Hello, I am a student transferring to SMU from AUC and I was wondering if US health insurance (i.e. Blue Shield, Blue Cross, etc) is valid in the Caymans. If not, does the school have a student health insurance policy that I can purchase when on the island? What do most students do for health insurance? Thank you in advance for all of your help.

As long as your policy covers the same or morepoints that the school policy does, you may use your own. If not, all students are enrolled in a policy ($328 a semester). If you have questions, please call Alicia in the Niceville office at 1-800-678-3301.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. By the way, just for the record, I had nothing to do with the links in the above post. They apparently appear automatically whenever those two words are typed together. :?

It's no problem, and the links are automatically done by ValueMD. Example: Why don't you use your FA money to take a Kaplan course. See?

one question for you mehrdad1, If I can ask, what was the main reason you transferred to SMU from AUC? I appreciate your response. Im trying to make my mind b/w SMU and AUC.

My first semester at AUC I did very poorly and failed 3/4's of my classes. I wanted to withdraw from the classes that I was failing, but back then AUC had a rule that you couldn't drop a class after the week of first exams (which is still pretty early in the semester). They changed this rule the very next semester after they saw how many students were negatively affected by it (myself included). Overall, I still love AUC and feel that it is a very good school with a lot to offer. Unfortunately I was in danger of failing one too many classes and decided to officially withdraw from AUC and transfer to SMU as I had heard nothing but good things about it. My ultimate decision was to start off with a clean slate at SMU, rather than stay at AUC and risk failure. Please don't let this scare you away from applying to any medical school. Everyone's experience is different, and I'm sure you will do well irregardless of where you choose to go. Good luck to all of you, and remember that medical school is not a race it's a marathon.

I'm happy that I could help. I'll gladly answer any questions to the best of my ability. However, I suggest that we do it in a new post, since this one is titled "insurance," and I don't want to be bothering others with off topic material. Take care and good luck to all.
