devry back in the U.S. is one of those "technical institutes" that mass produce employees for the corporate world. Devry graduates are known to be looked down upon and discriminated against, especially by Intel, b/c of some idiot who destroyed a very expensive piece of machinery years back. But anyway.. I am not sure if being bought by Devry is a curse or blessing. Sure, there would be more money available for expansion, but will it turn Ross into a doctor producing assembly line? I really hope with all the money and lawyers, Devry would get Ross into accredidation approval door.

Basically there is no group that accredits foreign med schools. There is a study group that was formed by the FSMB and WHO that is studying it now which may indeed do that.

"The LCME accredits the nation's 125 medical schools. Ross is accredited by the Dominican Medical Board, and officials have said they would not pursue additional accreditation from LCME."
I got this from:
http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2000/06/26/prsb0626.htm
There was another one where the opponents of Ross having a branch in Wyoming suggested that Ross should get the accredidation first.
Both of these pieces tell me that Ross can pursue accredidation, but chooses not to.. could it be that it's a political issue, or maybe tax?
Or could it be that they'd have to make a lot of changes to meet the criteria which they are not willing to do (at least not yet)??

Remember, from the article, Ross isn't one of our 125 medical schools in the US..it is foreign....LCME oversees domestic schools..their charter doesn't allow for Ross.
Bigger issue is could Ross meet the US standards? Who knows?.....it would require them tightening up their admittance requirements, more supervision of students in the US, etc.
Indeed DeVry graduate degrees are sort of jokes in the US...not mainstream college stuff......but does DeVry have much presence at Ross other than owning it?

I asked Dr. C this when I was in Miami. When Ross tried to open the WY campus, the LCME told the University people they would grant us accreditation with the following conditions 1) They would have to accept mostly Wyoming residents 2) the university can only accept up to 50 students per year. Naturally, RUSM said "No, thanks."

It would be a HUGE task to accredit foreign medical schools. In essense, accreditation measures the inputs to a process in order to provide some assurance on the quality of the output. It is much easier to measure the qualtiy of the output directly -- which the US does via the USMLE exams.
most states are looking for equivalency of education systems.....my guess is that indeed there will either be a california/ny/texas style evaluation or an agency to do it for them.

The answer is simple...the LCME ONLY gives accreditation to medical schools in the U.S. and Canada. www.lcme.org

They would be told no. Ross is for profit.
And they cap student numbers..... federal funding
is involved. .......... Back in the old days 60's maybe 70's. American university of Beirut had a special recognition as AMA approved as well a couple of phillipine schools. However AMA no longer authorizes this so legally they changed to the LCME to effectively control numbers. Just like they keep changing test around to control the numbers or maintain whatever it is they are trying to accomplish..
