I am currently a first semester student and I am also from California, like a lot of other students I am worried about St. Matthew's getting California. There have been tons of rumors floating around about what happened in the last site visit but I don't believe them. I just have a request to St. Matthew's please do not spare any expense in trying to do what California wants and to even exceed their requirements. I know I don't need to explain the benefits not only for St. Matthew's reputation but financially for the school, but we have a great opportunity to do what most other Caribbean med schools could not do to get licensure faster than any other school. This would propel St. matthew's close to St. Georges. I have been very pleased by St. Matthew's and how they handled the hurricane situation. We have a rare opportunity that California is doing another site visit this is another opportunity to not only show them that everthing they saw the first time is still there but improvements have been made. I trust in the administration to show Califronia what we all know that St. Matthew's is a great school and def California material.

I also wonder if California students can do anything like writing to their congressmans but that is just a thought we need to unite :?

LaCarthic,
I am also from LA and I know exactly what you are feeling. Its been a trying time to say the least over these last few weeks, but keep your head up, the transition was smoother then expected, and i am sure the histo/embryo situation more then makes up for the anatomy speed and difficulty.

now this is probably the most important thing that i will EVER say to any first semester student - DONT LISTEN TO THE RUMORS THAT YOUR FELLOW FIRST SEMESTERS TELL YOU. in fact, dont listen to them at all. if you have an issue or a problem, why would a fellow first semester have the answer and you not the answer??? instead, ask an upper semester or a faculty member and they will be able to get you the answer fast.

as far as California goes, SMU definitely knows the financial repurcussions that would occur if they receive the California approval ; in my semester of roughly 50 students, as least 10% if not more are from Cali alone ; that number would skyrocket if and when we get approval. the site visit went well ; i was actually in school and on campus and in the anatomy lab on the days of their visiting, and it was not negative at all. The california reps were happy to meet us and seemed both sociable and eager to see our facilities. At no point did i see any negative body language on the visitors.

if you have any more questions regarding California and what exactly is going on, PM me or talk to me when you see me around campus. I have talked to Pat Park several times regarding our status and i would be happy to keep you up to date with whatever knowledge that i have.

as far as writing to someone in the senate it doesnt matter, the licensure dept will make the final decision, regardless of the opinion of the Cali rep (the licensure dept wants to make sure that doctors will perform up to Cali standards coming out of SMU and thats all that they care about)

The administration appreciates your support.

While the sentiment is great, there is no need to write your representatives regarding California approval, as it is handled by the board.

We understand their concern that SMU may not be the same school they inspected, especially with some of the pictures from right after the storm. We will be glad to host them again, and have every confidence that they will see the same, if not improved, qulaity program.
