I am currently applying to both Ross and SMU. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about which school has a higher USMLE Step 1 pass rate/ better residency positions or anything else that would be helpful in choosing the best school. Also, where are SMU and Ross grads eligible for licensure? Do they have rotations in Michigan? Thanks, Stephanie.

u and only u are responsible for your USMLE score, no school will completely prepare you for USMLE, you have to do alot of work on your own, SMU as I can see, being a first semester, seems like its got a clinical approach in all of its classes, but ask someone at Ross about their experience, because we have quite a few Ross transfers here
plus the island (Dominica) is a piece of s***t, as I heard from my friends
good luck

Steph,
beware of other people advicing you on which school to go to.
I'm ROSS student now but in the process of transfering for my own, personal reasons. People DO become MDs having gone through ROSS and SMU. They are both FOREIGN med schools. I saw someone answering your post who graduated from ROSS, and is now in university based residency program. This person stated that they even would not consider SMU graduate because of some past experiences. I find it hard to believe that any residency program will make their decision about ALL graduates based on any individual encounter. I'm not even sure that it's true at all.
Existing longer than SMU, ROSS has far more chances of producing incompetent physicians. Beware of some falks acting as trolls.
So go with your heart.
If you were to listen to that guy it's either ROSS or you don't make it as an MD. You know well it's a bunch of crap.

I been in this for 24 yrs and went thru 8 licensing boards[I am not Ross grad, transfered out of Ross due to high tuition] and I am very impressed with the leadership of St Mathews[aggressively pursuing all states] but my honest personal advise GO with the oldest well established school, you still have to deal with issues like Indiana licensing [even if you have no interest in IN it will still effects your career],California looking good for St Mathews but Ross already has it,CO is also difficult state ,...you have to make this decision but as an honest advise based on 20+ yrs experience as offshore grad I advise you to try St George or Ross just because they have $$$$$$ to fight for their students, approved everywhere[including IN,CA],and been around since 1978.I think Saba and St Mathews going the right direction.
Personal openion based on personal experiences
good luck

You'll hear different responses to your question about Ross or SMU. I'm a student at SMU and very happy here. SMU hasnt been around as long as Ross has, but I dont think that really matters anymore. SMU is becoming one of the premier Caribbean schools, I would definantly put SMU at the top of your med school rankings. As far as Michigan rotations, they do have 2 Michigan sites that offer some cores. Check SMU's website for the exact locations. Plus you can do your entire fourth year (electives) at any approved Michigan site, with permission of the hospital program and the school.

I never and will never rank offshore schools, just was given my personal openion having to deal with so many state licensing applications and I know what they want and ask,Also I did not realize SMU been around for 26 years and approved in all States[[still awaiting CA I guess and the Indiana list may be an old one.the school website looks good I even know one of the professors,Sorry.
